  • This article is devoted to “forgotten” and rarely used technique of matrix analysis, introduced in 60-70th and enhanced by authors. We will study the matrix trace operator and it’s differentiability. This idea generalizes the notion of scalar derivative for matrix computations. The list of the most common derivatives is given at the end of the article. Additionally we point out a close connection of this technique with a least square problem in it’s classical and generalized case.

  • In this paper, a new design technique which uses weighted least-sqare approach for the solution of the pole assignment problem is represented. This technique maybe used to assign some closed loop poles to places which reduce the large system input and output variance due to near pole-zero condition. The least-square approach is also applied to the design of servo self-tuning controller with integrator.

  • In this paper, a new power spectral estimation technique is presented. At first, by transforming the original data with the Karhunen-Loeve Transform(KLT), we can reduce the amount of the redundant information. Next, by modeling the transformed data by means of the autoregressive(AR) model and then applying the least-squares parameter estimation algorithm to this model, even more accurate spectrum estimates can be obtained. The KLT is the optimum transform for signal representation with respect to the mean-square error criterion. And the least-squares method is used to overcome the inherent shortcomings of popular burg algorithm.

  • A single channel adaptive noise canceling (ANC) technique with a recursive time delay estimator (RTDE) is presented for removing effects of additive noise on the speech signal. While the conventional method makes a reference signal for the adaptive filter using the pitch estimated on a frame basis from the input speech, the proposed method makes the reference signal using the delay estimated recursively on a sample-by-sample basis. As the RTDEs, the recursion formulae of autocorrelation function (ACF) and average magnitude difference function (AMDF) are derived. The normalized least mean square (NLMS) and recursive least square (RLS) algorithms are applied for adaptation of filter coefficients. Experimental results with noisy speech demonstrate that the proposed method improves the perceived speech quality as well as the signal-to-noise ratio and cepstral distance when compared with the conventional method.

  • The element-free Galerkin (EFG) method is one of meshless methods, which is an efficient method of modeling problems of fluid or solid mechanics with complex boundary shapes and large changes in boundary conditions. This paper discusses the theory of the EFG method and its applications to modeling of groundwater flow. In the EFG method, shape functions are constructed based on the moving least square (MLS) approximation, which requires only set of nodes. The EFG method can eliminate time-consuming mesh generation procedure with irregular shaped boundaries because it does not require any elements. The coupled EFG-FEM technique was introduced to treat Dirichlet boundary conditions. A computer code EFGG was developed and tested for the problems of steady-state and transient groundwater flow in homogeneous or heterogeneous aquifers. The accuracy of solutions by the EFG method was similar to that by the FEM. The EFG method has the advantages in convenient node generation and flexible boundary condition implementation.

  • This paper presents a technique, which identifies both process noise covariance and sensor noise covariance by using innovation correlation test. A correlation test, which checks whether the square root Kalman filter is workingly optimal or not, is given. The system is stochastic autoregressive moving-average model with auxiliary white noise Input. The linear quadratic Gaussian control is used for minimizing stochastic cost function. This paper indentifies Q, R, and estimates parametric matrics $A(q^{-1}),B(q^{-1}),C(q^{-1})$ by means of extended recursive least squares and model reference control. And The proposed technique has been validated in simulation results on the fourth order system.

  • This paper proposes a parameter estimation technique of a power transformer. Based on the combined equation, it estimates separately the primary and secondary leakage inductances using the least square method from the instantaneous voltages and currents in the steady state. The performance of the proposed technique was investigated by varying the cut-off frequency of the filter and the number of samples per cycle. The estimated values are obtained based on the average value for 41 cycles.

  • This paper proposes a novel approach to determine symmetrical components of power system by applying method of least squares in time domain. For the modern power system stability, clearance of faults on high voltage transmission lines in zero response time is crucial and important. Symmetrical components have a great attention since last century. They have been found an effective tool for the analysis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults in power system. Moreover, magnitude of symmetrical components are also used as a caution about faults in system. With rapid changes in technology, Microprocessor assumed to be fastest machine of the modern era. Hence microprocessor based techniques were developed and implemented for last few decades. The proposed technique apply least square method in the computation of symmetrical components which is suitable as an application in microprocessor based monitoring and controlling power system in order to avoid cascading failures. Simulation of proposed model is carried out in MATLAB/SIMULINK and all results exploit the validity of model.

  • In this study, an online seed potato sorting system using a visible and near infrared (40 1100 nm) transmittance spectral technique and statistical model was evaluated for the nondestructive determination of infected and sound seed potatoes. Seed potatoes that had been artificially infected with Pectobacterium atrosepticum, which is known to cause a soil borne disease infection, were prepared for the experiments. After acquiring transmittance spectra from sound and infected seed potatoes, a determination algorithm for detecting infected seed potatoes was developed using the partial least square discriminant analysis method. The coefficient of determination($R^2_p$) of the prediction model was 0.943, and the classification accuracy was above 99% (n = 80) for discriminating diseased seed potatoes from sound ones. This online sorting system has good potential for developing a technique to detect agricultural products that are infected and contaminated by pathogens.

  • It is possible to count and perform quench correction on two ${\beta}$ -label samples so long as the maximum ${\beta}$-energies are sufficiently different. However, when 4he conventional technique is applied to the radioassay of a mixture of more than three nuclides, the reliability of the activities determined is considerably reduced, resulting from the large overlapping of liquid scintillation pulse height distributions of each nuclide. A technique that allows the activities of multiple ${\beta}$-labeled samples to be radioassayed was proposed by using the least square method. The technique was applied to mixture samples of $^3H,\;^{14}C,\;^{36}Cl$, and $^{90}Sr$. The analytical values were in good agreement with the reference values within 7% relative error.
