In this work, a new penalty formulation is proposed for the analysis of Mindlin-Reissner plates by using the element-free Galerkin method. A penalized weak form for the Mindlin-Reissner Plates is constructed through the exterior penalty method to enforce the essential boundary conditions of rotations as well as transverse displacements. In the numerical examples, some typical problems of Mindlin-Reissner plates are analyzed, and parametric studies on the order of integration and the size of influence domain are also carried out. The effect of the types of background cells on the accuracy of numerical solutions is observed and a proper type of background cell for obtaining optimal accuracy is suggested. Further, optimal order of integration and basis order of Moving Least Squares approximation are suggested to efficiently handle the irregularly distributed nodes through the triangular type of background cells. From the numerical tests, it is identified that unlike the finite element method, the proposed element-free Galerkin method with penalty technique gives highly accurate solution without shear locking in dealing with Mindlin-Reissner plates.
Fractional Step Methods(FSM) are popular in simulation of unsteady incompressible flow. In this study, we demonstrate that FSM, combined with a Volume-Of-Fluid method, can be further applied to simulation of multiphase flow. The interface between the fluids is constructed by the effective least squares volume-of-fluid interface reconstruction algorithm and advected by the velocity using the operator split advection algorithm. To verify our numerical methodology, our results are compared with other authors' numerical and experimental results for the benchmark problems, revealing excellent agreement. The present FSM sheds light on accurate simulation of turbulent multiphase flow which is found in many engineering applications.
It has been established that a crack has an important effect on the dynamic behavior of a structure. This effect depends mainly on the location and depth of the crack. Toidentifythelocation and depth of a crack in a structure, a method is presented in this paper which uses neuro-fuzzy-evolutionary technique, that is, Adaptive-Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) solved via hybrid learning algorithm (the back-propagation gradient descent and the least-squares method) and Continuous Evolutionary Algorithms (CEAs) solving sir ale objective optimization problems with a continuous function and continuous search space efficiently are unified. With this ANFIS and CEAs, it is possible to formulate the inverse problem. ANFIS is used to obtain the input(the location and depth of a crack) - output(the structural Eigenfrequencies) relation of the structural system. CEAs are used to identify the crack location and depth by minimizing the difference from the measured frequencies. We have tried this new idea on beam structures and the results are promising.
A Meshfree is a method used to establish algebraic equations of system for the whole problem domain without the use of a predefined mesh for the domain discretization. A point interpolation method is based on combining radial and polynomial basis functions. Involvement of radial basis functions overcomes possible singularity. Furthermore, the interpolation function passes through all scattered points in an influence domain and thus shape functions are of delta function property. This makes the implementation of essential boundary conditions much easier than the meshfree methods based on the moving least-squares approximation. This study aims to investigate a stress analysis of structural element between a meshfree method and the finite element method. Examples on cantilever type plate and stress concentration problems show that the accuracy and convergence rate of the meshfree methods are high.
Most civil engineering structures, such as highway bridges, towers, power plants and offshore structures suffer structural damages over their service lives caused by adverse loading such as heavy transportation loads, machine vibrations, earthquakes, wind and wave forces. Especially, if excessive load would be acted on the structure, general or partial stiffness should be degraded suddenly and service lives should be shortened eventually For realistic damage assessment of these civil structures, System Identification method using only structure dynamic response data with unknown input excitation is required and thus becoming more challenging problem. In this paper, an improved Iterative Least Squares method is proposed, which seems to be very efficient and robust method, because only the dynamic response data such as acceleration, velocity and displacement is used without input data, and no information on the modal properties is required. The efficiency and robustness of the proposed method is proved by numerical problems and real single span beam model test.
This paper addresses photometric distortion problems of a compact 3D scanning sensor which is composed of a micro-size and inexpensive camera-projector system. Recently, many micro-size cameras and projectors are available. However, erroneous 3D scanning results may arise due to the poor and nonlinear photometric properties of the sensors. This paper solves two inherent photometric distortions of the sensors. First, the response functions of both the camera and projector are derived from the least squares solutions of passive and active calibration, respectively. Second, vignetting correction of the vision camera is done by using a conventional method, however the projector vignetting is corrected by using the planar homography between the image planes of the projector and camera, respectively. Experimental results show that the proposed technique enhances the linear properties of the phase patterns that are generated by the sensor.
In power systems operation, state estimation takes an important role in security control. For the state estimation problem, conventional optimization algorithm, such as weighted least squares (WLS) method, has been widely used. But these algorithms have disadvantages of converging local optimal solution. In these days, a modern heuristic optimization methods such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), are introducing to overcome the problems of classical optimization. In this paper, we suggested parallel particle swarm optimization (PPSO) to search an optimal solution of state estimation in power systems. To show the usefulness of the proposed method over the conventional PSO, proposed method is applied on the IEEE-57 bus system.

The optimal parameters for the fluid-structure interaction analysis using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) for fluids and finite elements for structures, respectively, are explored, and the effectiveness of the simulations with those parameters is validated by solving several open surface fluid problems. For the optimization of the Equation of State (EOS) and the simulation parameters such as the time step, initial particle spacing, and smoothing length factor, a dam-break problem and deflection of an elastic plate is selected, and the least squares analysis is performed on the simulation results. With the optimal values of the pivotal parameters, the accuracy of the simulation is validated by calculating the exerted force on a moving solid column in the open surface fluid. Overall, the SPH-FEM coupled simulation is very effective to calculate the fluid-structure interaction. However, the relevant parameters should be carefully selected to obtain accurate results.
Three time-discontinuous Galerkin quadrature element methods (TDGQEMs) are developed for structural dynamic problems. The weak-form time-discontinuous Galerkin (TDG) statements, which are capable of capturing possible displacement and/or velocity discontinuities, are employed to formulate the three types of quadrature elements, i.e., single-field, single-field/least-squares and two-field. Gauss-Lobatto quadrature rule and the differential quadrature analog are used to turn the weak-form TDG statements into a system of algebraic equations. The stability, accuracy and numerical dissipation and dispersion properties of the formulated elements are examined. It is found that all the elements are unconditionally stable, the order of accuracy is equal to two times the element order minus one or two times the element order, and the high-order elements possess desired high numerical dissipation in the high-frequency domain and low numerical dissipation and dispersion in the low-frequency domain. Three fundamental numerical examples are investigated to demonstrate the effectiveness and high accuracy of the elements, as compared with the commonly used time integration schemes.
problem of pedestrian localization using mobile nodes containing impulse radio ultra wideband (IR-UWB) is considered. IEEE 802.15.4a-based IR-UWB can achieve accurate ranging. However, the coverage is as short as 30 m, owing to the restricted transmit power. This factor may cause a poor geometric relationship among the mobile nodes and anchor nodes in certain environments. To localize a group of pedestrians accurately, an enhanced cooperative localization method is proposed. We describe a sequential algorithm and define problems that may occur in the implementation of the algorithm. To solve these problems, a batch algorithm is proposed. The batch algorithm can be carried out after performing the sequential algorithm to linearize the nonlinear range equation. When a sequential algorithm cannot be performed due to a poor geometric relationship among nodes, a batch algorithm can be carried out directly. Herein, Monte Carlo simulations are presented to illustrate the proposed method and verify its performance.
