The Journey of Benedictus Polonus or a European Discovery of Asia before Marco Polo

  • This article presents a brief reconstruction of the historic journey of Benedict the Pole and John of Pian de Carpine, the first known Europeans after A.D. 900 who completed a successful return journey east of Baghdad and gave surviving accounts of their travels. The article, which focuses mainly on the role of Benedict the Pole, is divided into five parts: the reasons and organization of the deputation sent to the Mongols by Pope Innocent IV from 1245-1248, the route travelled by the Papal envoys, the existing versions of the two surviving accounts of the mission, the role of Benedict the Pole as the secretary and translator to the papal legate Pian de Carpine, and the outcome of the journey as seen from the perspective of Europe-Asia contacts.

The Hero's Journey of Animation from the Spatial Map Model (애니메이션 영웅서사의 공간지도 연구)

  • This study defined the animation space as the concept of map based on the space of Joseph Campbell's heroic narrative. The space in which the animated character exists is an image symbolic language that reflects the inner and outer growth stages of the hero. I focused on the spatiality that plays the role of the power to lead the narrative and examined the meaning as the mediator that leads the heroic narrative. First, 6 spatial variables were derived by observing 'Hero's Journey 'which is used as a basis of US commercial animation scenario. Second, spatial variables are defined as 64 zones and proposed as 'Spatial Map Model of the Hero's Journey' (SMMH). Third, the character space of was applied to 'SMMH', and the change of space utilization rate and spatiality and the narrative meaning were analyzed. This study extended the narrative of animation space which was not actively studied to map concept. It is possible to provide a different viewpoint in animation production and research.

  • The purpose of this study is was to analyze customer experience attribute of professional baseball. To achieve objectives of this study, a method was used the in-depth interview and experts' consultation which understanding the attributes and structure of customer experience attribute of professional baseball. As a result, the professional baseball customer experience attributes are 'viewing plan & purchase', 'stadium movement', 'entrance stadium', 'move to seat', 'game viewing', 'amenities/services', 'events/cheering', 'move after match'. The review of the experience section and attributes derived through in-depth interviews with professional baseball fans was verified through an expert' consultation to secure content validity. Through this process, 8 experience section and 41 attributes were analyzed. The customer experience journey was analyzed for a more in-depth analysis of the viewing experience of professional baseball fans. The customer experience journey was presented based on the needs of fans and discomfort in each experience section activity.

  • The perspectives of customers and providers as for the services have the same objective; however, perspectives and objective are distinctly different. But the existing methodologies have mostly pondered only based on the customer-centric perspective or separately from the perspective of providers. It would be necessary to take these two perspectives as a whole by combining them into one perspective since they not only have differences but also common points. Therefore, in this study suggested the System Journey Map in terms of internal staff based on the customer's task in service. System Journey Map is consists of four parts : a customer journey map, thus the performance of internal staff, internal staff satisfaction evaluation, and finally the performance of internal staff assessment of the senior staff. After releasing a service, with customers and internal staff made a point of contact to identify specific behavioral patterns and whether any part of the problem so that this toolkit gives us an expectation to be a useful map, which is the intangible being placed in service, not just visualize and understand for identifying problems.

  • Recently, grafting of a story into a game has attracted ever increasing attention. In this study, the 12 phases of Hero's Journey by Joseph Campbell highlighted in movies and myths was analysed from a point of Christoper Vogler to be correlated with a game. Since a story-teller Is a player in a game, the story experienced by the player enjoying the game was examined and correlated with the 12 phases of Campbell. As the game, a construction/management simulation game, RCT3 produced by Atari was studied. The 12 phases of Campbell was applicable to game story.

  • Edward Abbey is regarded as one of the most influential ecological or nature writers. He celebrates the American Southwestern desert, argues for wilderness preservation, and advocates politically-oriented environmental activism to defend wilderness. He, however, does not classify himself as a nature writer, but rather places himself in the tradition of a kind of autography. His books show his fascination with the delicate harmony of the desert, and at the same time his personal journey over the desert. That is, eco-centered, he keeps his journey into the heart of the desert. He finds the desert harsh, brutal, fatal, and most of all, indifferent. The desert reveals simplicity and mystery, silence and revelation, and emptiness and fulfillment. This mythical and paradoxical essence of the desert draws him into the place and inspires redemptive humility and beauty, which, in turn, peel off his old ego or self. During his journey, Abbey tries to immerge himself with the desert yet remains intact and individual. The desert serves for him as the bedrock which sustains him and offers an opportunity to gain a new whole perspective. Like a pocket hunter in the desert whom he characterizes himself, he sticks to the desert to dig out ground for his existence and survival. Pulling the energy and force of the desert into his soul, Abbey is free, or compelled to contemplate what is beyond the human. His experience in and of the desert leads to a discovery of self and initiates selfhood.

A Comparative Study on the Commuting Regional Type According to the Features of Foreigner Commuting (외국인 통근 특성에 따른 지역 유형별 비교 연구)

  • The purposes of this study are to identify many implications of commuting regional type according to the features of foreigner commuting. Research on the pattern of distribution of foreigners has been very simple and limited because foreigners usually lived together in a specific area, and their workplace often tended to be their residence. However they currently live dispersed more Widely, and their job and housing increasingly tend to be mismatched. This study divided areas inhabited by foreigners into general one characterized by job-housing match and exceptional one characterized by job-housing mismatch, and then examined the features of foreigner commuting. General commute type showed a high rate of intra area commute and foreign workers' universal features. Inflow commute type showing high E/R ratio. In these areas, outflow commuters had a short journey to work while inflow commuters had relatively a long journey to work, and professionals accounted for a high proportion of employees. Outflow commute type showing low E/R ratio. In these areas, outflow commuters had a long journey to work while inflow commuters had a relatively short journey to work. The composition ratio of three commute types was different according to nationality and visa type.

Uniqueness of an Optimal Run-up for a Steep Incline of a Train

  • An optimal driving strategy of a train in a long journey on a nonsteep track has four phases: an initial power phase, a long hold speed phase, a coast phase and a final brake phase. The majority of the journey is speed holding. On a track with steep gradients, it becomes necessary to vary the strategy around steep sections of track because it is not possible to hold a constant steep on steep track. Instead we must interrupt the speed hold phase with a power phase. The aim of this paper is to show that there is a unique power phase that satisfies the necessary conditions for an optimal journey. The problem is developed and solved for various cases, from a simple single steep gradient to a complicated multiple steep gradient section. For each case, we construct a set of new conditions for optimality of the power phase that minimises the energy used during the power phase subject to a weighted time penalty. We then use the new necessary conditions to develop a calculate scheme for finding an optimal power phase for a steep incline. We also present an example to confirm the uniqueness of an optimal power phase.

The Cultural Differences between Eastern and Western Epics through the Comparison of Satan in Paradise Lost and Monkey King in the Journey to the West

  • This study tries to evaluate the similarities and differences between Paradise Lost and the Journey to the West through the characteristics of Satan and Monkey King. In Paradise Lost, the spirit of Satan revolts God is just like the spirit of Bourgeois revolts the Feudal Aristocracy; however, Monkey King's figure in the Journey to the West is a character with rebellious spirits. In the western world, they often advocate punishments afterward, while the eastern world notes social orders and rules. Although eastern epics have distinct differences toward western epics due to the different cultural and historical backgrounds, the results that the winners at the end always get supreme powers are the same.

  • With the development of Information Technology, customers require promptly higher quality products and services. Companies try to make newly digital marketing strategies, but there are no empirical researches on them. This article empirically presents a new perspective that companies can shape the customer decision journey ahead by coordinating customer experience. In this article, based on Elaborated Likelihood Model (ELM) theory, customer experience consists of the emotional or cognitive experience. We surveyed about 200 subjects (N = 217) in their 20s and 30s based on the International Music Industry Association's Music Listening 2019 report, then analyzed four different models (before personalization-cognitive experience, before personalization-emotional experience, after personalization- cognitive experience, after personalization-emotional experience) by JASP and R Studio. We conducted Structural Equation Model (SEM) and paired t-test. Personalization factors are about recommendation systems in Spotify. The results of survey represent that companies can shape the Customer Decision Journey (CDJ) ahead especially through enhance cognitive experience. It empirically proves Elaborated Likelihood Model (ELM). The conclusion can be drawn that 'pulling' customer experience can be a new marketing strategies in the digital era.
