  • This study examined the readability of 4 different kinds of patient education handouts about computer tomography tests from 5 different university-affiliated hospitals in Korea. Readability was evaluated in terms of syntax. length of sentence, usage of unfamiliar words. foreign words. Chinese words, abbreviation, and technical jargon. This study found that all of the handouts were very difficult to read. An excessive use of complex and long sentences was found. Unfamiliar words, rarely used in everyday life, were recklessly used. Most of the unfamiliar words were Chinese words and can be exchanged with Korean language. Excessive medical terminologies were used without any explanations. Based on the study results, guidelines to make the handouts easier and more accessible to patients and their family were recommended.

  • Objectives : The paper seeks to provide a study on Bianque's Pulse Diagnosis in the contexts of Huangdi Neijing's Maijing and Nanjing. Methods : The paper provides a comparison of sentences regarding Bianque's Pulse Diagnosis discovered in Neijing, Maijing, and Nanjing. Results & Conclusions: 1. Bianque's Pulse Diagnosis was given birth through stages in accoradnce with the development of Pyobonjin, Maeggujin, Gyeongmaeghyjin, and Meridian Theory. 2. It seems that Neijing filled in Sambuguhujin and In-yeongbuyangmaegjin because they were not discovered in Canggong's Records of Diagnosis. 3. Bianque's Pulse Diagnosis diagnosed death using Osaegjin. Underneath each sentence within each biography regarding Meridian, there existed Pulse dead Hou. 4. Bianque's Pulse Diagnosis quantified the operation and length of pulse in time. The concept of small net was added which led to the establishment of Fifty circulations, Yeongwi theory, Meridians circulation, and chongu's boundary.

  • The purpose of this paper is to design Speech Database for Korean pronunciation education. For this purpose, I investigated types of speech errors of Korean-learners, made texts for recording, which involves all types of speech errors, and showed how to gather speech data and how to tag their informations. It's natural that speech data should include Korean-learners' speech and Korean people's speech, because Speech DB that I try to develop is for teaching Korean pronunciation to foreigners. So this DB should have informations about speakers and phonetic informations, which are about phonetic value of segments and intonation of sentences. The intonation of sentence varies with the type of sentence, the structure of prosodic units, the length of a prosodic unit and so on. For this reason, Speech DB must involve tags about these informations.

  • The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate and compare the vowel lengths of English diphthongs and low vowels among native-English-speaking Americans and Korean college exchange students. To do this eight words and sixteen sentences were uttered and recorded by nine subjects, five Korean subjects and four American subjects. Results showed that the vowel lengths of English low vowels between American subjects and Korean subjects were different, which may lead to foreign accent of Korean speakers. Comparing the average length of English low vowels of Korean subjects with those of American subjects, we can see that American subjects tend to pronounce the English low vowels longer than Korean subjects do. In the pronunciation of diphthongs /eI/ and /ou/, Korean subjects pronounced longer than American subjects did. However, in the pronunciation of diphthongs /au/, /aI/, and /ɔI/, American subjects pronounced longer than Korean subjects did.

  • In this paper, phrase boundaries in sentence are predicted and a phrase break information is applied to an HMM-based Korean Text-to-Speech synthesis system. Synthesis with phrase break information increases a naturalness of the synthetic speech and an understanding of sentences. To predict these phrase boundaries, context-dependent information like forward/backward POS(Part-of-Speech) of eojeol, a position of eojeol in a sentence, length of eojeol, and presence or absence of punctuation marks are used. The experimental results show that the naturalness of synthetic speech with phrase break information increases.

  • Of the 2,593 children picture books published in Korea between 2001 and 2003, 46% were Korean in origin, while 53.9% were Korean translations of books originally in English, Japanese, French, or German. This study compared 45 of the translations with the originals. Of these, 49.2% had contents not included in the originals, and 31.1 % had omitted contents. More over, 7.6% of the Korean versions were different in punctuation codes and signs, and 6.7% were different from originals in length of sentences. Most of the books were on general or global issues rather than culture-bound. However, among the English books, there were more than 20 cases different from Korean culture in person's names, external appearance, food, and/or clothing.

  • The purposes of the present study were to give the new direction of teaching English based on the 7th English curriculum, and to show some useful insights on English teaching in the 21st century. The 7th English curriculum was developed in two parts: as a required subject and as an elective subject. As a required subject, the English curriculum applies to the third grade of elementary school through to the first grade of high school. The elective subject of the English curriculum applies to the second and third grades of high school. In the 7th curriculum reform, a proficiency-based language program will be applied in the form of intensive and supplementary courses at the same levels irrespective of differences based on students' abilities, schools and regions. Linguistic functions, communicative functions, subject matters are included in the content area in language organization. Limiting the length of sentences is applied at elementary school only and is not applied at higher levels.

  • Document summarization is an important task in various areas where the goal is to select a few the most descriptive sentences from a given document as a succinct summary. Even without training data of human labeled summaries, there has been several interesting existing work in the literature that yields reasonable performance. In this paper, within the same unsupervised learning setup, we propose a more principled learning framework for the document summarization task. Specifically we formulate an optimization problem that expresses the requirements of both faithful preservation of the document contents and the summary length constraint. We circumvent the difficult integer programming originating from binary sentence selection via continuous relaxation and the low entropy penalization. We also suggest an efficient convex-concave optimization solver algorithm that guarantees to improve the original objective at every iteration. For several document datasets, we demonstrate that the proposed learning algorithm significantly outperforms the existing approaches.

  • In this paper, we present a phrase break prediction method using CRF(Conditional Random Fields), which has good performance at classification problems. The phrase break prediction problem was mapped into a classification problem in our research. We trained the CRF using the various linguistic features which was extracted from POS(Part Of Speech) tag, lexicon, length of word, and location of word in the sentences. Combined linguistic features were used in the experiments, and we could collect some linguistic features which generate good performance in the phrase break prediction. From the results of experiments, we can see that the proposed method shows improved performance on previous methods. Additionally, because the linguistic features are independent of each other in our research, the proposed method has higher flexibility than other methods.

  • The recent growing popularity of statistical methods in machine translation requires much more large parallel corpora. A Korean-English parallel corpus, however, is not yet enoughly available, little research on this subject is being conducted. In this paper we present a hybrid method of aligning sentences for Korean-English parallel corpora. We use bilingual news wire web pages, reading comprehension materials for English learners, computer-related technical documents and help files of localized software for building a Korean-English parallel corpus. Our hybrid method combines sentence-length based and word-correspondence based methods. We show the results of experimentation and evaluate them. Alignment results from using a full translation model are very encouraging, especially when we apply alignment results to an SMT system: 0.66% for BLEU score and 9.94% for NIST score improvement compared to the previous method.
