The lengths of fibers and vessel elements, vessel diameters, and ray spacings of tension and opposite woods in Quercus mongolica Fischer and their radial variations were examined. Crystallinity indices and crystallites orientations of tension, opposite and lateral woods were also investigated. The lengths of fibers and vessel elements, and ray spacings of tension wood were longer and denser than those of opposite wood, respectively. In the latewood, the vessels of tension wood had a little larger diameters than those of opposite wood. whereas the vessel diameters of earlywood were similar in both woods. With the exception of vessel diameters of earlywood, there were differences between tension and opposite woods in all anatomical characteristics examined. In the radial variation pattern, the fiber lengths of both woods increased markedly to about 15th annual ring and thereafter remained virtually constant. The vessel element lengths of earlywood in tension wood increased to certain annual ring and thereafter were stabilized, but opposite wood had a relatively constant trend from pith to bark. Those of late wood in both woods increased to certain annual ring and thereafter showed constant patterns. Vessel diameters appeared to show similar trend in both woods. Ray spacings decreased to about 15 annual ring and thereafter were stabilized in both woods. In the fine structures, tension wood had higher crystallinity index and better crystallites orientation than opposite and lateral woods.
Muna teakwood, especially from old stands, has been popular as raw material for timber industries in Indonesia for the past ten decades. Due to the scarcity of this wood, superior-grown seedlings of Muna teakwood have been developed and widely planted. Since there is no information on its characteristics, therefore, the aim of this research was to investigate wood characteristics of the 8-year-old superior-grown teak from Muna Island to ensure their proper utilization as raw material for wooden furniture. Wood discs and boards from basal area of three different trees were used as the samples. Macroscopic and microscopic anatomical characteristics were observed following the IAWA's list, while their physical-mechanical properties were measured following British Standard 373-57. Results showed that anatomical characteristics of this wood sample are similar to regular teakwood, but its heartwood portion is higher. Differences among trees are found in regards to wood texture, growth ring width, as well as early and latewood portion. The green moisture content was lower than that of fast-growing teak of a similar age. The wood is more stable than the old teakwood, but its specific gravity is lower. In general, mechanical properties of this wood were higher than those of the regular fast-growing teakwood, but lower than the old one. Based on its specific gravity, this superior Muna teakwood was categorized as a Strength Class of III. The wood is suitable enough for wooden furniture manufacturing.
Anatomical and physical characteristics of seven cultivars of chestnut wood (Castanea crenata Sieb. et Zucc.), Tanzawa, Ibuki, Mansung, Arima, Ginyose, Tsukuba, and Riheiguri, were investigated to obtain some valuable information for their possibilities to be used for high quality furnitures and woodcrafts. Solitary pore and figured-porous or ring-porous wood types were observed in wide growth rings, and ring-porous in narrow growth rings. Procumbent type was prevalent in ray cells although upright and square types were scarcely existed. Uniseriate, biseriate, and multiseriate rays were observed in tangential section. Uniseriate ray was abundant near the pith, and biseriate and multiseriate rays were frequently existed near the bark. The occurrence rate of biseriate and multiseriate rays was significantly high in Tanzawa, Ibuki, Mansung and Tsukuba, but was somewhat low in Arima, Ginyose and Riheiguri. The inner region showed larger vessel diameter, more vessel number, fewer ray number and higher ray height than the outer region. Growth-ring width in inner region was larger than that in outer region. Growth-rings in inner region of Mansung and Arima were wide while that of Ibuki was narrow. Outer region in all cultivars showed higher latewood percentage than inner region. Especially, Mansung and Tsukuba showed significantly high latewood percentage in their outer region. Green moisture content and density of heartwood were higher than those of sapwood. Tsukuba and Riheiguri had higher green moisture content, and Ibuki and Riheiguri had higher green density than the other chestnut cultivars.
The physical, mechanical and chemical properties of old and new Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) were analyzed. The old woods were from dismantled timbers of Bonjungsa temple. The crystallized resin in the latewood was observed by microscopic analysis. Also, reduction of specific gravity, occurrence of microscopic cleavage of tracheid was observed in the old wood. The angle of microscopic cleavage of tracheid is estimated with the same angle of micro-fibril angle of 52 layer. The bending, compression and shear strength of old world were decreased about 35-27% than those of new wood. Dynamic modulus of elasticity measured by ultrasonic nondestructive test has the tendency of reducing by the time elapse of the wood usage. Therefore, deterioration of wood could be measured by reduction of specific gravity and dynamic MOE. The static MOE and mechanical properties of old wood could be predictable by measuring dynamic MOE in the longitudinal direction. Extractives of the old wood in 1-% NaOH solution are larger quantity than new wood. Therefore the decay of the wood could be evaluated by analyzing the chemical compound, especially 1-% NaOH solution. The results of this research could be used for understanding and prediction of the changing properties with elapsing time of wood.
Anatomical characteristics of black and white charcoal of Quercus variabilis and Quercus mongolica manufactured by a Korean traditional kiln were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. In both charcoal, the earlywood vessels shrank in tangential direction, whereas the other cells didn't change. However, in the case of latewood vessels, black charcoal did not show tangential direction shrinkage, but white charcoal did. The wood fiber were changed severly in shape due to the excessive shrinkage. Tyloses in early wood vessel were still shown unchanged shape in both charcoals. Cell wall of ray parenchyma was observed and their shapes were severly distorted. Voids between ray parenchyma were observed in white charcoal, which maybe due to high temperature in white charcoal. Moreover, lumen diameters in the uniseriate ray and multiseriate ray were decreased at the high charring temperature. These results showed that the low charcoal yield of the white charcoal compared to the black charcoal was caused by decrease of cell dimensions as well as loss of wood components associated with the carbonization temperature.
This study was performed to investigate the variation of tracheid length, ray spacing per mm and ray height of major coniferous woods (Picea jezoensis, Abies sachaliensis, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus sylvestris and larix gmelini)grown at Sivelian forest of USSR. The results of the study are as follows: 1. The averaged mean values of tracheid length are respectively $3550{\mu}$ on Pinus koraiensis, $3440{\mu}$ on Abies sachaliensis and Larix gmelini, $2900{\mu}$ on Picea jezoensis, and generally this values of Sivelian coniferous wood are more longer than Korean samewood. 2. The tracheid length on sapwood is more larger than heartwood and this values on latewood are also larger than earlywood. 3. The averaged mean values of ray height are respeetively 14.5 on Larix gmelini, 13.5 on Picea jezoensis and Pinus sylvestris, 9.7 on Pinus koraiensis, and this values of Sivelian coniferous wood are more larger than Korean samewood. 4. Ray height is comparatively small near the pith and tend to be increased to bark of wood. 5. The avereged values of ray spacing per mm are respectily 7.9-8.3 on Larix gmelini and Picea jezoensis, 7.1 on Abies sachaliensis, and 6.1-6.2 on Pinus koraiensis and Pinus sylvestris.
Variation of wood rays within a growth ring and along axial direction in Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaempferi, which are important Korean commercial softwoods, was examined to get some useful information for their effective utilization. Ray height in cell number and ray number per $0.25mm^2$ in tangential section were investigated by optical microscopy. The average heights of uniseriate rays in Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaempferi were 6.3 and 9.1 cells, respectively. The average numbers of uniseriate rays per $0.25mm^2$ in Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaempferi were 6.5 and 7.5, respectively. The average heights of fusiform rays were about 20 cells but were not significantly different in both species. From earlywood to latewood within a growth ring, the heights of uniseriate and fusiform rays decreased but their numbers remained almost constant. Along axial direction, the heights of uniseriate rays in both species increased with the increase of stem height, and the numbers of uniseriate rays per $0.25mm^2$ in Pinus koraiensis were nearly constant from 0.2 m to 5.2 m but increased up to 19.2 m beyond 5.2 m. However, a constant pattern in the numbers of uniseriate rays was not observed in Larix kaempferi. The heights of fusiform rays in both species were the highest in middle part of stems but were the lowest in base and top of trees. In conclusion, the ray variation pattern was comparatively clear within a growth ring but not clear along axial direction.
With the aim to investigation of decay resistance and optimum concentration in chrome-copper-arsenic(CCA) preservative treatment on the imported softwoods from Siberia and North america, preservative absorption after CCA impregnation, weight losses and degradation patterns by decay fungi were examined. The density and latewood rate of Siberia softwoods(Spruce and Larch) were higher than those of North america softwoods(Douglas-fir and Western hemlock), resulting in the decrease of the CCA preservative absorption in the Siberia softwoods. In the case of untreated softwoods, decay resistance against Coriolus versicolor was lower than against Tyromyces palustris. For CCA treated softwoods, preservative effectiveness increased with increase in concentration of CCA solution. When treated with 0.7% CCA solution, efficiency value was more than 80 and 90 for C. versicolor and T. palustris, respectively. From this results, in the CCA preservative treatment for imported softwoods, it can be concluded that optimum concentration of CCA solution is approximately 0.7%. The absorption of CCA preservative distributed in the range of 3.8 and $5.5kg/m^3$. After exposure to testing fungi, in the untreated softwoods, bore holes formed in the cell walls and bordered pits, moreover, bordered pit canals enlarged by the fungi. However, 0.5% CCA treated softwoods was almost no deterioration in the cell walls and bordered pits due to decay.
This study identified Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) and exotic pines (Pinus resinosa, Pinus sylvestris) with a similar anatomical structure using a dendro-anatomical method that applied dendrochronology, tracheid length, and uniseriate ray cell size. Korean red pine samples were collected from 13 national parks, while exotic pine samples were secured from two wood importers. Tracheid length was measured by distinguishing earlywood from latewood, and uniseriate ray height and cell number were determined. As the exotic pine tree-ring chronology was consistent with the foreign standard tree-ring chronology and displayed high statistical significance, the country and region where the pine samples had been felled and the exact felling date were confirmed. According to the results, which compared tracheid length and uniseriate ray size, no difference was observed between the Korean red and Russian pines. However, the tracheid length of the Russian pines turned out to be slightly longer than the length of the Korean red pine. Additional research securing a larger number of exotic pines (P.resinosa, P.sylvestris) is required to yield more accurate results in the future.
The study aims to observe the cellular anatomical properties of Dahurian larch and Japanese larch for the species identification. In addition, other factors - the ring width, tracheid length, density, and strength - were compared and analyzed to clarify their physical and mechanical properties. To the end, three Dahurian larch trees and three Japanese larch trees by each diameter class were collected as specimens from Jeongseon-eup, Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do, to conduct a stem analysis. It was found that the average stand age, average diameter at breast height, and average tree height of three Dahurian larch trees and Japanese larch trees were 74 years and 51 years, 442 mm and 352 mm, and 26.1 m and 20.8 m, respectively. The cellular anatomical difference between Dahurian larch and Japanese larch can be usually found by spiral thickening, considering that it doesn't occur in Dahurian larch at all, while rarely does in the ray tracheids of Japanese larch. However, in this study, spiral thickening was not observed in the radial section of Japanese larch. The average annual growth diameters measured at 1.2 m-height of Dahurian larch and Japanese larch were 5.167 mm and 5.954 mm, respectively. Meanwhile, arboreal growth of Japanese larch was observed to be higher than that of Dahurian larch. In the physical properties test, it was measured that the latewood proportion and oven-dry density of Dahurian larch with low annual diameter growth were higher than those of Japanese larch, while the mechanical properties of Dahurian larch wood were measured 2-7% higher than those of Japanese larch wood. The data obtained from this study are expected to be used as the basic reference for species identification between Dahurian larch and Japanese larch by DNA analysis.
