  • The goal of this study is to analysis natural frequency for different static postures of human leg. To perform this research human leg is modeled by multi-body modeling for the musculoskeletal system. This leg model has biarticular muscles which acting on two joints and the muscles represents some of the major muscles, such as hamstring, of the upper and lower limbs. To obtain each static equilibrium position energy method is employed and to analysis natural frequency linearization method for constrained mechanical system is employed. Static equilibrium position depends on some parameter or condition such as hamstring stiffness or external force. Making a change these parameter the aim of this research can be performed.

  • The neighbouring gaps at the mortise-tenon joint in traditional timber structure, which leads to the complexity of the joint, are considered to impair the mechanical performance of the joint. In this paper, numerical simulation of loose joint was conducted to examine the deformation states, stress distributions, and bearing capacities, which was verified by full-scale test. On the basis of the experimental and numerical results, a simplified mechanics model with gaps has been proposed to present the bending capacity of the loose joint. Besides, the gap effects and parameter studies on the influences of tenon height, friction coefficient, elastic modulus and axial load were also investigated. As a result, the estimated relationship between moment and rotation angle of loose joint showed the agreement with the numerical results, demonstrating validity of the proposed model; The bending bearing capacity and rotational stiffness of loose joint had a certain drop with the increasing of gaps; and the tenon height may be the most important factor affecting the mechanical behaviors of the joint when it is subjected to repeated load; Research results can provide important references on the condition assessments of the existing mortise-tenon joint.

  • Occupant injury in rear end impact is rapidly becoming one of the most aggravating traffic safety problems with high human suffering and societal costs. Although rear end impact occurs at relatively low speed , it may cause permanent disability due to neck injuries resulting from an abrupt moment, shear force , and tension/compression force at the occipital condyles. The analysis is performed for a combined occupant-eat model response, using the SAFE(Safety Analysis for occupant crash Environment) computer program. The computational results are verified by those from sled tests. A parameter study is conducted for many physical and mechanical properties. Seat design has been performed based on the design of experiment process with respect to five parameters; seat-back upholstery stiffness, torsional stiffness of the seat-back. An orthogonal array is selected from the parameter study. A good design has been found from the analysis results based on the orthogonal array. The results show that reductions of stiffness in seat-back upholstery and joint are the most effective for preventing neck injuries.

  • Tubular joints have been widely used in offshore platforms and space structures due to their merits such as easy fabrication, aesthetic appearance and better static strength. For existing tubular joints, a grouted sleeve reinforced method was proposed in this paper. Experimental tests on five tubular T-joints reinforced with the grouted sleeve and two conventional tubular T-joints were conducted to investigate their mechanical behaviour. A constant axial compressive force was applied to the chord end to simulate the compressive state of the chord member during the tests. Then an axial compressive force was applied to the top end of the brace member until the collapse of the joint specimens occurred. The parameters investigated herein were the grout thickness, the sleeve length coefficient and the sleeve construction method. The failure mode, ultimate load, initial stiffness and deformability of these joint specimens were discussed. It was found that: (1) The grouted sleeve could change the failure mode of tubular T-joints. (2) The grouted sleeve was observed to provide strength enhancement up to 154.3%~172.7% for the corresponding un-reinforced joint. (3) The initial stiffness and deformability were also greatly improved by the grouted sleeve. (4) The sleeve length coefficient was a key parameter for the improved effect of the grouted sleeve reinforced method.

  • A method of identifying structural parameters such as stiffness and damping coefficients at interfacial points of vibro-acoustic systems is suggested using an optimization technique. To identify the parameters using a numerical optimization algorithm, cost functions are defined. The cost function should be zero at the correct parameter values. To minimize the cost functions using an optimization technique, a design sensitivity analysis procedure is developed in the framework of the multi-domain FRF-based substructuring method. As a numerical example, a ladder-like structure problem is introduced. With known parameter values and different initial guesses of the parameters, convergence characteristics to the exact value are compared f3r the three cost functions. Investigating the contours of the cost functions, we find the first cost function has the largest convergent region to the correct value. As another practical problem, stiffnesses of engine mounts and bushings in a passenger car are identified. The numerical examples show that the proposed method is efficient and accurate far realistic problems.

  • This paper is concerned with a combination of experimental and analytical investigation aimed at identifying modeling errors, accounted for the lack of correlation between experimental measurements and analytical predictions of the modal parameters for lap joint panels. A nonlinearity vibration test methodology, initiated from the theoretical analysis, is suggested for measurements of dynamic stiffnesses in a lap joint using the rivet fastener. Based on the experimental evidence on discrepancies between measured and predicted frequencies, improved finite element models of the joint are developed using PATRAN and ABAQUS, in which the beam element size is evaluated from the joint stiffnesses readily determined in the test. The beam element diameter as a principal design parameter is tuned to match experimental results within the evaluated bound value. Frequencies predicted by the proposed numerical model are compared with frequencies measured by the test. Improved predictions based on this new model are observed when compared with those based on conventional modeling practices.

  • Column foot in traditional Chinese timber structures may be subjected to be uplifted due to the lateral load and subsequently reset under the vertical loads. The residual moment of the rocking column foot is the most important parameter representing the mechanical behaviors of column foot, and the simplification of joints is the basis of structural analysis of whole structure. The complicated mechanical behaviors of joint and the modeling of the column foot joint has been undertaken historically based on the experiments and numerical simulation. On the condition of limited application range of those models, a lack of simplified model to represent the mechanical behaviors of joint deserves attentions. There is a great need to undertake theoretical studies to derive the residual moment and make better simplified model of the joint. This paper proposes the residual moment and equivalent simplified model of the rotational stiffness for column foot joint. And, the timber frame is established based on the simplified model, which is verified by solid finite element model. Results show that a mutual agreement on the mechanical behaviors of the timber frame is obtained between the simplified model and the solid finite element model. This study can serve as the references of the structural analysis for the traditional timber structures.

  • In this study, laboratory direct shear tests on 37 core specimens of gneiss were performed to examine the characteristics of shear behavior on fractures by using a portable direct shear box. The multi-stage shear testing method was used and normal stress applied to specimens ranges from 5.60 to $25.67kg/\textrm{cm}^2$. On the basis of test results, the empirical equations for the shear strength on fractures were suggested. The methanical parameters that can influence the shear behavior were derived and compared between each parameter. The values of shear stiffness have a trend showing rapid increase with the increase of normal stress and joint roughness coeffident, and the average value of secant shear stiffness for all specimens is about $110.68kg/\textrm{cm}^3$ under the range of normal stress applied in this test In addition, the relationship between the length of specimen and shear stiffness is inversely correlated due to the size effect. Therefore, even the specimens with the same joint roughness coeffident show the trend of decreasing shear stiffness in case of the specimens being the longer length.
