  • This paper discusses a method of determining the optimal design of a block. A horizontal layout of blocks is assumed in which transfer points are located at a side of the block. Each block has several transfer points (TPs) each of which is assigned to a group of adjacent bays and located at the center of the assigned group. The goal is to find the optimal size of a block and the optimal number of TPs while minimizing the total cost consisting of the fixed and operational cost of yard cranes (YCs), the operational cost of internal trucks, and the installation cost of TPs. Constraints on the maximum expected system time of trucks are imposed for the optimization. Formulas for estimating handling operation cycle times of a YC are derived analytically. Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate optimal block designs for a given set of data.

  • Almost all injection molds have multi-cavity runner system for mass production, which are designed with geometrically balanced runner system in order to accomplish filling balance between cavity to cavity during processing. However, even though geometrically balanced runner is used, filling imbalance has been observed. Filling imbalance could be decreased by modifying processing conditions such as injections rate, mold temperature, injection pressure, melt temperature that are related to shear, viscosity. In this study, a series of experiment was conducted to investigate filling imbalance variation when modifying runner layout and polymer and to determine which processing condition influences as the primary cause of filling imbalance in geometrically balanced runner system. The filling imbalance was decreased up to result range of $3{\leq}DFI{\leq}8(%)$ by using a new runner system for balanced filling.

  • With three kinds of agricultural products such as perilla leaves, this research is focussed on how to keep a freshness of agricultural products during long time transport by sea. In case of export fresh agricultural products by sea, research on products loading method onto the pallet is very important factor for keeping effective cold air circulation inside the freezing marine container. Details are as follows: Clear examination of palletization for cold air ventilation inside the container. Optimization of package dimension for best loading efficiency onto the standard pallet. Best layout of palletized products inside the container. Research for the change of circumstance and product quality inside the pack.

  • In structural analysis using FEM or BEM, pre_ and post_processor is necessary pre_ and post_processor and analyzer use same structural model. But many other tasks related to structural design, such as optimization, design of layout, etc, do not share that model in spite of their resemblance of requiring data. So, a pre_ and post_ processor was developed using a relational database managing system. Developed system uses the DBMS as a data storage and interacts with it using SQL interface. In this way, many other tasks that uses same structural data can be developed.

  • This paper considers a topological optimization of a network design with mean packet delay and node connectivity constraints. The objective is to find the topological layout of links, at minimal cost. This Problem is known to be NP-hard. To efficiently solve the problem, a scatter search algorithm is proposed. An illustrative example is used to explain and test the proposal approach. Experimental results show evidence that the proposal approach performs more efficiently for finding a good solution or near optimal solution in comparison with a genetic approach.

  • In order to reduce the cost of product and save the processing time, optimal nesting of two-dimensional part is an important application in number of industries like shipbuilding and garment making. There have been many studies on finding the optimal solution of two-dimensional nesting. The problem of two-dimensional nesting has a non-deterministic characteristic and there have been various attempts to solve the problem by reducing the size of problem rather than solving the problem as a whole. Heuristic method and linearlization are often used to find an optimal solution of the problem. In this paper, theoretical and practical nesting algorithm for rectangular, circular and irregular shape of two-dimensional parts is proposed. Both No-Fit-Polygon and Minkowski-Sum are used for solving the overlapping problem of two parts and the dynamic programming technique is used for reducing the number search spae in order to find an optimal solution. Also, nesting designer's expertise is complied into the proposed algorithm to supplement the heuristic method.

  • We have developed an optimization algorithm based formulation for performing efficient time driven simultaneous place and route for FPGAs. Field programmable gate array(FPGAs) provide of drastically reducing the turn-around time for digital ICs, with a relatively small degradation in performance. For a variety of application specific integrated circuit application, where time-to-market is most critical and the performance requirement do not mandate a custom or semicustom approach, FPGAs are an increasingly popular alternative. This has prompted a substantial amount of specialized synthesis and layout research focused on maximizing density, minimizing delay, and minimizing design time.

  • Substructures position is considered as design parameter to obtain optimal structural changes to raise its dynamic characteristics. In conventional SDM (structural dynamics modification) method, the layout of modifying substructures position is first fixed and at that condition the structural optimization is performed by using the substructures size and/or material property as design parameters. But in this paper as a design variable substructures global translational and rotational position is treated. (omitted)

  • This paper considers the workforce assignment problem to minimize both the deviations of workloads assigned to workers and to maximize the total preference between each worker and each machine. Because of the high expense of technology education and the difficulties of firing employees, there is no part time workers in semiconductor industry. Therefore, multi-skilled workers are trained for performing various operations in several machines. The bicriteria workforce assignment problem in this paper is not easy to obtain the optimal solution considering the aisle structure and it is belong to NP-class. The proposed heuristic algorithms are developed based on the combination of spacefilling curve technique, simulated annealing technique and graph theory focusing on the multiple-row machine layout. Examples are presented for the proposed algorithms how to find a good solution.
