A Study of the Criteria for Lessons that Build Students' Creativity and Character - Focused on Secondary Mathematics Classes - (창의와 인성 함양을 위한 수업척도 고찰에 관한 연구 - 중등 수학 수업을 중심으로 -)

  • This study focuses on the criteria for lessons that develop secondary students' creativity and character in mathematics classes. Literature used in this study is related to the future direction of education (e.g., Core competencies, Information and Communication Technology, Constructivism education) and intent of the revised mathematics curriculum. Lesson criteria for developing students' creativity and character include educational content associated with the real-world contexts, use of tools and resources, active participation and interaction, problem-solving skills, teachers' attitudes, and the classroom environment. This study suggests ways to implement mathematics lessons that build students' creativity and character.

A Study of LOGO in Secondary School Mathematics Classroom (로고(LOGO) 언어의 중등수학교육 활용방안)

  • The purpose of the study was to suggest a few fundamental ideas to secondary mathematics teachers regarding using LOGO in their classrooms. Even though this software is "classic" in mathematics lessons in the States and western countries, Korean secondary mathematics teachers did not have much opportunities to become familiar with this software and its applications in their classrooms. This article offered a few suggestions with the specific guidelines. Basic commands were also listed for those who are not familiar with this software. Since the current Korean educational curriculum do not allow to use LOGO in regular classrooms as substitute lessons, it is recommended to implement these ideas in extra curriculum lessons or "Math Club" as trial basis.

The Effect of Science Writing Heuristic on Concept Formation of Light in 'Mirrors and Lenses' and Scientific Attitudes

  • We investigated the effect of Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) on elementary students' concept formation and their retention. Also we explored the interaction effect of those with scientific attitudes. We developed mirrors/lenses lessons incorporating SWH. An experimental group of fifth grade students (n=25) had been instructed with SWH lessons for six periods while a control group (n=25) taught according to the normal science lessons based on the Korean national curriculum using teacher's guides published by the Ministry of Education. Results of pre- and post-test of understanding the concept of mirrors and lenses showed a positive impact of SWH on both male and female students. However, the retention effect after post-test revealed that SWH only had an effect on female students' scientific attitudes. SWH, therefore, could be an effective teaching approach especially on concept formation, retention effects by fostering female students' scientific attitudes.

Insight into the Development of Mathematics Teaching: A Comparative Study of Two Videotaped Lessons

  • From the perspective of phenomenongraphy(根据登的象式), two videotaped mathematics lessons were observed, compared and analyzed, and the features of those times were extracted. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of the global structure and the questioning in the lessons etc. showed that in teaching behaviors there were some essential differences reflecting the impact of new beliefs and principles of teaching. Evidences also show that excellent teachers did keep and carry on the good tradition teaching for basic knowledge and basic skills were seen as the most important thing in mathematics teaching in China.

A Study on Effects of AR and VR Assisted Lessons on Immersion in Learning and Academic Stress

  • This study investigated the academic stress and the immersion in learning in relation to AR and VR assisted instructions compared to traditional approaches. To that end, 78 $8^{th}$ graders in T and S city in Gangwondo were assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group received the VR and AR lessons. The academic stress was measured with the pre- and post-test scores, while the immersion in learning was measured with the post-test scores. In brief, AR and VR assisted lessons made statistically significant differences in the academic stress and immersion in learning in comparison to the traditional approaches.

  • We investigated the characteristics of lesson session and the professional development of teachers who conduct good teaching science subject. Seven teachers' were selected the finalists at the elementary school science and teaching competition. The study was based on a semi-structured questionnaire and interviews. To prove validity of the study, the collected data were verified by subject teachers for feedback. The results showed that the teachers believed that their lesson contents and methods were superior to other teachers. To enhance professional development in their lessons, they are only being made through help from colleagues and personal efforts, and a systematic development was involved with necessary situation. As a plan for enhancing an effective quality enhancement of lessons, open classes and conversation between colleagues were proposed. An organization or a group that can motivate teachers and provide systematic support for quality enhancement of lessons by teachers is needed.

The Pacing of Volume Lessons in American Elementary Textbooks Compared to Students' Development in Volume Measurement

  • In the early stage of lesson enactment process, teachers use textbooks and other resources to select tasks and activities. It follows that discrepancies between textbooks and research-recommended pathways for learning may lead to concerns or issues with pacing in the classroom. To explore this idea further, this study examined the alignment between three popular standards-aligned textbooks series and volume learning trajectories. The results indicated that the standards-based textbooks examined may lack attention to important topics in the pacing of volume instruction, and suggest the need to inform both pre-service and in-service teachers about the gap between textbook lessons and volume learning trajectories so that they will be able to reflect students' thinking in volume learning trajectory to their lessons.

Essay on the Lessons Learned from Korean Franchisors Going International

  • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to find the issues associated with international expansion of Korean franchisors going international and suggest lessons of proposition to reduce the failure risk in international expansion of franchise systems. Research design, data, and methodology - This is the exploratory study and structured to review (1) background to motivate the expansion of franchisors towards international market, (2) the status of Korean franchisors going international in recent years, (3) issues, (4) lessons learned from the experiences, and (5) summary. Secondary sources were reviewed to get necessary data and statistics. Results - Master franchising was the most preferred entry mode for Korean franchisors. Franchisors must understand the expenses to be incurred as well as revenues associated with international activities. Brand is the core asset of franchisor as a differentiation strategy. Conclusions - The paper indicates that even if international franchising is the unique business model for franchisors to use in little or least risk compared with other international entry modes, it needs a set of complex capabilities that much differ from those in domestic and franchisors should take a step approach to the international market with the planned and long term perspective.

Case Study on Science Drama in Elementary School (초등학교 과학 연극 수업 사례 연구)

  • Science drama can be an useful tool for understanding the nature of science, Science-Technology-Society relationship by providing indirect experiences to young students. Specific science concept and knowledge can also be learned with high interests. In this study, to explore the usefulness of science drama in elementary science lessons, two scripts of science drama and lesson plans were developed and implemented. Six step model for science drama lessons was also suggested. One was 'Manhattan Project' which dealt with social, ethical responsibility in using science & technology (science argument drama), and the other was 'Mom, My blood type is O' which explained the heredity of blood type (science concept drama). Two teachers were asked to write their journals during preparation and implementation of science drama lessons, and the lessons were observed by the researcher and video taped for analysis. Some students were interviewed just after the lessons by the teacher and all students were asked to write their impressions, change of their thought, what is leant etc. Overall responses of students and teachers on the two science drama lessons were very positive, 'Mom, My blood type is O' got more positive responses, and girls were more positive than boys. Some students anticipated another science drama even suggest topics for it. 'Mom, My blood type is O' was successful in making students (grade 3) understand the knowledge related with heredity of blood type (71% of the students got perfect answer). In 'Manhattan Project' students (grade 5) perceived more diverse location of responsibility after the lesson, but the danger and harmfulness of atomic power was embossed. This implied the need of more careful planning for the relevant learning activities before and after the play of science drama.Two teachers perceived the science drama as a new, useful tool for some subject which is hard to deal with by other teaching method. They were also satisfied with students' high interest and engagement during the science drama lessons but the extra time and effort for the lessons were pointed out as a main difficulties.

The Change of Elementary Science Gifted Students' Perception about Engineers and Engineering Practices through Science and Engineering Integrated (SEI) Lessons (과학공학 융합 수업을 통한 초등 과학 영재 학생들의 공학과 공학자에 대한 인식 변화)

  • This study is to investigate how science and engineering integrated (SEI) lessons affect science-gifted students' perceptions about engineers and engineering practices. Twenty elementary science gifted students participate in this study, and they reflect what engineering practice means such as managing limited time and budget. The SEI lessons with 24 hours class time are used as an intervention. The main data are collected with 'engineer and engineering drawing test', open-ended questions and interviews about the drawing, and focus group interviews about the lessons. The transcribed interview data are analyzed using mixed methodology of quantitative (descriptive and paired t-test) and qualitative methods. The result shows that the SEI lessons have positive impacts on the science-gifted students' perceptions about engineers and engineering practices such as engineering design. After the lessons, the students perceive engineering and engineers in a desired way such as engineering as a social practice that many experts work collaboratively, the interaction between engineering and society, and the importance of ethics and social values in engineering practice.
