The rare earth oxide wastes consisting of major 8 nuclides Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu and Gd, are generated during the salt waste treatment of PyroGreen process. The final form of the rare earth is generated as the oxide state. In this study, six candidate glasses were developed to evaluate the feasibility for vitrifying the rare earth oxide wastes within the borosilicate glass system. The solubilities of the mixture of the rare earth oxide waste showed less than 25wt% at $1,200^{\circ}C$, less than 30wt% at $1,300^{\circ}C$, respectively. It means that solubility is increased with the temperature increment. The liquidus temperature of the homogeneous glass with 20wt% waste loading was determined as less than $950^{\circ}C$. In more than solubility of rare earth oxides glass, formation of rare earth-oxide-silicate crystal in glass-ceramic occurred as the secondary phase. As their viscosity at melting temperature $1,200{\sim}1,300^{\circ}C$ was less than 100 poise, electrical conductivity was higher than 1 S/cm, 20~25wt% waste loading glasses with good surface homogeneity are judged to have good operability in cold crucible induction melter. Other physicochemical properties of the developed glasses are going to be experimented in the future.
In this study, we have investigated new plasma resistant materials with less usage of rare-earth oxides than $Y_2O_3$ which is currently used in the semiconductor industry. We observed the stability ranges of $(Gd{\cdot}Y)_3Al_5O_{12}$ and $(La{\cdot}Y)Al_{11}O_{18}$ ternary systems, and measured their etch rates under typical fluorine plasma. $(Gd{\cdot}Y)_3Al_5O_{12}$ system showed an extensive solid solution up to 80 mol% gadolinium, but $(La{\cdot}Y)Al_{11}O_{18}$ showed a negligible substitution between rare-earth ions, which can be explained by the differences between the ionic radii. The etch rates depended on the total amount of rare-earth oxides but not on the substitution of the rare-earth ions. When the specimen was examined using XPS after the exposure to fluorine plasma, the strong surface fluorination was observed with a shift of the binding energy to higher energy.
Bi4Ti3O12 (BIT) and its rare earth (Y, Nd, Sm, Gd)-substituted derivatives were synthesized using a sol-gel method to investigate their microstructures, cystal structures and electrical properties depending on the subsituted elemetns. Nd- or Sm-substitution into BIT appeared to be favorable, while Y- or Gd-substitution occurred with a pyrochlore phase. This suggests that a smaller trivalent rare earth ion may not be favorable in the structure of BIT. The rare earth derivatives showed that their particle sizes and shapes were considerably different depending on the kinds of substituted elements. Y-substitution resulted in developing a relatively even particle size and a dense microstructure. In structure, they may be similar to the pseudo-orthorhombic BIT but close to a paraelectric tetragonal phase. Their a (or b) axes were shortened, compared to the one of BIT. Such a distortion may result a decrease in the tilting of TiO6. BIT and the derivatives showed that their dielectric constants and losses were 40~120 and less than 0.03, respectively in the frequency range of 1~10 MHz. The dielectric loss of Y-substituted derivative was the lowest one and changed a little to frequency. Curie points were observed in all the derivatives like BIT to suggest that they would be ferroelectric. The temperature stability of the delectric properties of the derivatives below the Curie points were relatively better than the one of BIT.

We studied effects by Re$_2$O$_3$(R=Dy, Gd, Ho) addition on the properties of Mn-Zn ferrite. The doping concentration range from 0.05 wt% to 0.25 wt%. All samples were prepared by standard fabrication of ceramics. With increasing the rare earth oxides, specific density and initial permeability increased on the whole. But, the tendencies such as upper result had the measured value on limitation and characteristics saturated or decreased properties after that. In case of excessive addition of additive beyond some level, initial permeability properties of ferrite have gone down in spite of anomalous grain. With increasing the content of additive, both the real and imaginary component of complex permeability and the magnetic loss (tan$\delta$) increased. Because the increased rate of real component had higher than imaginary component, magnetic loss increased none the less for increasing the real component related with magnetic permeability. But, the magnetic loss of ferrite doped with the rare earth oxides was lower than that of Mn-Zn ferrite at any rate. The small amount of present rare earth oxides in Mn-Zn ferrite composition led to enhancement of resistivity in bulk, and more so in the grain boundary. It was seem to be due to the formation of mutual reaction such as between iron ions and rare earth element ions.

Rare earth (RE) - transition metal based high energy density magnets are of immense significance in various engineering applications. $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ magnets possess the highest energy product and are widely used in whole industries. Simultaneously, composite alloys that are cheap, cost effective and strong commercially available have drawn great attention, because rare-earth metals are costly, less abundant and strategic shortage. We designed rare-earth free alloys and fabrication process and developed novel route to prepare $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ powders by wet process employing spray drying and reduction-diffusion (R-D) without the use of high purity metals as raw material. MnAl-base permanent magnetic powders are potentially important material for rare-earth free magnets. We have prepared the nano-sized MnAl powders by plasma arc discharge and micron-sized MnAl powders by gas atomization. They showed good magnetic property, compared with that from conventional processes. $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ powders with high coercivity of more than 10 kOe were successfully synthesized by adjusting R-D step, followed by precise washing system. It is considered that this process can be applied for the recycling of RE-elements extracted from ewaste including motors.

For the recovering rare earths in the spent nickel-metal hydride batteries, 10 M NaOH is added to the solution leached with sulfuric acid. The rare earth powders were precipitated at rate of 98 % at the condition of pH 2.0 or less. The recovered rare earth complex precipitate increased the leaching rate to nitric acid by heat treatment at $800^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. Subsequently secondary precipitation was performed by adding oxalic acid to the solution in which the rare earth complex precipitate was dissolved. The re-precipitated rare earth powders were converted into oxide form through heat treatment at $800^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours with purity of 99.5 %.

Demand for high fuel efficiency and smart features of the vehicles, research has been intensified. Hence, research and development on electric power steering (EPS) system to replace the existing hydraulic steering system has been actively conducted. Permanent magnet motors are widely used in automotive applications due to their high power density and high efficiency. However, increasing price and limited production of rare-earth permanent magnets has recently prompted the auto parts makers to substitute permanent magnet motors by non- or less rare earth magnet motors. Switched reluctance motors SRMs), known as typical non-rare earth motors have simple structure, low manufacturing cost, and high reliability. This paper discusses design, modeling, simulation, and experimental verification of a prototype SRM drive for electric power steering system.
Magnetic materials has been applied to various fields due to their energy convertible properties between electrical and mechanical energy. Particularly, permanent magnets have been currently attracted much attention because they produce external magnetic field without any electrical current. For high efficiency, a demand for permanent magnets containing rare earth elements has been continuously increased, which abruptly raises the price and causes the supply difficulty of rare earth materials. Therefore, the development of permanent magnets with less or without rare earth elements become a urgent issue. In this report, the current trend and major issues on high efficiency permanent magnets, particularly exchange-coupling magnets, are discussed.
A systematic study of Knoevenagel reaction and Nazarov cyclization was made on variety of less reactive carbonyl compounds such as ${\beta}$-ketoesters, 1,3-diketones and cyclic active methylene compounds using $Yb(OTf)_3$ as the catalyst. Recycling study confirms reusability of the catalyst without much loss of activity.
