To evaluate the hydraulic resistance behind bodies in a large scale grid numerical model, a drag stress term which is formulated by the drag force is introduced in the depth-integrated Reynolds equations. And also, the applicability and problems of this model are discussed through various numerical experiments where the analytical solutions exist. In the case of a single body, the error range of velocity difference between analytical and numerical solutions is within $\pm$10% and the wake width behind the body shows a good agreement with the analytical solution. When the drag coefficient and the eddy viscosity are precisely decided, the numerical solutions behind a row of bodies will be efficiently used in real situations.
The application of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) in a curvilinear coordinate system to the flow around a square cylinder is presented. In order to obtain sufficient resolution near the side of the cylinder, we use an O-type grid. Even with a curvilinear coordinate system, it is difficult to avoid the numerical oscillation arising in high-Reynolds-number flows past a bluff body, without using an extremely fine grid used. An upwind scheme has the effect of removing the numerical oscillations, but, it is accompanied by numerical dissipation that is a kind of an additional sub-grid scale effect. Firstly, we investigate the effect of numerical dissipation on the computational results in a case where turbulent dissipation is removed in order to clarify the differences between the effect of numerical dissipation. Next, the applicability and the limitations of the present method, which combine the dynamic SGS model with acceptable numerical dissipation, are discussed.

To predict the effects of air pollutant in the coastal region, we have developed the air pollutant model, the reaction model and the deposition of NO, $NO_2, and O_3$. And the numerical model of air pollutant concentration employed the nested technique to calculate with the higher resolution for the area. The nested technique used two grid systems, one for the large scale calculating region with the coarse mesh grid (CMG) and the other for the small scale region with the fine grid (FMG). In other to prove the validity of the simulation model the calculations were conducted for the present situation. The results of them reasonably agree with the observed data and proved the validity of the model.
Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is a Lagrangian computational fluid dynamics method that has been widely used in the analysis of physical phenomena characterized by large deformation or multi-phase flow analysis, including free surface. Despite the recent implementation of eddy-viscosity models in SPH methodology, sophisticated turbulent analysis using Lagrangian methodology has been limited due to the lack of computational performance and numerical consistency. In this study, we implement the standard and dynamic Smagorinsky model and dynamic Vreman model as sub-particle scale models based on a weakly compressible SPH solver. The large eddy simulation method is numerically identical to the spatial discretization method of smoothed particle dynamics, enabling the intuitive implementation of the turbulence model. Furthermore, there is no additional filtering process required for physical variables since the sub-grid scale filtering is inherently processed in the kernel interpolation. We simulate lid-driven flow under transition and turbulent conditions as a benchmark. The simulation results show that the dynamic Vreman model produces consistent results with experimental and numerical research regarding Reynolds averaged physical quantities and flow structure. Spectral analysis also confirms that it is possible to analyze turbulent eddies with a smaller length scale using the dynamic Vreman model with the same particle size.

Passive gas dispersions over a 1/1000 scale terrain model at Eiffel type wind tunnel were reproduced by numerical simulation. Large eddy simulation was used to treat the sub-grid scale turbulences. The terrain features were represented by millions of point forces densely distributed over the solid surface using the virtual boundary method. The model simulations agreed very well with the experiments in a consistent fashion for all wind directions. The measured profiles of the wind speeds as well as the tracer gas concentrations were nicely simulated by the CFD model at most locations scattered over the model terrain. With scale factor adjusted and the thermal stratification effects incorporated, the CFD model was expected to provide reliable information on pollutant dispersions over the real complex terrains.

A large eddy simulation (LES) of a turbulent channel flow is performed by using the third order low-storage Runge-Kutta method in time and second order finite difference formulation in space with staggered grid at a Reynolds number, $Re_{\tau}=590$ based on the channel half width, ${\delta}$ and wall shear velocity, $u_{\tau}$. To reduce the calculation cost of LES, algebraic wall model (AWM) is applied to approximate the near-wall region. The computation is performed in a domain of $2{\pi}{\delta}{\times}2{\delta}{\times}{\pi}{\delta}$ with $32{\times}20{\times}32$ grid points. Standard Smagorinsky model is used for subgrid-scale (SGS) modeling. Essential turbulence statistics of the flow field are computed and compared with Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data and LES data using no wall model. Agreements as well as discrepancies are discussed. The flow structures in the computed flow field have also been discussed and compared with LES data using no wall model.

Two aspects of Large-Eddy Simulation(LES) are investigated in order to improve its performance. The first one is on how to determine the model coefficient in conjunction with a dynamic subgrid-scale model, and the second one is on a wall-layer model(WLM) which allows one to skip near-wall regions to save a large number of grid points otherwise required. Especially, a WLM suitable for a separated flow is considered. Firstly, an averaging technique to calculate the model coefficient of dynamic subgrid-scale modeling(DSGSM) is introduced. The technique is based on the concept of local averaging, and useful to stabilize numerical solution in conjunction with LES of complex turbulent flows using DSGSM. It is relatively simple to implement, and takes very low overhead in CPU time. It is also able to detect the region of negative model coefficient where the "backscattering" of turbulence energy occurs. Secondly, a wall-layer model based on a local turbulence intensity is considered. It locally determines wall-shear stresses depending on the local flow situations including separation, and yields better predictions in separated regions than the conventional WLM. The two techniques are tested for a turbulent obstacle flow, and show the direction of further improvements.rovements.
A large-scale finite element simulation and modeling method is presented for environmental flows in urban area. Parallel stabilized finite element method based on domain decomposition method is employed for the numerical simulation. Several GIS and CAD data are used for the preparation of the shape model for landform and urban structures. The present method Is applied to the simulation of flood flow and wind flow In urban area. The present method is shown to be a useful planning and design tool for the natural disasters and the change of environments in urban area.

A numerical analysis is carried out for the marine propellers in open water conditions to investigate the effect of the wall treatments in model and full scale. The standard wall function to apply the low of the wall and the two layer zonal model to calculate the whole boundary layer for a transition phenomenon are used with one turbulence model. To determine an appropriate distance of the first grid point from the wall when using the wall function, a formula based on Reynolds number is suggested, which can estimate the maximum y+ satisfying the logarithmic law. In the model scale, it is confirmed that a transition calculation is required for a model scale propeller with low Reynolds number that the transient region appears widely. While in the full scale, the wall function calculation is recommended for efficient calculations due to the turbulence dominant flow for large Reynolds number.
A large eddy simulation method with unstructured mesh is presented. Two explicit filtering procedures are adopted for reducing the aliasing error of the nonlinear convective term and measuring the level of subgrid scale velocity fluctuation, respectively. The developed subgrid scale model is basically an eddy viscosity model which depends on both local velocity fluctuation level and local grid scale. As a validation problem, the flows around a sphere of several Reynolds numbers are simulated and some characteristic quantities are compared to experimental data and numerical results in the literature.
