  • To understand the developmental process of the gait pattern from infancy to the adult, a gait analysis for a 14 months female infant has been performed for ten weeks. The gait parameters has been measured every other week since the week when she was able to walk without aid. The infant gait data at the tenth week of the test shows a similar pattern to the adult gait in many aspects including initial knee flexion, initial ankle dorsiflexion, the push-off pattern, etc. There is not a significant change in the hip flexion angle from week to week from the two weeks after the test started. To check the individuality in the collected data, more infant subjects are being tested presently.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate differences of landing strategy between people with or without chronic ankle instability (CAI) during double-leg drop landing. Method: 34 male adults participated in this study (CAI = 16, Normal = 18). Participants performed double-leg drop landing task on a 30 cm height and 20 cm horizontal distance away from the force plate. Lower Extremities Kinetic and Kinematic data were obtained using 8 motion capture cameras and 2 force plates and loading rate was calculated. Independent samples t-test were used to identify differences between groups. Results: Compared with normal group, CAI group exhibits significantly less hip internal rotation angle (CAI = 1.52±8.12, Normal = 10.63±8.44, p = 0.003), greater knee valgus angle (CAI = -6.78±5.03, Normal = -12.38 ±6.78, p = 0.011), greater ankle eversion moment (CAI = 0.0001±0.02, Normal = -0.03±0.05, p = 0.043), greater loading Rate (CAI = 32.65±15.52, Normal = 18.43±10.87, p = 0.003) on their affected limb during maximum vertical Ground Reaction Force moment. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that CAI group exhibits compensatory movement to avoid ankle inversion during double-leg drop landing compared with normal group. Further study about how changed kinetic and kinematic affect shock absorption ability and injury risk in participants with CAI is needed.

  • Sit to stand(STS) movement is one of the most common activity in daily life. In addition, Korean traditionally stand up from various sitting heights in one's daily life compared to other foreigners. As Korea enter rapidly to the aging society, needs of the elderly's independent life are increasing. Therefore the importance of research about the analysis of elderly's activity in daily life is rapidly increasing. In this study, we analyzed joint movements and changes of muscle length during STS(sit-to-stand) at various sitting heights(table seat, bath seat, bottom) in the Korean elderly's daily life by using the motion analysis and musculoskeletal modeling. Ten Korean elderly and young were participated in this experiment. Three heights of sitting posture which could represent typical sitting in Korean daily life were chosen as table seat(42cm), bath seat(21cm) and bottom(0cm). As the results, the elderly showed both smaller knee/hip flexion and larger trunk flexion relatively in comparison to the young during table seat STS. The elderly also showed larger dorsiflexion and smaller ROM of knee, hip, trunk compared to the young during bath seat STS. Additionally, the elderly showed larger plantarflexion, hip flexion, smaller knee flexion and trunk flexion during the first half of bottom STS and larger knee flexion, hip flexion and trunk flexion during the second half of bottom STS. In addition, we could know contraction and relaxation characters of major muscles in lower limb during various STS through the analysis of changes in muscle length by musculoskeltal modeling.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of gender difference in injury experience on biomechanical variables of lower extremity during two leg drop landing. 20 male(injury experience=8, non-injury experience=12) and 20 female(injury experience=11, non-Injury Experience=9) in their 20's were selected as subjects. Two-way mixed ANOVA was performed on the biomechanical variables obtained from the two leg drop landing in a 45cm height box and post-test was performed with bonferroni adjustment(p <.05). The results of this study suggest that the group of female who injury experience could induce the reduction of the peak vertical ground reaction force by increasing the valgus and internal rotation of the knee joint and flexion and internal rotation of the hip joint. In the INE(injury non-experienced) female group, the peak knee flexion angle was the smallest, as well as the flexion of the hip joint and the external rotation angle, and the peak vertical ground reaction force was the highest. On the other hand, the INE female group showed high vertical ground reaction force because they did not utilize the knee and hip joints relatively than the IE(injury experienced) female group, this means that it is relatively exposed to the risk of injury. Therefore, it was found that gender difference in injury experience is a factor affecting factors of knee and hip joint movement and peak vertical GRF(ground reaction force).

  • This study develops baseball uniforms for amateur baseball players with excellent appearance and functional movement. This study selected a conventional baseball uniform and developed a new one for amateur baseball players with improved function and appearance based on previous research results. In case of developed baseball uniform materials, this study used polyurethane mixed fabric for the top to improve flexibility. A mesh material was used at the armpit, back, and bottom of the top, side line of pants and pockets to improve breathability. In addition, quilted material was added to the knee to improve durability and protection. For the patterns and design, this study used a gusset under the arm to assist in comfortable movement as well as reduced the length of the top and circumference of the hem to decrease unnecessary parts. For the pants, this study used a waistband gripper to avoid the top riding up, added darts behind the knees to bend comfortably, and added additional fabric inside the hem to prevent dirt. In addition, we reduced the width and length of the pants. Wearing evaluation was divided into appearance evaluation by experts and on-site-wearing test by baseball players. The wearing evaluation results for the developed baseball uniform indicated higher evaluations than a conventional baseball uniform in all sections as well as showed significant differences in all sections. The result of movement adaptability evaluation showed the highest satisfaction for 'the top does not ride up' and 'dirt do not get in'.

  • The kinematic variables for swimming and fin-swimming start motions were analyzed and compared using 3-dimensional cinematography. For the swimming start, the arm segment moved towards the upper rear and trunk towards the upper front followed by a descent towards the lower front, while the fin-swimming start motion showed movement towards the lower front for all segments. The total body center of gravity for the swimming start showed horizontal movement far to the front followed by a rapid descent while the fin-swimming start showed close movement towards the lower front in a short period of time. Upon entering the water, the center of gravity for swimming showed high vertical velocities while fin swimming had high horizontal velocities. For both swimming and fin swimming, the upper extremity velocity had more influence on the total center of gravity velocity than the lower extremities. Flexion of the hip joint was observed before the jump for the fin swimming start while the swimming start showed two flexions in mid-air succeeding the jump. The flexion and extension movements at the knee joint during the fin-swimming start motion were shown to be larger and more rapid than those of fin-swimming.
