In mountainous area, Two parallel tunnels have been usually recognized as a road tunnel which has benefits in aspects of cost and stability. However, Design and construction of 2-Arch road tunnel are growing recently due to environmental destruction, compensation of land and difficulty of route separation. As studies are mainly undergoing on only guaranteeing stability and developing a waterproofing-drainage system to avoid water leakage through comprehension for characteristics of 2-arch tunnel behaviors, there is a tendency to evaluate quantity of support by empirical method with a tunnel which has a complicated cross-section and lack of construction ability. In this study, therefore, we made a plan of tunnel cross-section which had shown good construction ability and developed the waterproofing-drainage system which is able to solve the water leakage problem fundamentally by analyzing precedented 2-arch tunnels and investigating their sites in and out of nation. We also determined fixed quantity of support by a large-scale model test and numerical analysis. We want to contribute to 2-arch tunnel design hereafter introducing design procedure and method applied here.
In this paper, we summarize the lessons learned from the applications of the software reliability engineering to a large-scale software project. The considered software is the software system of the TDX-10 ISDN switching system. The considered software consists of many components, called functional blocks. These functional blocks serve as the unit of coding and test. The software is continuing to be developed by adding new functional blocks. We are mainly concerned with the analysis of the effects of these software components to software reliability and with the analysis of the reliability evolution. We analyze the static characteristics of the software related to software reliability using failure data collected during system test. We also discussed a pattern which represents a local and global growth of the software reliability as version evolves. To find the pattern of software of the TDX-10 ISDN system, we apply the S-shaped model to a collection of failure data sets of each evolutionary version and the Goel-Okumoto (G-O) model to a grouped overall failure data set. We expect this pattern analysis will be helpful to plan and manage necessary human/resources for a new similar software project which is developed under the same developing circumstances by estimating the total software failures with respect to its size and time.

Although there are several experimental techniques to evaluate the seismic behavior and performance of civil structures, small-scale models in mast of physical tests, instead of prototypes or large-scale models, would be used due to a limitation on capacities of testing equipments. However, the inelastic seismic response prediction of small-scale models has some discrepancies inherently because the similitude law is generally derived in the elastic range. Thus, a special attention is required to regard the seismic behavior of small-scale models as one of prototypes. In this paper, differences between prototypes and small-scale models pseudodynamically tested on steel column specimens are investigated and an alternative to minimize them is suggested. In general, small-scale models could have the distorted stiffness induced from some experimental errors on test setup, steel fabrication and so on. Therefore, a modified similitude law considering both a scale factor for length and a stiffness ratio of small-scale model to prototype is proposed. Using the modified similitude law to compensate experimental errors, the pseudodynamic test results from modified small-scale model are much improved as compared with the results of prototype. According to the pseudodynamic test results of small-scale steel models, it can be concluded that the modified similitude law proposed could be effective in simulating the seismic response of prototype structures.
PURPOSES : The applicability of the mechanics-based similarity concept (suggested by Feng et al.) for determining scaled variables, including length and load, via laboratory-scale tests and discrete element analysis, was evaluated. METHODS: Several studies on the similarity concept were reviewed. The exact scaling approach, a similarity concept described by Feng, was applied in order to determine an analytical solution of a free-falling ball. This solution can be considered one of the simplest conditions for discrete element analysis. RESULTS : The results revealed that 1) the exact scaling approach can be used to determine the scale of variables in laboratory tests and numerical analysis, 2) applying only a scale factor, via the exact scaling approach, is inadequate for the error-free replacement of small particles by large ones during discrete element analysis, 3) the level of continuity of flowable materials such as SCC and cement mortar seems to be an important criterion for evaluating the applicability of the similarity concept, and 4) additional conditions, such as the kinetics of particle, contact model, and geometry, must be taken into consideration to achieve the maximum radius of replacement particles during discrete element analysis. CONCLUSIONS : The concept of similarity is a convenient tool to evaluate the correspondence of scaled laboratory test or numerical analysis to physical condition. However, to achieve excellent correspondence, additional factors, such as the kinetics of particles, contact model, and geometry, must be taken into consideration.

The objective of this study is the evaluation of the performance of a large-scale respirometer (LSR) of 17.7 L in the determination of the methane generation rate constant (k) values. To achieve this objective, a comparison between anaerobic (GB21) and LSR tests was conducted. The data were modeled using a linear function, and the resulting correlation coefficient ($R^2$) of the linear regression is 0.91. This result shows that despite the aerobic conditions, the biodegradability values that were obtained from the LSR test produced results that are similar to those from the GB21 test. In this respect, the LSR test can be an indicator of the anaerobic biodegradability for landfill waste. In addition, the results show the high repeatability of the tests with an average coefficient of variance (CV) that is lower than 10%; furthermore, the CV for the LSR is lower than that of the GB21, which indicates that the LSR-test method could provide a better representation of waste samples. Therefore, the LSR method allows for both the prediction of the long-term biodegradation potential in a shorter length of time and the reduction of the sampling errors that are caused by the heterogeneity of waste samples. The k values are $0.156y^{-1}$ and $0.127y^{-1}$ for the cumulative biogas production (GB21) and the cumulative oxygen uptake for the LSR, respectively.

The techniques to make assessment of the structural integrity of underground structures include Infrared thermagraphy, GPR using the reflection of the electromagnetic wave, ultrasonic test, seismic methods using the propagation of elastic wave, and etc These methods have pros and cons in the assessment of the structural integrity in the complex environment of the underground structure, so that a single method alone is not enough to evaluate parameters required for the assessment. In this study, a new seismic method was proposed to improve the existing methods and to provide an additional information like stiffness of concrete. The proposed method combines the advantages of the modified impact-echo test and the SASW method. To verify the validity of the proposed method, a large scale model of a tunnel concrete liner was built and the proposed method was applied to the center of the model and also to the corner of the model which has several distinct reflection boundaries.
Geotextile tube is hydraulically filled with dredged materials and has been applied to coastal protection and scour protection, dewatering method of slurry, and isolation of contaminated material. Recently, geotextile tube technology is no longer alternative construction technique but suitable desired solution. In this paper, the numerical analysis was performed to investigate the behavior of geotextile tube with various properties of geotextile sheet and hydraulic pumping conditions. Numerical analysis was executed to compare with the results from the large-scale field model tests, and also with those of plane strain analysis and 3-D FEM analysis. A geotextile tube was modeled using the commercial finite element analysis program ABAQUS and the one-quarter of tube was modeled. Behavior of geotextile tube during the hydraulic pumping procedure was analyzed by comparing the large-scale field model test and numerical analysis. The shape variation and maximum tube height between the numerical analysis results and large-scale filed test results are turned out to be in a good agreement.
Laboratory investigation reveals that rockfills exhibit significant stress-path-dependent behavior during shearing, therefore realistic prediction of deformation of rockfill structures requires suitable constitutive models to properly reproduce such behavior. This paper evaluates the capability of a strain hardening model proposed by the authors, by comparing simulation results with large-scale triaxial stress-path test results. Despite of its simplicity, the model can simulate essential aspects of the shear behavior of rockfills, including the non-linear stress-strain relationship, the stress-dependence of the stiffness, the non-linear strength behavior, and the shearing contraction and dilatancy. More importantly, the model is shown to predict the markedly different stress-strain and volumetric behavior along various loading paths with fair accuracy. All parameters required for the model can be derived entirely from the results of conventional large triaxial tests with constant confining pressures.
In order to prove the applicability of rock bolts with compressible spacers, laboratory model tests and large scale model tests were conducted. Laboratory model tests were performed in various distance of compressible spacers to determine the optimal distance of compressible spacers. The optimal distance of compressible spacers was found that is 1/4 of rock bolts unit length. Large scale model tests that the size was 0.6 m (diameter) ${\times}$ 4.45 m (length) were conducted. Test results showed that pull out resistance could be increased up to 15% larger than that of unused case by using compressible spacers.

In this study, we performed three dimensional(3-D) modeling and simulation of terrain surfaces by using large scale aerial photographs. The objectives of this study are to use landscape analysis including 3-D database of built environments. The test area is selected around Olympic stadium located in Susung-gu, Daegu. A 1:5,000 scale of ortho-photo map is generated by photogrammetric procedures from 1:20,000 scale of aerial photographs, Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is also extracted from stereo aerial photographs or digital maps. The heights of buildings are determined using GPS control survey and aerial photographs in the test area, DEMs are extracted from the digital map. And then the two are combined three-dimensional changes of landscape views of buildings with terrain are simulated.
