The paper presents a study regarding rubber compressibility behavior. The objective is to analyze the effect of compression degree of rubber on its mechanical properties and propose a new methodology based on reverse engineering to predict compressibility degree based on uniaxial stretching test and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). In general, rubbers are considered to be almost incompressible and Poisson's ratio is close to 0.5. Since this property is intimately related to the rubber packing density, little changes in Poisson's ratio can lead to significant changes regarding mechanical behavior. The deviatory hyperelastic constants were obtained through experimental data fitting by least squares method for the most relevant constitutive models implemented in commercial software Abaqus, such as: Neo-Hooke, Mooney-Rivlin, Ogden, Yeoh and Arruda-Boyce, whereas the hydrostatic part was determined through an optimization algorithm implemented in the Abaqus environment by Python scripting. The simulation results presented great influence of the Poisson's ratio in the rubber specimen mechanical behavior mainly for high strain levels. A conventional pure volumetric compression test was also carried out in order to compare the results obtained by the proposed methodology.

Abrupt change of cross-section in mechanical parts is one of significant causes of structural fracture. In this paper, a hybrid method is employed to analyze the stress distribution of a discontinuous plate. The plate with an inclined crack is utilized in our experiment and the stress field in the vicinity of crack tip is calculated through isochromatic fringe order of given points. This calculation can be made handy through least-squares method integrated with complex power series representation(Laurent series) implemented on a computer program for high-speed processing. In order to accurately compare calculated results with experimental ones, both of actual and regenerated photoelastic fringe patterns are doubled and sharpened by digital image processing. The experiment results show that regenerated patterns obtained by hybrid method are quite comparable to actual patterns.
Flexural stiffness of bridge spans has become even more important parameter since Eurocode 1 introduced for railway bridges the serviceability limit state of resonance. For simply supported bridge spans it relies, in general, on accurate assessment of span moment of inertia that governs span flexural stiffness. The paper presents three methods of estimation of the equivalent moment of inertia for such spans: experimental, analytical and numerical. Test loading of the twin truss bridge spans and test results are presented. Recorded displacements and the method of least squares are used to find an "experimental" moment of inertia. Then it is computed according to the analytical method that accounts for joint action of truss girders and composite deck as well as limited span shear stiffness provided by diagonal bracing. Finally a 3D model of finite element method is created to assess the moment of inertia. Discussion of results is given. The comparative analysis proves efficiency of the analytical method.

Model updating is a very active research field, in which significant efforts has been invested in recent years. Model updating methodologies are invariably successful when used on noise-free simulated data, but tend to be unpredictable when presented with real experimental data that are-unavoidably-corrupted with uncorrelated noise content. In this paper, Reanalysis using frequency response functions for correlating and updating dynamic systems is presented. A transformation matrix is obtained from the relationship between the complex and the normal frequency response functions of a structure. The transformation matrix is employed to calculate the modified damping matrix of the system. The modified mass and stiffness matrices are identified from the normal frequency response functions by using the least squares method. Full scale pseudo dynamic pier test is employed to illustrate the applicability of the proposed method. The result indicate that the damping matrix of correlated finite element model can be identified accurately by the proposed method. In addition, the robustness of the new approach uniformly distributed measurement noise is also addressed.

The MLS(Moving Least Squares) Difference Method is a numerical scheme that combines the MLS method of Meshfree method and Taylor expansion involving not numerical quadrature or mesh structure but only nodes. This paper presents an dynamic algorithm of MLS difference method for solving transient solid mechanics problems. The developed algorithm performs time integration by using Newmark method and directly discretizes strong forms. It is very convenient to increase the order of Taylor polynomial because derivative approximations are obtained by the Taylor series expanded by MLS method without real differentiation. The accuracy and efficiency of the dynamic algorithm are verified through numerical experiments. Numerical results converge very well to the closed-form solutions and show less oscillation and periodic error than FEM(Finite Element Method).

Fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) composites have drawn increasing attentions worldwide for decades due to its outstanding properties. Stress concentration factor (SCF) as an essential parameter in materials science are critically considered in structure design and application, strength assessment and failure prediction. However, investigation of stress concentration in FRP composites has been rarely reported so far. In this study, three resource-conserving analyses (Isotropic analysis, Orthotropic analysis and Finite element analysis) were introduced to plot the $K_T^A-d/W$ curve for E-glass/epoxy composite plate with the geometrical defect of circular hole placed centrally. The plates were loaded to uniaxial direction for simplification. Finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out via ACP (ANSYS composite prepost module). Based on the least squares method, a simple expression of fitting equation could be given based on the simulated results of a set of discrete points. Finally, all three achievable solutions were presented graphically for explicit comparison. In addition, the investigation into customized efficient SCFs has also been carried out for further reference.
Waveform inversion requires extracting a reliable low frequency content of seismic data for estimating of the low wave number velocity model. The low frequency content of the seismic data is usually discarded or neglected because of the band-limited response of the source and the receivers. In this study, however small the spectral of the low frequency seismic data is, we assume that it is possible to extract a reliable phase information of the low frequency from the seismic data and use it in waveform inversion. To this end, we exploit the frequency domain finite element modeling and source-receiver reciprocity to calculate the $Frech\`{e}t$ derivative of the phase of the seismic data with respect to the earth model parameter such as velocity, and then apply a damped least squares method to invert the phase of the seismic data. Through numerical example, we will attempt to demonstrate the feasibility of our method in estimating the correct velocity model for prestack depth migration.

An experimental study is presented for the effect of number of terms of a pewee series type stress function on stress analysis around a hole in tensile loaded plate. The hybrid method coupling photoelastsic data inputs and complex variable formulations involving conformal mappings and analytical continuity is used to calculate tangential stress on the boundary of the hole in uniaxially loaded, finite width tensile plate. In order to measure isochromatic data accurately, actual photoelastic fringe patterns are two times multiplied and sharpened by digital image processing. For qualitative comparison, actual fringes are compared with calculated ones. For quantitative comparison, percentage errors and standard deviations with respect to percentage errors are caculated for all measured points by changing the number of terms of stress function. The experimental results indicate that stress concentration factors analyzed by the hybrid method are accurate within three percent compared with ones obtained by theoretical and finite element analysis.
This paper describes 2.5D induced polarization (IP) modeling and inversion algorithms using complex resistivity. The complex resistivity method has merits for acquiring more valuable information about hydraulic parameters and pore fluid than the conventional IP methods. The IP modeling and inversion algorithms are developed by allowing complex arithmetic in existing DC modeling and inversion algorithms. The IP modeling and inversion algorithms use a 2.5D DC finite-element algorithm and a damped least-squares method with smoothness constraints, respectively. The accuracy of the IP modeling algorithm is verified by comparing its responses of two synthetic models with two different approaches: linear filtering for a three-layer model and an integral equation method for a 3D model. Results from these methods are well matched to each other. The inversion algorithm is validated by a synthetic example which has two anomalous bodies, one is more conductive but non-polarizable than the background, and the other is polarizable but has the same resistivity as the background. From the inverted section, we can cleary identify each anomalous body with different locations. Furthermore, in order to verify its efficiency to the real filed example, we apply the inversion algorithm to another three-layer model which includes phase anomaly in the second layer.
