Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are essential components in water electrolysis systems, serving to physically separate the generated hydrogen and oxygen gases while enabling the selective transport of hydroxide ions between electrodes. Key characteristics sought in AEMs include high ion conductivity and robust chemical and mechanical stability in alkaline. In this study, quaternized Poly(terphenyl piperidinium)/cellulose nanocrystals (qPTP/CNC) mixed matrix membrane was fabricated. The polymer matrix, PTP, was synthesized via super-acid polymerization, known for its excellent ion conductivity and alkaline durability. The qPTP/CNC membrane showed a dense and uniform morphology without significant voids or large aggregates at the polymer-nanoparticle interface. The qPTP/CNC membrane containing 2 wt% CNC demonstrated a high ion exchange capacity of 1.90 mmol/g, coupled with low water uptake (9.09%) and swelling ratio (5.56%). Additionally, the qPTP/CNC membrane showed significantly lower resistance and superior alkaline stability (384 hours at 50℃ in 1 M KOH) compared to the commercial FAA-3-50 membrane. These results highlight the potential of hydrophilic additive CNC in enhancing ion conductivity and alkaline durability of ion exchange membranes.
Gentrification, caused by residents who are being forced out due to the rise of rent with vitalization by an excessive increase of city tourists and Touristification, meaning of phenomenon of residents' migration caused by residential area turning into tourist attraction have recently pointed out as a global problem. In Korea, the phenomenon such as environmental pollution, the rise of land value and rent, and the weakening of community culture in Jeju island and Bukchon Hanok Village has appeared as well. This phenomenon has become a serious problem by hindering resident's quality of life. In this circumstance, Smart tourism city has been regarded as a solution of these problems. Hence, this study chose Busan city, which has been designated as a smart city since 2015, and examined the complex impacts of the economic benefits, social costs, environmental substantiality, cultural benefits, and technical effects derived from tourism development on the residents' deteriorated quality of life based on Fuzzy-set Qualitative Analysis (fsQCA). As a result, three patterns of the hindrance to residents' quality of life were derived. If social costs of tourism development are perceived to be large, the residents perceive deteriorated quality of life, even if they recognize essential benefits (technological and economic benefits) (Pattern #1) or secondary benefits (environmental and cultural benefits) (Pattern #2) of tourism development. In addition, some residents were found not to recognize any benefits of tourism development (Pattern #3).

Mn-doped Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3-PbTiO3 (Mn:PIN-PMN-PT) single crystals, which exhibit improved phase transition temperatures and coercive field properties compared to Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PIN-PMN-PT) single crystals, are expected to be utilized in high-power acoustic transducers. Bridgeman method, growing single crystals along the axial direction from melt, is most widely used method for single crystal growth with large size and high quality. However, single crystal boules grown by the Bridgeman method demonstrate a PT compositional variation, giving rise a distribution of crystal structure and material properties along the growing axis. To employ piezoelectric single crystals grown by the Bridgeman method for acoustic transducers, it is essential to investigate their overall property distribution. In this study, the compositional distribution and property variation of Mn:PIN-PMN-PT single crystals grown by the Bridgeman method was investigated. Measured compositional distribution of PT was from 29% to 32.5% in the Rhombohedral crystal region of the boule. Two types of specimen, [011]-poled Mn:PIN-PMN-29PT and Mn:PIN-PMN-32PT single crystals, were fabricated and tested to obtain full property variation at both ends of the Rhombohedral crystal region. The properties related to the 32 directional vibration mode and the properties related to high-power driving were measured to confirm the overall distribution of properties by composition.

Despite countries' efforts to reduce carbon emissions, carbon emissions have increased in recent decades along with energy use, of which building energy uses account for a large proportion. Energy savings are essential as a strategy to reduce carbon emissions in existing buildings. The field experiment on the roof of a building located in Seoul was designed to measure the temperature reduction effect of green roof with rainwater storage tank to reduce cooling energy consumption in summer. The results showed that the mean mean surface temperature under the green roof was 14.77 degrees lower than that of the non-green roof from 13:00 P.M. to 15:00 P.M., which would have a great effect on reducing cooling energy. From 01:00 A.M. to 03:00 A.M., the effect was 3.36 degrees, showing that tropical nights could be improved. The temperature reduction effect due to the rainwater storage system increased by 1.45 degrees during the day and decreased by 0.63 degrees at night. The storage system can be strategically utilized to reduce carbon emissions during the week when cooling energy increases significantly.

Objectives: Estimating the number of deaths caused by smoking is crucial for developing and evaluating tobacco control and smoking cessation policies. This study aimed to determine smoking-attributable mortality (SAM) in Korea in 2020. Methods: Four large-scale cohorts from Korea were analyzed. A Cox proportional-hazards model was used to determine the hazard ratios (HRs) of smoking-related death. By conducting a meta-analysis of these HRs, the pooled HRs of smoking-related death for 41 diseases were estimated. Population-attributable fractions (PAFs) were calculated based on the smoking prevalence for 1995 in conjunction with the pooled HRs. Subsequently, SAM was derived using the PAF and the number of deaths recorded for each disease in 2020. Results: The pooled HR for all-cause mortality attributable to smoking was 1.73 for current men smokers (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.53 to 1.95) and 1.63 for current women smokers (95% CI, 1.37 to 1.94). Smoking accounted for 33.2% of all-cause deaths in men and 4.6% in women. Additionally, it was a factor in 71.8% of men lung cancer deaths and 11.9% of women lung cancer deaths. In 2020, smoking was responsible for 53 930 men deaths and 6283 women deaths, totaling 60 213 deaths. Conclusions: Cigarette smoking was responsible for a significant number of deaths in Korea in 2020. Monitoring the impact and societal burden of smoking is essential for effective tobacco control and harm prevention policies.

Recently, wind power has been gaining attention as a highly efficient renewable energy source, leading to various technological developments worldwide. Typically, wind power is operated in the form of large wind farms with many wind turbines installed in areas rich in wind resources. However, in developing countries or regions isolated from the power grid, off-grid small wind power systems are emerging as an efficient solution. To efficiently operate and expand off-grid small-scale power systems, the development of real-time monitoring systems is required. For the efficient operation of small wind power systems, it is essential to develop real-time monitoring systems that can actively respond to excessive wind speeds and various environmental factors, as well as ensure the stable supply of produced power to small areas or facilities through an Energy Storage System (ESS). The implemented system monitors turbine RPM, power generation, brake operation, and more to create an optimal operating environment. The developed small wind power system can be utilized in remote road lighting, marine leisure facilities, mobile communication base stations, and other applications, contributing to the development of the RE100 industry ecosystem.

The tidal creek dependent mass transport characteristic in Gyeong-Gi Bay (west coast of Korea) was studied using field measured data and numerical model. Gyeong-Gi Bay consists of 3 main tidal channels and contains a well-developed vast tidal flat. This region is famous for its large tidal difference and strong current. We aim to study the effect of tidal creek in the tidal flat on the mass exchange between the estuary and the ocean. For numerical application, the application of unstructured grid feature is essential, since the tidal creek has complicated shape and form. For this purpose, the FVCOM is applied to the study area and simulation is performed for 2 different cases. In case A, geographic characteristics of the tidal creek is ignored in the numerical grid and in case B, the tidal creek are constructed using unstructured grid. And these 2 cases are compared with the field measured cross-channel mass transport data. The cross-channel mass transport at the Yeomha waterway mouth and Incheon harbor was measured in June, 9~10 (Spring tide) and 17~18 (Neap tide), 2009. CTD casting and ADCP cross-channel transect was conducted 13 times in one tidal cycle. The observation data analysis results showed that mass transport has characteristic of the ebb dominance Line 1 (Yeomha waterway mouth), on the other hand, a flood dominant characteristic is shown in Line 2 (Incheon harbor front). By comparing the numerical model (case A & B) with observation data, we found that the case B results show much better agreement with measurement data than case A. It is showed that the geographic feature of tidal creek should be considered in grid design of numerical model in order to understand the mass transport characteristics over large tidal flat area.

Protein-protein interactions regulate the subcellular localization and function of receptors, enzymes, and cytoskeletal proteins. Proteins containing the postsynaptic density-95/disks large/zonula occludens-1 (PDZ) domain have potential to act as scaffolding proteins and play a pivotal role in various processes, such as synaptic plasticity, neural guidance, and development, as well as in the pathophysiology of many diseases. Multi-PDZ domain protein 1 (MUPP1), which has 13 PDZ domains, has a scaffolding function in the clustering of surface receptors, organization of signaling complexes, and coordination of cytoskeletal dynamics. However, the cellular function of MUPP1 has not been fully elucidated. In the present study, a yeast two-hybrid system was used to identify proteins that interacted with the N-terminal PDZ domain of MUPP1. The results revealed an interaction between MUPP1 and Wdpcp (formerly known as Fritz). Wdpcp was identified as a planar cell polarity (PCP) effector, which is known to have a role in collective cell migration and cilia formation. Wdpcp bound to the PDZ1 domain but not to other PDZ domains of MUPP1. The C-terminal end of Wdpcp was essential for the interaction with MUPP1 in the yeast two-hybrid assay. This interaction was further confirmed in a glutathione S-transferase (GST) pull-down assay. When coexpressed in HEK-293T cells, Wdpcp was coimmunoprecipitated with MUPP1. In addition, MUPP1 colocalized with Wdpcp at the same subcellular region in cells. Collectively, these results suggest that the MUPP1-Wdpcp interaction could modulate actin cytoskeleton dynamics and polarized cell migration.
A study on the amino acid composition of raw frozen krill, and krill solubles manufactured in forms of paste and powder has been carried out. The raw frozen krill was thawed, chopped, mixed and homogenized with same amount of water. The mixture was autolyzed or hydrolyzed by tile addition of $0.2\%$ pronase-p, a commercial proteolytic enzyme, to the weight of the raw frozen krill at $45^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. After a thermal inactivation of enzymes at $95^{\circ}C$ for 15 minutes, the autolysate and the hydrolysate were centrifuged and filtered through gauzes, respectively, and then tile lipid layer in the supernatant was removed, The autolysate and the hydrolysate were finally concentrated under reduced atmospheric pressure in a rotary vacuum evaporator at $45^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour to produce the krill solubles in form of paste. The powdered krill solubles were prepared by the addition of $5\%$ starch to the autolysate and hydrolysate and by means of concentration in the rotary vacuum evaporator at $45^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes and a forced air drying at $58^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours with a air velocity of 3m/sec. Among the amino acids in raw frozen krill, glutamic acid, lysine, and aspartic acid showed high values in quantity and then followed leucine, alanine, arginine, glycine and proline. The qnantity of histidine was very small and that of cystine was only in trace. The krill solubles in forms of paste and powder prepared by autolysis and hydrolysis with pronase-p revealed almost the same patterns in amino acid composition as in raw frozen krill. In case of free amino acids, a large quantity of it in raw frozen krill consisted of lysine, arginine, proline, alanine and leucine. The quantities of cystine, histidine and glutamic acid were, in contrast, very small. In the soluble krill paste prepared by autolysis, lysine, leucine, threonine and alanine existed in large quantities among the free amino acids and cystine, aspartic acid and histidine existed in small quantities. The contents of almost all of the free amino acids ill soluble krill paste perpared by hydrolysis with pronase-p were increased slightly as compared with those in soluble krill paste prepared by autolysis. In this product, the contents of cystine, histidine and serine were very low and lysine, leucine, arginine and proline were the dominant group in quantities among the free amino acids. The krill solubles in forms of paste and powder were not inferior to whole egg in the view point of its essential amino acid composition.

Cell adhesion molecules determine the cell-cell binding and the interactions between cells and extracellular signals. Cell-cell junctional complexes, which maintain the structural integrity of tissues, consist of more than 50 proteins including multi-PDZ domain protein 1 (MUPP1). MUPP1 contains 13 postsynaptic density-95/disks large/zonula occludens-1 (PDZ) domains and serves a scaffolding function for transmembrane proteins and cytoskeletal proteins or signaling proteins, but the mechanism how MUPP1 links and stabilizes the juxtamembrane proteins has not yet been elucidated. We used the yeast two-hybrid system to identify proteins that interact with PDZ domains of MUPP1. We found an interaction between MUPP1 and cell adhesion molecule 1 (Cadm1, also known as SynCAM1, Necl-2, or TSLC1). Cadm1 bound to the second PDZ domain of MUPP1. The carboxyl (C)-terminal end of Cadm1 has a type II PDZ-association motif (-Y-F-I) which was essential for the interaction with MUPP1 in the yeast two-hybrid assay. MUPP1 also bound to the C-terminal cytoplasmic tail region of other Cadm family members (Cadm2, Cadm3, and Cadm4). In addition, these protein-protein interactions were observed in the glutathione S-transferase (GST) pull-down assay and by co-immunoprecipitation. Anti-MUPP1 antibody co-immunoprecipitated Cadm1 and Cadm4 with MUPP1 from mouse brain extracts. These results suggest that MUPP1 could mediate interaction between Cadms and cytoskeletal proteins.
