Improvement of a radio-frequency/vacuum drying ability and physical properties of Iroko Lumber (Iroko재(材)의 고주파진공건조성 및 물리적 성질 개선)

  • This study was carried out to investigate a radio-frequency/vacuum (RF/V) drying ability and physical properties of the green boards and the pre-kiln dried boards with 40 mm thickness, and the 70 mm-thick green board of Iroko (Milicia excelsa). The major results were summarized as follows; The drying time from initial moisture content (MC) of 110% to approximate 6% MC for a 40mm-thick green board was 192 hours, and about 200 hours for the 70 mm-thick green board, respectively and so the RF/V drying times were dramatically shortened compared to conventional kiln drying time. The case hardenings at the RF/V drying completion stage test were very negligible, thus represented almost no existence of the residual stress. The checks were very slightly formed on all of the boards during the RF/V drying test, but crook appeared quite severely. During the accelerating test, the water-resistant treated specimens had not experienced any signs of checking occurred, whereas the control boards had encountered very frequent occurrences of end checking and slight surface checking. There were no observations of warping and discoloring regardless of the treatment.

Investigating the Color Differences of 90 ${\times}$ 90 mm Larch Squares Heat-treated at Various Temperatures (처리 온도에 따른 90 ${\times}$ 90 mm 낙엽송 각재의 재색 차이 조사)

  • To make value-added products from small-diameter larch logs it is necessary to reduce the color variation between boards. The effect of heat treatment on the color variation was investigated. Four hundred air-dried larch squares were visually classified into six groups. The largest color difference index between them was 8.8. When they were kiln-dried lower than $120^{\circ}C$, their average color difference indexes decreased to less than 6.0 compared with the air-dried. However statistical analyses revealed that kiln-drying largely increased the variation of the indexes of the color elements. Heat-treatment above $150^{\circ}C$ increased the color difference indexes with the increase of temperature. The variation of color difference indexes within a group at $190^{\circ}C$ were less than the groups at $150^{\circ}C$ and $170^{\circ}C$. It implies that heat treatment at $190^{\circ}C$ could make the color of larch squares uniform.

Carbonaceous Aerosols Generated from Wood Charcoal Production Plants in the South Korea Context

  • Herein, a case study discussing the effect of carbonaceous aerosol pollution, which is emitted during the charcoal kiln manufacturing processes or carbonization processes, on the atmospheric environment is presented . In South Korea, in situ analysis of different charcoal production plants specialized in the production of charcoal sauna indicate that the emitted organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) aerosols are significantly influenced by the nature of the biomass and technological processes, i.e., treatment or emissions abatement systems for the exhaust effluent gases. In detail, total carbon (TC), which is calculated as the sum of OC and EC emission factors, varied widely from a charcoal production site to another ranging from 21.8 to 35.8 gTC/kg-oak, where the mean value for the considered production sites was approximately 28 gTC/kg-oak (N = 7 and sum = 196.4). Results indicate that the emission factors from a modern charcoal production process in South Korea are quantitatively lower in comparison with the traditional kiln. This study aims to propose advanced wood processes for the production of charcoal from the viewpoint of environmental protection policy and green engineering.

Physiological and Psychological Effects of Combined Forest/Thermal Therapy on Depressive Symptoms in Individuals with Alcohol and Nicotine Dependency

  • This study verified the effect of a combined forest/thermal therapy (FT/TT) program on participants with depressive symptoms and smoking or alcohol dependence. The participants included 20 people in the experimental group and 18 people in the control group. The experimental group participated in the FT/TT program for 2 nights and 3 days at the National Center for Forest Healing, in Hoengseong (National Hoengseong Supchewon), and a charcoal kiln operated by the Gangwon Charcoal Farming Association. The control group carried out their daily life for the same period. Psychological, physiological, and biochemical tests were conducted to determine the effect of the program. The results showed that there were significant improvements in stress, anxiety, depression, sleep quality, sleep satisfaction, and IL-6 levels. However, no significant difference was found in the cortisol, serotonin and melatonin levels between the experimental and control groups. Thus, the FT/TT therapy had psychological and biochemical effects on individuals with depression and nicotine or alcohol dependency. Further studies should be conducted to verify the effect of forest healing in various conditions.

A Study on the Characteristics and the Kiln Site of Production of the Buncheong Ware Excavated from the Placenta Chamber (Taesil) in Seongju during the Reign of King Sejong (1418-1450) in the Joseon Dynasty (세종대(1418~1450) 성주 세종대왕자(世宗大王子) 태실(胎室) 출토 <분청사기 상감연판문 반구형뚜껑>의 제작 특징과 제작지 고찰)

  • In Seongju, Gyengsangbuk-do, the Placenta Chamber (胎室, Taesil) of 18 sons and a son of the crown prince of King Sejong(世宗大王) is located in one place. Taesil refers to the place where the umbilical cord and placenta, which are separated when the baby is born, are placed in a jar made of pottery and stone box and then buried on the ground. The placenta chamber in Seongju has the Buncheong ware (粉靑沙器) cover buried on the ground to protect the baby's placenta. These covers are all hemispherical, with a diameter of more the 20cm. The decorations were made using black and white inlaid techniques only on the outside. The Buncheong ware cover with this shape and pattern has been confirmed only in the placenta chamber in Seongju. This study targets 6 of the Buncheong ware cover whose owners were identified, when and where they were prepared, what the stylistic features and meanings are, and where it was produced. The results of the study are as follows. First, ss a result of reviewing the production background and procurement system of this bowl, it was inferred that it was sourced from Jangheunggo (長興庫) at the central government office, between 1436 and 1439, when the event to bury the placenta of royal members in the ground was the most active. Second, it analyzed the unique features of this cover, such as the shape, pattern, and baked traces. The shape and pattern were compared to the ritual objects contained in the Sejong Silok Oryeui (『世宗實錄』 「五禮」, Five Rites of King Sejong Chronicle) and the lid of the royal placenta jar made in the 15th and 16th centuries. Third, this study suggests that the baking method was based on the shape and location of the traces remaining outside the cover. Finally, the following data were used to estimate the production site: the relationship with the 'Jagiso (磁器所, ceramic workshop) registered in the Sejong Silok Jiriji (『世宗實錄』 「地理志」, Geographical Appendix of King Sejong Chronicle); various records of contribution and dedication about the Buncheong ware made here; and the Buncheong ware and related tools excavated from the kiln site in the area. The place where the Buncheong ware cover was produced is estimated to be the most likely production site for the kiln site in Chunghyo-dong Kiln Site, located in Jeolla-do province by synthesizing the data above.

Inactivation of Asbestos-Containing Slate Using High-Temperature Plasma Reactor (플라즈마 고온반응기를 이용한 폐슬레이트 비활성화 연구)

  • The capacity of the designated landfill site for asbestos-containing waste is approaching its limit because the amount of asbestos-containing slate is increasing every year. There is a need for a method that can safely and inexpensively treat asbestos-containing slate in large capacity and at the same time recycle it. A cement kiln can be an alternative for heat treatment of asbestos-containing slate. We intend to develop a pilot scale device that can simulate the high temperature environment of a cement kiln using a high temperature plasma reactor in this study. In addition, this reactor can be used to inactivate asbestos in the slate and to synthesize one of the minerals of cement, to confirm the possibility of recycling as a cement raw material. The high-temperature plasma reactor as a pilot scale experimental apparatus was manufactured by downsizing to 1/50 the size of an actual cement kiln. The experimental conditions for the deactivation test of the asbestos-containing slate are the same as the firing time of the cement kiln, increasing the temperature to 200-2,000℃ at 100℃ intervals for 20 minutes. XRD, PLM, and TEM-EDS analyses were used to characterize mineralogical characteristics of the slate before and after treatment. It was confirmed that chrysotile [Mg3Si2O5(OH)4] and calcite (CaCO3) in the slate was transformed into forsterite (Mg2SiO4) and calcium silicate (Ca2SiO4), a cement constituent mineral, at 1,500℃ or higher. Therefore, this study may be suggested the economically and safely inactivating large capacity asbestos-containing slate using a cement kiln and the inactivated slate via heat treatment can be recycled as a cement raw material.

A Study on the date of the black glazed bowls with "Gongyu (供御)" or "Jinzhan (進琖)" of Jian ware (건요(建窯) "공어(供御)"·"진잔(進琖)"명흑유완(銘黑釉碗)의 제작시기 문제)

  • This study specifically examined the date of the black glazed bowls marked with "Gongyu (供御)" or "Jinzhan (進琖)" of Jian ware, one of the key research topics related to the bowls. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. Jian Kiln produced various shapes of black glazed bowls, but almost all of the inscriptions of "Gongyu (供御)" or "Jinzhan (進琖)" are found only in two certain type bowls: Type I, the Shukou type bowls (束口碗), or Type II, the Piekou type bowls (撇口碗). Of these, there are significantly more of the former in existence. For Type I bowls marked with "Gongyu (供御)" or "Jinzhan (進琖)", the mouth of the bowls is slightly evaginated outwards, and the inclination angle of the side slope is about 50°. The shape feature, Shukou (束口) is formed which is slightly indented around the bowl about 0.3~0.5cm below the mouth of bowl. And the height of the bowls is relatively low compared to other Type I black glazed bowls produced by Jian Kiln, so the height divided by the diameter is 0.5 or less. There is little difference in shape between the black glazed bowls marked with "Gongyu (供御) and those with "Jinzhan (進琖)". However, taking into consideration the excavation situation of both type bowls, the former is considered to be ahead of the latter in terms of production date. On the other hand, the black glazed bowls of Jian ware, which have the same shape features as the Type I bowls marked with "Gongyu (供御)" or "Jinzhan (進琖)" have not been found in the tombs dating from the end of the 12th to the beginning of the 13th century from which typical Jian kiln black glazed bowls of the same type were excavated. For the Hakata site (博多遺址) in Japan, the black glazed bowls with such a shape feature were excavated from early 12th century sites, rather than from the late 12th to early 13th century sites at which the typical black glazed bowls of Jian kiln were found. Considering that the black glazed bowls from Fujian province were imported into Hakata with almost no time gap, it is very unlikely that the production time of Type I black glazed bowls marked with "Gongyu (供御)" or "Jinzhan (進琖)" will deviate from the early 12th century. In conclusion, it is considered that the black glazed bowls marked with "Gongyu (供御)" or "Jinzhan (進琖)" of Jian ware were produced in the early 12th century.

Incineration Process of Double Base Propellant for Demilitarization (더블 베이스 추진제의 비군사화 소각공정)

  • The thermal decomposition of waste energetic materials such as TNT, RDX and composition B in a commercial rotary kiln has previously been carried out. As part of the demilitarization process, the thermal decomposition of homogeneous double base propellant (DB) used in M8 and consisting predominantly of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine is examined with respect to a number of operating conditions. A single condensed phase reaction with 4 species and 365 gas phase reactions and 59 species are considered. Simulation results show the sensitivity of the thermal decomposition of DB with temperature and velocity. At relatively low velocity with constant inlet hot air temperature, temperature in the rotary kiln was found to be highest, 953 K and 1300 K for cases 3 and 6 respectively. Illustrating that optimum operating temperature can be achieved by controlling the inlet velocity without additional cooling systems.

Studies on Predicting the Kiln Drying Time and Moisture Content of Board and Dimension Lumber of Pinus densiflora using an Internal Moisture Diffusion Model of Softwood (침엽수재(針葉樹材)의 수분확산(水分擴散)모델을 이용(利用)한 소나무판재(板材)와 평소각재(平小角材)의 열기건조(熱氣乾燥) 시간(時間)과 함수율(含水率) 추정(推定)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • This experiment was carried out to know the mothod of changing the step of moisture content schedule with time in conventional kiln drying. For the purpose of this object. we made drying model by applying the moisture diffusion model by J.FSiau(1984) to average moisture content equation by J.Crank(1956) derived it from Fick's second law. And to verify this method of drying model. 2.5cm-thick boards and 5.0cm-thick dimension lumbers of Pinus densiflora were kiln-dried with the schedule of T11-C3 and T10-C4, respectively. And then the drying rates were investigated and compared with those calculated from drying model. The results obtained were as follows 1. Average drying rate and total drying time of board to dry to 6.5% moisture content were 0.64%/hr and 109hr., and those of dimension lumber to dry to 8.3% moisture content were 0.4%/hr. and 162hr., respectively. 2. The moisture content of shell and core decreased by equalizing treatment and increased by conditioning treatment both on board and dimension lumber. But the moisture gradient was lower after conditioning than after equalizing. 3. As the drying was proceeded, the transverse bound water diffusion coefficient all but linearly decreased, the water vapor diffusion coefficient abruptly curvilinearly increased, while the transverse diffusion coefficient curvilinearly decreased both on board and dimension lumber. But each of diffusion coefficients on board was larger than that on dimension lumber. 4. Compared to experimential drying rate of board. theoretical drying rate was larger at 30.0%-21.8% moisture content range and was similiar at 21.8%-5.4% moisture content. And in case of dimension lumber, the drying rate was similiar at 30.0%-16.1% moisture content range but theoretical drying rate was much lower at 16.1%-8.3% moisture content range. 5. The possibility of adapting this drying model to changing the moisture content schedule step with time was in the range of 21.8%-5.4% moisture content on board. And in the case of dimension lumber that was in the range of 30.0%-16.1% moisture content.

Characteristics of Carbonized Biomass Produced in a Manufacturing Process of Wood Charcoal Briquettes Using an Open Hearth Kiln (평로탄화로를 이용한 성형목탄 제조공정에서 생산된 탄화 바이오매스의 특성)

  • Characteristics of carbonized biomass obtained from a Wood charcoal briquette manufacturing process using an open hearth kiln are analyzed in this research, and differences in the characteristics based on the results of a mechanical screening process and the position within the kiln. One type of biomass and five types of carbonized biomass were collected from a Wood charcoal briquette manufacturer. After screening and grinding processes were performed on samples of 1 type of biomass and 5 types of carbonized biomass extracted from a Wood charcoal briquettes manufacturer to classify by particle size, fixed carbon, ash, volatile matters, elemental composition, and high heating value (HHV) were measured. Experimental results showed that the carbonized biomass collected from the middle layer had the highest HHV, 20.4 MJ/kg, and therefore had the highest fuel quality. In terms of particle size, the carbonized biomass below 100 mesh had the lowest ash content and the highest HHV, carbon content, and fixed carbon content. Correlation analyses showed that ash content had negative correlations with HHV, volatile matters, fixed carbon, and carbon content, which suggested that ash content affected negatively on fuel quality.
