Microbial Removal Using Layered Double Hydroxides and Iron (Hydr)oxides Immobilized on Granular Media

  • The objective of this study was to investigate microbial removal using layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and iron (hydr)oxides (IHs) immobilized onto granular media. Column experiments were performed using calcium alginate beads (CA beads), LDHs entrapped in CA beads (LDH beads), quartz sand (QS), iron hydroxide-coated sand (IHCS) and hematite-coated sand (HCS). Microbial breakthrough curves were obtained by monitoring the effluent, with the percentage of microbial removal and collector efficiency then quantified from these curves. The results showed that the LDH beads were ineffective for the removal of the negatively-charged microbes (27.7% at 1 mM solution), even though the positively-charged LDHs were contained on the beads. The above could be related to the immobilization method, where LDH powders were immobilized inside CA beads with nano-sized pores (about 10 nm); therefore, micro-sized microbes (E. coli = 1.21 ${\mu}m$) could not diffuse through the pores to come into contact with the LDHs in the beads, but adhere only to the exterior surface of the beads via polymeric interaction. IHCS was the most effective in the microbial removal (86.0% at 1 mM solution), which could be attributed to the iron hydroxide coated onto the exterior surface of QS had a positive surface charge and, therefore, effectively attracted the negatively-charged microbes via electrostatic interactions. Meanwhile, HCS was far less effective (35.6% at 1 mM solution) than IHCS because the hematite coated onto the external surface of QS is a crystallized iron oxide with a negative surface charge. This study has helped to improve our knowledge on the potential application of functional granular media for microbial removal.

Heating & Cooling Energy Performance Analysis of an Office Building according to SHGC level of the Double & Triple Glazing with Low-e Coating (이중 및 삼중 로이창호의 일사획득에 따른 사무소건물의 냉난방에너지 성능분석)

  • An SHGC(Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) is a determinant of total flux of solar radiation coming indoor and a critical factor in evaluating heating and cooling load. U-value represents heat loss while SHGC denominates heat gain. Recently, windows with high solar gain, mid solar gain or low solar gain are being produced with the development of Low-E coating technology. This study evaluated changes in energy consumption for heating and cooling according to changes in SHGC when using double-layered Low-E glass and triple layered Low-E glass in relation to double layered clear glass as base glass. An Office was chosen for the evaluation. For deriving optical properties of each window, WINDOW 5 by LBNL, an U.S. based company. and the results were analyzed to evaluate performance of heat and cooling energy on anannual basis using ESP-r, an energy interpretation program. Compared to the energy consumption of the double layered clear glass, the double layered Low-E glass with high solar gain consumed $69.5kWh/m^2,yr$, 9% more than the double layered clear glass in cooling energy. The one with mid solar gain consumed $63.1kWh/m^2,yr$, 1% less than the base glass while the one with low solar gain consumed $57.6kWh/m^2,yr$, 10% less than the base glass. When it comes to tripled layered glass, the ones with high solar showed 2% of increase respectively while the one with mid solar gain and low solar gain resulted 5% and 11% in decrease in energy consumption due to low acquisition of solar radiation. With respect to cooling energy. it was found that the lower the SHGC. the less energy consumption becomes.

  • An analysis is made for the relative effectiveness in detecting a subsurface thin layer by four electromagnetic depth sounding systems; horizontal coplanar loops, perpendicular loops, vertical coplanar loops and vertical coaxial loops. The moduli and phases of mutual coupling ratios over a three-layered earth for the four systems are evaluated rapidly by the related convolution technique. Root mean square differences between the responses from the three-layered and the homogeneous earths are used to compare the relative effectiveness of the systems quantitatively. Comparing the all systems, it is found that the perpendicular loop system appears to be the most superior to the other systems.

  • We apply the nonperturbative parquet approximation method, which was previously used to study the effect of thermal fluctuations in two-dimensional vortex systems, to vortices in a layered superconductor. We set up the parquet equations for the Lawrence-Doniach model and present two different numerical methods to solve them. The results for a superconductor consisting of two and four layers are also discussed in connection with an observed first order transition line in the vortex liquid regime.

  • This paper addresses the problem of designing a neural network based controller for a discrete-time nonlinear dynamical system. Using two multi-layered neural networks we first design an indirect controller the weights of which are updated by the informations obtained from system identification. The weight update is executed by parameter optimization method under Lagrangian formulation. For the nonlinear dynamical system, we define several cost functions and by computer simulations analyze the control performances of them and the effects of penalty-weighting values.

  • The photorefractive (PR) effect in liquid crystals sandwiched between photoconductive polymer layers was first studied by Ono et al. They reported that the PR effect vanished at steady state If there were not insulating layers because no charge trapping occurred in the photoconductive poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) layers. However we observed a significant PR effect in the polymer layered liquid crystal (PLLC) system where a liquid crystal layer doped with fullerene is sandwiched between two photoconductive PVK layers.   • To solve the rule explosion problem in multi input fuzzy logic system, a method of converting a given fuzzy system to 2 layered hierarchical fuzzy system is presented where the collection of the THEN-parts of the fuzzy rules of given fuzzy system is considered as vectors of fuzzy rule. At the 1 st layer, linearly independent fuzzy rule vectors generated from the given fuzzy logic system are used and, at the 2nd layer, linear combinations of these independent fuzzy rule vectors are used for fuzzy logic units at each layer. The resultant 2 layered hierarchical fuzzy system has not only equivalent approximation capability, but less number of fuzzy rules compared with the conventional fuzzy logic system.

  • Wireless communication is one of most active areas in modern communication researches, QoS (Quality of Service) assurance is very important for wireless communication systems design, especially for applications such as streaming video etc., which requires strict QoS assurance. The modern wireless networks multi-layer protocol stack structure results in QoS metrics layered and acting in cascade and QoS metrics vertical mapping between protocol layers. Based on virtual buffer between protocol layers and queuing technology, a unified layered QoS mapping framework is proposed in this paper, in which we first propose virtual queue concept, give a novelty united neighboring protocol layers QoS metric mapping framework, and analysis method based on dicerete-time Markov chain, and numerical results show that our proposed framework represents a significant improvement over previous model.

In this paper, the steapest descent algorithm is presented to learn the fuzzy rule vectors and related coefficients for the equivalent 2 layered hierarchical structure. By simulation of learning of ball and beam control system, the feasibility of proposed learning scheme is shown.

IBC-Based Entity Authentication Protocols for Federated Cloud Systems

  • Cloud computing changes the service models of information systems and accelerates the pace of technological innovation of consumer electronics. However, it also brings new security issues. As one of the important foundations of various cloud security solutions, entity authentication is attracting increasing interest of many researchers. This article proposes a layered security architecture to provide a trust transmission mechanism among cloud systems maintained by different organizations. Based on the security architecture, four protocols are proposed to implement mutual authentication, data sharing and secure data transmission in federated cloud systems. The protocols not only can ensure the confidentiality of the data transferred, but also resist man-in-the-middle attacks and masquerading attacks. Additionally, the security properties of the four protocols have been proved by S-pi calculus formal verification. Finally, the performance of the protocols is investigated in a lab environment and the feasibility of the security architecture has been verified under a hybrid cloud system.
