  • This paper reports the GEM (Gateway to Educational Materials) project whose goal is to develop an operational framework to provide the K-12 teachers in the world with 'one-stop/any-stop' access to thousands of lesson plans, curriculum units and other Internet-based educational resources. To the IS-element Dublin Core base package, the GEM project added an 8-element, domain-specific GEM package. The GEM project employed the conceptual data modeling approach to designing the GEM database, used the Sybase relational database management system (RDBMS) to construct the backend database for storing the metadata of educational resources, and also employed the active server page (ASP) technology to provide Web interfaces to that database. The consortium members catalog lesson plans and other Internet-based educational resources using a cataloging module program that produces HTML meta tags. A harvest program collects these meta tags across the Internet and outputs an ASCII file that conforms to the standard agreed by the consortium members. A parser program processes this file to enter meta tags automatically into appropriate relational tables in the Sybase database. The conceptual/logical schemas of Dublin Core and GEM profile are presented. The advantages of conceptual modeling approach to manage metadata are discussed. A prototype system that provides access to the GEM metadata is available at http://lis.skku.ac.kr/gem/.

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest qualitative improvement through various student-centered curriculum's teaching experiences focusing on physical education. For this, class diaries, memos, lesson plans, student reviews, and videos for the past four years (2017-2020) were collected and analyzed from four high schools in kyonggi-do, and six students were interviewed. The common features between each student-centered curriculum were to have many students with the purpose of entrance examination and with concern about time conflicts between class and their dinner. In contrast, the differences between each student-centered curriculum were the required level of writing lesson plan, the level of interest and role of a class supervisor, and educational expected effect of students under a given condition. In summary, pre-education experience should be required and class activity support and various evaluation methods should be also needed.

  • This paper describes the effects of Novel Engineering(NE) on improvement of creative problem-solving abilities. We performed two classes for control and experience group. They are all 5th grade students. Core concept of the NE lesson is ecosystem and interaction with 8 hours long. We designed a lesson able to integrate subjects like Korean, Science and Practical Arts. Then we performed pre-and-post t-test on creative problem-solving ability. The experimental results showed that NE lesson has a high effects on 4 sub-elements like self conviction and independence, diffusion thinking, critical thinking and motivational component. The research showed that NE class is a good teaching-learning method to cultivate various competencies for our children. NE is a convergence learning model integrating various problem-solving paradigms ever researched. Thus we expect that NE is a foundation for convergence curriculum model to lead our children to their future and get settled to all schools.

  • The current research was to investigate the effects of discussion activities based on Havruta style on elementary school students' social studies communication skills. For this purpose, we examined a comparative study between 5th grade students and other students of partner schools. As research results, first, online classes using video conference equipment and smart devices will enhance the students' interest and participation in class. Second, the Havruta style helps students not only acquire and internalize knowledge by themselves through the course of reciprocal questions and discussions but also improve presentations and participations. Third, it is necessary not only to draft a new lesson plan and to reconstruct the education process for video and online classes but also to develop the classes with a lesson plan after preparations and discussions with colleague teachers; the process of reflection, such as writing a lesson research journal, has a positive effect to improve the quality of cooperative classes. Fourth, using SNS discussion activities to serve as a complementary activity is good, and two teachers can evaluate each of the students' achievement. It is necessary to have a sufficient number of schools where video and online cooperative learning is possible with video equipment provided. To maximize the effect of video and online classes, various studies and teacher trainings are needed. Education office needs to provide a server that enables students in small and large classes to freely engage in cooperative learning.

  • This dissertation aims to analyze various safety accidents taking place during physical education class according to physical education teacher's value orientation, to identify teacher's value orientation that can minimize safety accidents, and to provide basic materials for safe and smooth class management. For this purpose, data have been collected from 261 physical education teachers at some middle and high schools in G City in Kyung-Ki Province and Busan Metropolitan City. The materials were treated as follows: The variables on demographic characteristics of physical education teachers are determined by t-test ; The analysis of one-way ANOVA and relationship between value orientation and safety accident prevention activities was conducted through Pearson's linear correlation analysis and multiple regression; The analysis of the relationship between value orientation and actual conditions of safety accidents was conducted through logistic regression. First, there is almost no awareness difference of physical education teachers' value orientation according to demographical variables. The value orientation physical education teachers consider to be the most important is, however, mainly 'mastery of disciplinary lesson.' There is a statistically significant difference in safety accident prevention activities according to demographical variables. Teachers' focuses in class contents showed a significant difference according to teaching experience and working area, while the dependency on facility has a significant difference according to teaching experience and school type. Second, there is no correlation between physical education teacher's value orientation and safety accident prevention activities because there is virtually no statistically significant difference between them. It means that safety accident prevention activities are not related with on which teachers place emphasis among mastery of disciplinary lesson, social reconstruction, self-realization, ecological integration and value orientation on learning process. Third, the analysis of safety accident prevention activities according to physical education teachers' value orientation revealed that the lower value orientation in social reconstruction is, the more safety accidents teachers experience. It is also found that crashes among students, ball games and leg injuries are inter-related with social reconstruction in value orientation, over-motivation and unskilled motor function ; athletic sports with value orientation on learning process and safety prevention training ; unskilled motor functions with value orientation in ecological integration and disobedience to teacher's directions ; winter accidents with mastery of disciplinary lesson in value orientation. In conclusion, the research indicates that physical education teacher's value orientation according to demographical variables didn't show any significant difference, while one according to safety accident prevention activities showed significant difference. Besides, physical education teachers' value orientation is not related to safety accident prevention activities, but the relationship between value orientation and actual conditions of safety accidents showed correlations according to each variable. Especially, teachers with lower value orientation in social reconstruction experienced more safety accidents. Therefore, physical education teachers can manage physical education class more safely with more emphasis on value orientation in social reconstruction.

  • Hypertension is prevalent among older adults, and nutrition is important for hypertension management. However, there are few nutrition education materials developed for older adults. The purpose of this study was to develop a booklet for prevention and management of hypertension for older adults. Based on lesson plans, topics for the booklet included introduction to hypertension, hypertension prevention through weight management, nutritional management of hypertension, and lifestyle modifications. After several revisions of the draft were made, illustrations and icons appropriate to the text were designed by a graphic designer using Illustrator 9.0 and Photoshop 6.0. The booklet consisted of four chapters and 40 pages. The first chapter dealt with information on hypertension, risk factors, complications and dietary guidelines. These were mainly explained by illustrations and characters of older adults. The second chapter included assessment of obesity, reducing fat intake and behavioral change strategies. The third chapter focused on practical tips for reducing salt, eating more fiber and calcium, and sample menus. The fourth chapter presented information for quitting smoking and drinking, and stress management. Finally, games, meal planning and quizes, were presented as reinforcement. Based on pilot testing with 10 adults aged 50 and older, minor changes were made in wording, expressions and information. This booklet is characterized by using simple and specific messages, providing tips for dietary and lifestyle changes, and using illustrations and characters of older adults to increase understanding. The revised booklet is self-explanatory and can be used by older adults or in nutrition education for older adults.
