  • This study developed a scale for measuring publicness and examined the differences in perception of publicness according to library usage experience, personal characteristics of local residents, and types of library services. The survey was conducted on 15 local public libraries in 5 districts of Seoul, targeting library users and local residents. As a result, it was found that the publicness of libraries is composed of three factors: participatory responsiveness, procedural fairness, and situational equality, which demonstrate different aspects formed through the interaction between library users and local residents in the local community. The study derived ways to enhance publicness and presented in detail which aspect of publicness needs to be enhanced according to library usage experience and service period, local residents' occupational environment and experience of local activities, and types of library services. The study suggests that when service experiences that enhance publicness are effectively provided, more local residents can benefit from them, and the value of the library's existence can be demonstrated.

  • This paper intends to describe the concepts and historical development of electronic library, to examine some of information technologies such as CD-ROM, electronic books, multimedia and networks, and to analyze cases of electronic library. Electronic library is able to offer many services in digital form, ranging from bibliographic databases on CD-ROM running on standalone computers, to fully networked abstracts and texts, available inside and outside the library. For users, the electronic library is a means of improving the speed of access to library materials, of providing a simple means of the selecting materials amid the glut of information available, and of eliminating the need to visit a library for many information inquires. In summary, electronic library has the potential to give scholars better service than conventional libraries, at a lower cost. However, remember that, today, almost all these benefits are still potential.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze influencing factors for the user satisfaction of information commons(IC) in school libraries. Relevant previous studies inform four candidate factors that could affect the user satisfaction. Based upon these factors and user interviews, a questionnaire are constructed to form 29 items in total. As the main data, 412 samples are collected from the IC users from 3 high schools in Seoul. Analyses lead to these findings: factors affecting the user satisfaction are identified. They are IC facilities, human services, and achievement level of self-directed learning. It seems that, in ICs, users prefer using space and facilities by themselves to accessing contents. This study suggests ways to improve user satisfaction. It would be essential to introduce IC facilities to current and potential users, to install instruments to enhance achievement level of self-directed learning, and to train users through library education programs.

  • In the previous surveys conducted on the users of digital multimedia centers at major public libraries, their facilities, contents, staffs and operating system have been found to be the most significant factors for determining the user's satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to seek practical ways of improving digital information services at public libraries by surveying Hanbat Library Users' satisfaction on these four factors. The statistical analysis of the surveyed data has shown that the general satisfaction with the digital service was relatively good: 4.68 out of the maximum scale of 7, that their satisfaction with the facilities were increased but those with staffs and operating system were decreased, and that 69.7% of the users were not willing to learn how to use contents mainly because they do not trust the staffs' ability to teach. Therefore, it was confirmed that the continuous reeducation of staffs and the expansive recruiting of professionals are essential for improving digital information services.

  • Faceted navigation has brought a lot of changes to traditional library catalog and is one of the resource discovery interfaces in next-gen library catalog. Faceted navigation usually divides too much retrieved results into some relevant facets for user's convenient navigation. The faceted navigation of 9 libraries adopting resource discovery interfaces was analyzed in this article. The terms are much broader or different from the users' terms so that the users can't properly use the facets. It is essential to maintain consistency with using the terms to provide users with faceted navigation service and this study has found how exactly authority work was done in analysis of the author facets. Also, public libraries introducing faceted navigation need to consider including some facets for various users and university libraries need to consider detailed division of resource types.

  • This paper reports the results of the analysis on the access points of two bibliographic databases specialized in children's materials: "A" public library's online catalog and "N" children's novel database. The analysis particularly focused on the access points that lead users to discover their own needs and on the ways users search and navigate. The findings showed that the selected bibliographic systems supported many access points that were taken from the materials as well as from other relevant information sources and that browsing and navigating with hyperlinks supported the users' 'recognition' of information through 'interactivity' between the users and the systems, 'information encountering,' and 'serendipity.' The findings of this paper have implications for librarians and systems designers who want to develop user-friendly bibliographic systems that give access to children's materials.

  • There has been research to understand users' information behaviors using book circulation data of public libraries. In this study, we examined the subject areas of books simultaneously borrowed by users of public libraries and aimed to identify the relationships among the subject areas. To accomplish this, we utilized the Korean Decimal Classification codes of 984,790 loaned books in 2019 to transform the lists of concurrently borrowed books, totaling 22,443,699 records, by the same users on the same day, into vectors using the ITEM2VEC technique. Next, we extracted ten highly related classification codes for each classification code, utilizing a total of 522 classification codes to create a network. We identified 15 communities within this network and examined the characteristics of each community. Among the 15 communities, those consisting of two or more main classes allowed us to identify meaningful thematic associations. This study, grounded in users' book usage behaviors, has suggested the topics of books that could be borrowed together. The findings offer valuable insights for library collection development and placement, recommending related subject materials, and revising classification systems.

  • This study aims to compare the awareness of the social value of public libraries between users and non-users to materialize the abstract concept of social value and, thereby, to present measures that can be applied to the library field. For this purpose, a survey was conducted in person or online for 15 days from May 7, 2023, targeting Paju citizens. Frequency analysis, factor analysis, independent samples t-test, and one-way analysis of variance were conducted on 206 valid response copies using SPSS 25.0. In the results, it is shown that, first, for awareness of the social value of public libraries according to socio-demographic characteristics, there were significant differences depending on age, with in particular, awareness among those in their 10s and 40s being higher than other age groups. For awareness of community development, the awareness of the female group was higher than that of the male group, while, for the awareness according to occupation, it is shown that awareness was highest in the following order: student, others, housewife, self-employed, and office worker. Second, for the awareness of the social value of public libraries, the awareness of the user group was higher than that of the non-user group in all areas. Third, for awareness of the social value of public libraries according to the level of library use, there was no significant difference between groups. In conclusion, it is suggested that measures to encourage non-users to become users, develop new content and services targeting male group and those in their 60s, and 20s, and strengthen community activities are needed to raise awareness of the social value of Paju City public libraries in the future.

  • As a law library representing the Department of Justice, the Supreme Court Library of Korea collects various domestic and foreign legal information and aims to become more publicly accessible. In 2018, after its relocation to Goyang, Korea, the library has initiated check-out services to citizens and is currently developing a plan to provide services in the legal field. In this study, we have assessed the current situation at the Supreme Court Library as well as public libraries in Goyang. Furthermore, we have surveyed future users and legal experts to formulate a proposal for optimal literary composition and spatial composition, as well as library arrangement. Survey participants expected extensive provision of legal information regarding legal professions and the general public. There was a significant difference in opinion between legal experts and users with respect to resources for the public; general citizens desire more materials related to general topics whereas legal experts expect more law-specific resources such as information regarding judicial precedents and court decisions, research articles. Furthermore, 80% of users expressed interest in utilizing the library; therefore, active efforts to improve its facilities will lead to successful operations of the library.
