Signals produced from the brain had been considered as a noise that is caused by the stochastic process until 1980. The recent non-linear dynamic theory researches, however, reported that these signals are meaningful and deterministic chaos signals in which they show how the brain deals with various information Since this report a wide range of researches has been carried out and still in progress. Thus, by using the correlational dimension, one of the non-linear analytical methods, the characteristics of the brain signals can be analyzed. In this thesis, the scent of lavender, which stimulates the olfactory sense, is introduced to measure EEG with the International 10-20 electrode system on 16 channels, and to analyze the interrelationship between the original signals before the stimulation and the changed signals after the stimulation. Finally, the effect of the scent stimulation to the brain is analyzed. The purpose of this thesis is to apply these analyzed results to the computerized mapping of the brain signals and possible ways of specifying the source of the brain signals through various medical applications.
In this study, nano-sized poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) particles containing lavender oil as a core material were prepared by using emulsification-diffusion method. Effects of experimental parameters on the characteristics and the release behavior were examined with a field emission- scanning electron microscope, an electrophoretic light scattering spectrophotometer, a visible spectrophotometer and a high performance liquid chromatography The resulting aromatic particles could be prepared in nano-sized globular shapes with the mean particle size of 224 nm by controlling the experimental conditions. From the evaluation of release properties of aromatic PVAc nanoparticles with or without PVA coating, it was found that the aromatic particles coated with PVA show more sustaining and stable release behaviors. Our research on aromatic PVAc nanoparticles could be applied for durable fragrant finishing for textiles, leather products and so on.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of heat therapy combined with aromatherapy on pain, flexibility, sleep, and depression in elderly women with osteoarthritis. Methods: This study was designed as a nonequivalent control group quasi-experimental study based upon data acquired through a pre-post test. The experimental group (n=21) was treated using an aroma-permeated hot compress applied to the knee. The cotton towel was heated in a microwave to $45^{\circ}C$, and 2~3 drops of lavender were applied on it. The towel was wrapped with plastic bag to prevent aroma leakage and retain heat. The treatment was applied the towel for 20 minutes, three times a day for 3 weeks. The control group (n=24) was not given any treatment. Data were collected using a VAS(100mm) for pain, questionnaire for sleep and depression, and a goniometer for knee flexibility. The data were analyzed with ${\chi}^2$-test and t-test using SPSS/Win18.0. Results: There were significant differences in knee pain (p=.001) and flexibility (p<.001), subjective quality of sleep (p=.020) and depression (p=.003) between the groups. Conclusion: Heat therapy combined with aromatherapy may be an effective nursing intervention and self-care technique to ameliorate pain and depression and to improve flexibility and sleep in elderly suffering from osteoarthritis.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of aroma hand massage with hand massage without aroma on well-being of hospice patients. Methods: The design of this study is a quasi-experimental design. Data collection was conducted from May to December, 2012. Sixteen subjects were participated in the experimental group (aroma hand massage) and thirteen were paticipated in the control group (hand massage without aroma). The essential oil for aroma therapy was composed with 1% of Lavender and Bergamot. The aroma hand massage for the experimental group and hand massage for the control group were provided at 9 pm once a day for five days in a row. Subjects' characteristics and well-being were measured. To test the effect of aroma therapy a t-test was used with SPSS WIN 18.0. Results: There was no difference on well-being between aroma hand massage only group and hand massage group (t=1.90, p=.068). Conclusion: To develop aroma therapy to improve well-being for hospice patients, does not show that hand massage with aroma oil is superior them hand massage only for hospice patients. we recommend further studies to consider patients' preferences to aroma essential oil, aroma concentration and the time to provide aroma therapy need to be assessed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of aromatherapy on headache, anxiety, and serum cortisol level in middle-aged women with recurrent headaches. Methods: Nineteen patients in the intervention group and 21 in the control group participated in the exercise. They were randomly selected volunteers whose average headache score over 6 months with above 4 points on the visual analogue scale (VAS). The experimental group received aromatherapy for 5 days; inhalation (3 times per day) and an application on the neck and both shoulders (one time per day). Prior and post treatment scores in headache, anxiety, and measurement of serum cortisol in experimental group were measured. Then, these were compared with the control group. The headache score was measured by VAS; anxiety score was measured by State Trait Anxiety Inventory; serum cortisol was measured by Radio-Immune-Assay method. Results: Decrease in headache, anxiety, and serum cortisol level in the experimental group was greater than those in the control group. Conclusion: It confirmed aromatherapy is effective in reducing headache, anxiety, and serum cortisol level.
Purpose: This study was an experimental study to compare the inhalation effects of aroma essential oil on the quality of sleep (QOS) for shift nurses after working nights. Methods: The participants were 60 healthy adults who didn't have any disease. As an experimental treatment, the participants in the experimental group were asked to inhale essential oil for 3 minutes at a distance of approximately 10 cm from their nose and then they were asked to sleep with the aroma stone beside their head (within a 30 cm distance). QOS were measured four times on Pretest, Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3 after they slept. To measure QOS, Perceived QOS (Numeric Rating Scale), the Verran & Synder-Halpern (VSH) Sleep Scale were used, and number of awakenings (NoA) was measured by Actigraph. Results: There were no significant differences in the homogeneity tests for general characteristics and dependent variables prior to the experiments, except for VSH of subjective sleep quality. Also, there was no significant interaction between group and time. The VSH of the experimental group was higher than the control group (F=6.39, p=.002). The NoA between the experimental group and the control group was significantly different after experimental treatment 3rd day (F=13.35, p=.001). Conclusion: The findings show that the inhalation of aroma essential oil had effects to increase the quality of sleep. Therefore, the inhalation of aroma essential oil could be applied to general nursing interventions to improve the quality of sleep.
Purpose: The purpose of study was to examine effects of aromatherapy on stress, sleep, nausea and vomiting of women after laparoscopic hysterectomy. Methods: The participants were 60 women who had laparoscopic hysterectomy: experiment group for aromatherapy (n=30) and control group for routine care (n=30). The experimental group received inhalation aromatherapy for 5 minutes, twice; the first was done right after the operation, the second was at 9 pm before sleep on the same day-while the control group had no inhalation. Data were collected from July to September, 2012 at G hospital. Results: The degree of psychological stress was not significantly different between two groups (t=-1.96, p=.054). Yet, there were significant differences between two groups for degree of physiological stress (t=-3.20, p=.002), the level of cortisol (t=-2.01, p=.049), the score of sleep status (t=2.47, p=.016), the score of sleep satisfaction (t=2.43, p=.018), and the score for nausea and vomiting (t=-2.58, p=.012). Conclusion: Inhalation aromatherapy using the mixed oil of lavender, mandarin, and marjoram was effective in decreasing the level of physiological stress, cortisol, and the score for nausea and vomiting, and also allowed the participants to have a better sleep. Therefore, inhalation aromatherapy could be effective in improving the quality of life of these women during recovery.
This research applied Aromatherapy Foot Massage on Community elders and examined its effects on their chronic pain, sleep. Species of Laccaria (Hydnangiaceae, Agaricales, and Basidiomycota) are well-known ectomycorrhizal symbionts of a broad range of hosts. Laccaria species are characterized by brown, orange, or purple colored basidiocarps, and globose or oblong, echinulate and multinucleate basidiospores. While some Laccaria species are easily identified at the species level using only the morphological characteristics, others are hard to distinguish at the species level due to small differences in morphology. Heretofore, ten Laccaria species have been reported in Korea. While studying the fungal diversity in the National Parks of Korea, two new Laccaria species were discovered. Species identification was done based on molecular analyses (ITS, 28S rDNA, rpb2, and tef1), then were confirmed by their corresponding morphologies. The two newly discovered Laccaria species are proposed here as Laccaria macrobasidia and Laccaria griseolilacina. The unique morphological characters of L. macrobasidia that distinguish it from its closely related species are orange-brown colored basidiocarp, long basidia and the absence of cheilocystidia. L. griseolilacina is characterized by a light grayish lavender-colored pileus and the absence of cheilocystidia. Two new species are described and illustrated in the present paper.

The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of aroma hand massage and hand massage on sleep disturbance and depression in hospitalized elderly patients. The study was performed using a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The data was collected by using questionnaires and the measured values from 1 June to 31 August, 2006. The subjects who were admitted to the B Medical Center Hospital in Busan. A total of 40 subjects were selected : 20 in the experimental group and 20 in the control group. The aroma hand massage was administered to the experimental group, and hand massage was given to the control group. The experimental group were applied the aroma hand massage executed by methods such as effleurage, circling, pressing, etc. to both hands using a solution diluting six drops of lavender oil, and bergamot oil, 3% in jojoba oil 20 cc. In the experimental group, aroma hand massage was given for 10 minutes, three times a week, during 2 weeks. The control group receiving the hand massage was given the massage for 10 minutes every two days for 2 weeks. The result of the study are as follows : 1) The first hypothesis : "The Experimental group would have a higher degree of sleep score than the control group" was supported(F=31.798, p=p<0.001). 2) The second hypothesis : "The Experimental group would have a lower degree of depression score than the control group" was supported(F=21.743, p<0.001). Aroma hand massage is an effective nursing intervention for decreased sleep disturbance and depression. Therefore, aroma hand massage by nursing intervention is strongly recommended for improving psychological and physiological functions in hospitalized elderly patients.
