  • Various kinds of thermal conductive ceramic/polymer composites (aluminum nitride, aluminum oxide, boron nitride, and silicon carbide/epoxy) were prepared by a casting method and their optical images were observed by FE-SEM. Among these, SiC/epoxy composite shows inhomogeneous dispersion features of SiC and air voids in the epoxy matrix layer, resulting in undesirable thermal conductive properties. To enhance the thermal conductivities of SiC/epoxy composites, the epoxy wetting method which can directly infiltrate the epoxy droplet onto filtrated SiC cake was employed to fabricate the homogeneously dispersed SiC/epoxy composite for ideal thermal conductive behavior, with maximum thermal conductivity of 3.85W/mK at 70 wt% of SiC filler contents.

  • Porous self-bonded silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics were fabricated at temperatures ranging from 1750 to $1850^{\circ}C$ using SiC, silicon (Si), and carbon (C) powders as starting materials. The effect of the Si:C ratio on porosity and strength was investigated as a function of sintering temperature. It was possible to produce self-bonded SiC ceramics with porosities ranging from 36% to 43%. The porous ceramics showed a maximal porosity when the Si:C ratio was 2:1 regardless of the sintering temperature. In contrast, the maximum strength was obtained when the ratio was 5:1.

  • Porous self-bonded silicon carbide (SBSC) ceramics were fabricated at temperatures ranging from 1700 to $1850^{\circ}C$ using SiC, silicon (Si), and three different carbon (C) sources, including carbon black, phenol resin, and xylene. The effects of the Si:C ratio and carbon source on porosity and strength were investigated as a function of sintering temperature. Porous SBSC ceramics fabricated from phenol resin showed higher porosity than the others. In contrast, porous SBSC ceramics fabricated from carbon black showed better strength than the others. Regardless of the carbon source, the porosity increased with decreasing the Si:C ratio whereas the strength increased with increasing the Si:C ratio.

  • Effect of austenitizing temperatures on the impact value of the AISI 4140 steel after repetition of spheroidization and cold deep drawing treatment has been studied. Sufficient dissolution of carbide was shown after austenitizing at the high temperature of $950^{\circ}C$. Accordingly, the impact value was remarkably increased by tempering of this high temperature austenitized steel at the tempering temperature ranges between $570^{\circ}C$ and $630^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, remarkable decrease in the impact values and elongations were shown by tempering the low temperature-austenitized ($870^{\circ}C$) steel due to the coarsening of undissolved-carbide existed at the austenitizing temperature.

  • For the purpose of investigating the effect of austenitizing temperatures on the mechanical properties of 0.23% C-13.6%Cr martensitic stainless steel, tensile properties, hardness, impact value and carbide extraction were examined after changing the austenitizing temperatures and tempering temperatures. The results obtained are summerized as follows. The carbide laminations formed from hot rolling before austenitization could not be eliminated after austenitizing at $950^{\circ}C$. With increasing austenitizing temperature, hardness increased and showed maximum value at $1050^{\circ}C$ and then slightly decreased. With increasing tempering temperature up to $500^{\circ}C$, impact value and elongation appeard to be decreased but hardness showed nearly unchanged at austenitizing temperature of $1150^{\circ}C$ due to the fine $M_7C_3$ carbides precipitation. The abrupt increase in impact value, hardness and elongation above the tempering temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ appeared to change in carbide structure from fine $M_7C_3$ to coarse $M_{23}C_6$.

  • Molybdenum silicide has gained interest for high temperature structural applications. However, poor fracture toughness at room temperatures and low creep resistance at elevated temperatures have hindered its practical applications. This study uses a novel powder metallurgical approach applied to uniformly mixed molybdenum silicide-based composites with silicon carbide. The degree of powder mixing with different ball milling time is also demonstrated by Voronoi diagrams. Core-shell composite powder with Mo nanoparticles as the shell and ${\beta}-SiC$ as the core is prepared via chemical vapor transport. Using this prepared core-shell composite powder, the molybdenum silicide-based composites with uniformly dispersed ${\beta}-SiC$ are fabricated using pressureless sintering. The relative density of the specimens sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$ for 10 h is 97.1%, which is similar to pressure sintering owing to improved sinterability using Mo nanoparticles.

  • Porous self-bonded silicon carbide (SBSC) ceramics were fabricated at temperatures ranging from 1750 to $1850^{\circ}C$ using SiC, Si, C as starting materials and Al as an optional sintering additive. The effect of Al addition on the porosity and strength of the porous SBSC ceramics were investigated as functions of sintering temperature and Si:C ratio. The porosity increased with decreasing the Si:C ratio and increasing the sintering temperature. It was possible to fabricate SBSC ceramics with porosities ranging from 37% to 44% by adjusting the Si:C ratio and the sintering temperature. Addition of Al additive promoted densification and necking between SiC grains, resulting in improved strength. Typical flexural strengths of SBSC ceramics with and without Al addition were 44 MPa and 34MPa, respectively.

  • Macroporous silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics were fabricated by powder processing and polymer processing using carbon-filled polysiloxane as a precursor. The effects of the starting SiC polytype, template type, and template content on porosity and flexural strength of macroporous SiC ceramics were investigated. The ${\beta}$-SiC powder as a starting material or a filler led to higher porosity than ${\alpha}$-SiC powder, owing to the impingement of growing ${\alpha}$-SiC grains, which were transformed from ${\beta}$-SiC during sintering. Typical flexural strength of powder-processed macroporous SiC ceramics fabricated from ${\alpha}$-SiC starting powder and polymer microbeads was 127 MPa at 29% porosity. In contrast, that of polymer-processed macroporous SiC ceramics fabricated from carbon-filled polysiloxane, ${\beta}$-SiC fillers, and hollow microspheres was 116MPa at 29% porosity. The combination of ${\alpha}$-SiC starting powder and a fairly large amount (10 wt%) of $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ additives led to macroporous SiC ceramics with excellent flexural strength.

  • An optical lens is usually produced in the manner of high temperature compression molding with tungsten carbide alloy molding cores, it is necessary to develop and study technology for super-precision processing of molding cores and coating the core surface. As main methods used in surface improvement technologies using thin film, DLC present high hardness, chemical stability, and outstanding durability of abrasion to be extensively applied in various industrial fields. In this study, the effect of DLC coating of a thin film by means of the FVAS (filtered vacuum arc source) analyzed the characteristics of thin film. Surface roughness before and after DLC coating was measured and the result showed that the surface roughness was improved after coating as compared to before coating. In conclusion, it was observed that DLC coating of the ultra hard alloy core surface for molding had an effect on improving the surface roughness and shape of the core surface. It is considered that this will have an effect on improving abrasion resistance and the service life of the core surface.

  • Boron carbide coating has some very attractive properties for nuclear and semiconductor industry. The potential of atmosheric plasma spray as manufacturing methods for $B_4C$ coating was discussed. In this work, the boron carbide coating with low porosity, high microhardness and good life of thermal shock resistance was deposited by the control of spraying distance. The relationship between the properties of $B_4C$ coatings and their spraying distance was studied.
