  • This study aims at expressing the correlation of 'creativity' and 'emotional intelligence' in cartoon expression learning through literary research and correlation analysis. Analyses were made on each sub-factor for the self emotional intelligence evaluation and the creativity evaluation made by experts through cartoon expressions by elementary school students, who are the learners. Studies on preceding research showed that creativity and emotional intelligence had a correlation and that it is common preception that higher creativity is equivalent to higher emotional intelligence. However, results of correlation analysis in this study showed that while there is a relation between creativity evaluation and emotional intelligence in cartoon expression learning, not all factors were correlated. Furthermore, the results of emotional evaluation of the upper and lower group learners did not show similar results in the creativity evaluation. Through this study, it can be said that for emotional intelligence and creativity factors, finding the appropriate emotional intelligence development method would be the way to enhance creativity. Therefore, in order to develop creativity through cartoon expression learning, systematic research should be performed for extracting the relative emotional intelligence factors.

  • The ability to develop curriculums is a crucial factor in evaluating the expertise of a teacher who teaches culture & art education. Establishing a one-year plan for classes is an effort to create a well-designed curriculum for the year and also to foresee the big picture of classes in the corresponding year. A curriculum should not be composed of merely educational content or a series of knowledge and skills. It should be well-designed, based on principles of a coherent plan. This study examines organizational principles on which common curriculums are based on and looks at how a curriculum can be designed, especially for cartoon & animation classes, as part of Culture & Art education, and which factors should be considered in planning. In the process of forming such a curriculum, these steps should be followed: considering educational standards for cartoon animation classes; determining the learning experience, organizing the learning experience; and, lastly, evaluating the level of learning. In addition, effective teaching strategies that reflect the characteristics of a class on cartoon animation should be formulated. This study suggests actual examples of an effective annual curriculum for cartoon animation classes based on all the factors presented above.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of using the concept cartoons about middle school students' science attitude in the lessons on water cycle unit. For the purpose, they were developed to the learning program with concept cartoon and the instrument for the science attitude which has four categories; attitudes about science, attitudes about science subject, learning motives for science subject, and scientific attitudes. The research method was designed to quasi-experimental design. The concept cartoon was provided to the experimental group during nine lessons. Before and after the lessons in all two groups, the pre-post tests with the instrument were performed. The results from twice t-tests were shown that the domain of learning motives for science subject was only improved. From these, it were indicated that the concept cartoon was not effective all areas in science attitude, therefore the use in science lessons need to be restricted within narrow purpose.

  • Nowadays, Korean webtoons are leading the global digital comic market. Webtoons are being serviced in various languages around the world, and dramas or movies produced with Webtoons' IP (Intellectual Property Rights) have become a big hit, and more and more webtoons are being visualized. However, with the success of these webtoons, the working environment of webtoon creators is emerging as an important issue. According to the 2021 Cartoon User Survey, webtoon creators spend 10.5 hours a day on creative activities on average. Creators have to draw large amount of pictures every week, and competition among webtoons is getting fiercer, and the amount of paintings that creators have to draw per episode is increasing. Therefore, this study proposes to generate webtoon background images using deep learning algorithms and use them for webtoon production. The main character in webtoon is an area that needs much of the originality of the creator, but the background picture is relatively repetitive and does not require originality, so it can be useful for webtoon production if it can create a background picture similar to the creator's drawing style. Background generation uses CycleGAN, which shows good performance in image-to-image translation, and CartoonGAN, which is specialized in the Cartoon style image generation. This deep learning-based image generation is expected to shorten the working hours of creators in an excessive work environment and contribute to the convergence of webtoons and technologies.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to develop and examine the effects of a prenatal program on environmental health behavior using cartoon comics among Korean pregnant women. Methods: This study used a non-equivalent control group pre-test/post-test design. The program used cartoon comics to explore environmental health behaviors during pregnancy. The program consisted of the following four components: environmental toxicants during pregnancy, avoiding particulate matter during pregnancy, environmental toxicants during baby care, and making a healthy environment for children. In total, 35 pregnant women participated in the study: 18 in the experimental group and 17 in the control group. Data collection and program adaptation were conducted between November 3, 2020 and January 19, 2021. The effect of the prenatal education program was evaluated by t-test and repeated measures ANOVA. Results: Learning experience (t = - 2.35, p = .025), feasibility (t = - 2.46, p = .019), satisfaction (t = - 2.23, p = .032) were higher in the experimental group than in the control group in the first post-test. Feasibility (t = - 2.40, p = .022) was higher in the experimental group than in the control group in the second post-test. Repeated-measures ANOVA showed significant interactions between time and group in environmental susceptibility (F = 9.31, p < .001), self-efficacy (F = 3.60, p = .033), and community behavior (F = 5.41, p = .007). Conclusion: This study demonstrates the need for a prenatal education program to promote environmental health perceptions and behavior during pregnancy. We suggest a prenatal class adopting the creative cartoon comics to promote the maternal environmental health behaviors.
