The author compared patients showing two extremes of incisor vertical relationship to find out differences in craniofacial morphology which might influence face height and incisor overbite. The subjects consisted of 53 open-bite cases and the same number of deep-bite cases. The results were as follows: 1. On the average, the lower face height was significantly greater in open-bite cases than in deep-bite cases. 2. In open-bite cases, gonin-menton length was significantly greater than in deep-bite cases. In deep-bite cases, anterior cranial base length and posterior cranial base length were significantly greater in open-bite cases. 3. The jaw angle was significantly greater in open-bite cases. 4. The gonion-menton-nasion angle was significantly greater in deep-bite cases. 5. From geometric standpoint, the increase of jaw and joint angle would increase lower face height, but these two showed negative correlation. 6. The sizes of the jaw and joint angle might be factors of open-bite or deep-bite, but these were not the only variables that determined lower face height. 7. In open-bite cases, there was a closer correlationship between lower face height and the other linear measurments than in deep-bite cases. In deep-bite cases, there was a closer correlationship between lower face height and the other angular measurements than in open-bite cases. 8. Considering both linear and angular measurements of facial polygon, all contributed significantly to the lower face height. The nonsignificant variables were jaw and joint angle in open-bite cases, and anterior cranial base length, jaw angle, and joint angle in deep-bite cases.
With the increase of the skyscraper center, the development of large-diameter and high-strength reinforcing bars is being carried out to solve the dense reinforcement. In case of the steel reinforced concrete with a small cross section such as beam-column joints, the development length becomes short when straight bars are used. Therefore, it is possible to solve the problem that the development length becomes short by using the bearing strength of the hooked bar and headed bar. In this study, the exterior beam-column joint test of SD700 hooked bar and headed bar with anchorage length of 20db was conducted to extend the development length limitation of hooked bar and headed bar. As a result of the evaluation of the anchorage strength using the design equation by KCI, the average of the [measured value]/[predicted value] ratio was 1.31 for the hooked reinforcing bars. In the case of headed bars, the average of the [measured value]/[predicted value] ratio was 1.12. In addition, in order to compare the anchorage performance of the hooked bar and the headed bar, the measured values were divided by the square root of the compressive strength of the concrete to compare the anchorage strength. Under the same conditions, the anchorage strength of headed bars was 8.5% higher than the hooked bars.
The midtarsal joint is composed of the talonavicular and calcaneocuboid joints. It is also known as the Chopart joint. Midtarsal joint fracture and dislocation are relatively rare and frequently missed or misdiagnosed. A proper understanding about the anatomy of the midtarsal joint is an essential part in comprehending the mechanism of injury and rationale for treatment. Anatomical reduction of midtarsal joint with correction of the column in length and shape are important; however, it is technically challenging and may require open procedure. Herein, we described a case of initial open reduction and internal fixation for midtarsal joint fracture and dislocation with a brief literature review.

In this study, a safe, economic, and rapid construction method of underground roadway using PSC girder is developed to reduce traffic congestion and maximize space usage in urban area. For an efficient application of the method, a rigid joint connection is proposed and tested. For the testing, cantilever specimens were used to verify its capacity. The parameters for this study were cross beam length and joint connection type. The results of the test showed that the proposed connection system has superior performances. Despite having differences of cross beam length and joint connection type, the stable flexural behavior was shown in all of the tested specimens. Also, the behaviors of PSC girders and upper slabs connected by the proposed method showed superior performance. Moreover, the improvement of structure performance according to the increase of length of cross beams has been verified.

The behavior of composite piles composed of steel pipe pile in the upper part and concrete pile in the lower part by a mechanical splicing joint was examined by field lateral load tests and bending tests. A total of 7 piles including two instrumented piles for bending test were installed. The soil profile consists of soft clay with weak silt with shallow groundwater level. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the basic soil characteristics and the strength parameters. This paper presents the composite pile behavior with various portions of the upper steel pile: 0, 20, 30, and 45% of the pile embedded pile length. Three-point bending tests were performed to investigate the stress-strain relation at the mechanical joint. Based on these test results, the behavior of composite piles with various upper steel pile length are evaluated and the stability of mechanical joints are examined. Through comparisons with results of field load tests, it was found that lateral load carrying capacity of the composite piles increased and deflections of the composite piles decreased with increasing the upper steel piles. The mechanical joint was proved to retain its structural stability against the tested load conditions. Economical benefits of composite pile of this kind can be gained by setting adequately the length of the upper steel pipe piles.

PURPOSE: This study examined the dynamic range of motion (ROM) of the hip, knee, and ankle joint when wearing different shoe sole lifts, as well as the limb asymmetry of the range according to the leg length discrepancy (LLD) during normal speed walking. METHODS: The participants were 40 healthy adults. A motion analysis system was used to collect kinematic ROM data. The participants had 40 markers attached to their lower extremities and were asked to walk on a 6 m walkway, under three different shoe lift conditions (without an insole, 1 cm insole, and 2 cm insole). Visual3D professional software was used to coordinate kinematic ROM data. RESULTS: Most of the ROM variables of the short limbs were similar under each insole lift condition (p>.05). In contrast, when wearing a shoe with a 2 cm insole lift, the long limbs showed significant increases in flexion and extension of the knee joint as well as; plantarflexion, dorsiflexion, pronation, eversion, and inversion of the ankle joint (p<.05). Of the shoes with the insole lifts, significant differences in all ROM variables were observed between the left and right knees, except for the knee internal rotation (p<.05). CONCLUSION: As the insole lift was increased, more ROM differences were observed between the left and right limbs, and the asymmetry of the bilateral lower limbs increased. Therefore, appropriate interventions for LLD are needed because an artificial mild LLD of less than 2.0 cm could lead to a range of musculoskeletal problems of the lower extremities, such as knee and ankle osteoarthritis.
The comparison of the numerical results with those measured by the experiment showed good agreement. The design of composite joint which is the weakest part in the composite structures has become a very important research area since the composite materials are widely used in the aircraft and machine structure. In this paper, the new composite key joints that minimize the fiber discontinuity and strength degradation of adherend were proposed and their failure loads were evaluated. The failure index and damage area method were used for the failure prediction of the composite key joint. From the tests, the failure load of the composite key joint was 93% larger than that of a mechanical joint and the key joint whose slot depth and edge length were 0.88mm and 20mm had the largest failure load. Also, the analytic failure modes by the failure index and damage area were compared with experimental failure modes.

This research reviewed the joint and duration characteristics depending on the surface treatment condition and lap spliced length in the PET film jointing method using the high hardness liquid material. As a result, the corona discharge treatment was improved to the contact angle, joint tensile strength, and joint peel resistance compared to non-treatment. Particularly, a surface treatment E (Corona discharge + Primer + PU bond + Polyester fabric) turned out to the best, and especially when the lap spliced length is longer than 15mm, stable joint performance was secured under the long term deterioration treatment of 16 weeks. Thus, the joint is considered to be applicable as the water-proof material.
The purpose of this study was to identify the immediate effect of the joint mobilization with an elastic taping on standing balance in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Thirty patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomly divided into three groups: a taping group, a joint mobilization group, and a joint mobilization with taping group. A foot pressure platform (Zebris) was used to evaluate standing balance ability, and the sway area, path length and average velocity were measured during eyes open condition and eyes closed condition. All the groups showed a significant improvement in the sway area during eyes closed condition after intervention, and the joint mobilization with taping group revealed significant improvements in the path length and average velocity. There was no significant difference in the standing balance ability among all the groups. Both the joint mobilization and taping method were effective methods for standing balance during eyes closed condition, and it has been found that the convergence of the two interventions had an effect on diverse balance variables. Thus, it is recommended to apply the convergence of the two interventions for patients with knee osteoarthritis.
This paper investigated computationally and experimentally the interaction here between a notch as well as a micropore under uniaxial compression. Brazilian tensile strength, uniaxial tensile strength, as well as biaxial tensile strength are used to calibrate PFC2d at first. Then, uniaxial compression test was conducted which they included internal notch and micro pore. Experimental and numerical building of 9 models including notch and micro pore were conducted. Model dimensions of models are 10 cm × 10 cm × 5 cm. Joint length was 2 cm. Joints angles were 30°, 45° and 60°. The position of micro pore for all joint angles was 2cm upper than top of the joint, 2 cm upper than middle of joint and 2 cm upper than the joint lower tip, discreetly. The numerical model's dimensions were 5.4 cm × 10.8 cm. The fractures were 2 cm in length and had angularities of 30, 45, and 60 degrees. The pore had a diameter of 1 cm and was located at the top of the notch, 2 cm above the top, 2 cm above the middle, and 2 cm above the bottom tip of the joint. The uniaxial compression strength of the model material was 10 MPa. The local damping ratio was 0.7. At 0.016 mm per second, it loaded. The results show that failure pattern affects uniaxial compressive strength whereas notch orientation and pore condition impact failure pattern. From the notch tips, a two-wing fracture spreads almost parallel to the usual load until it unites with the sample edge. Additionally, two wing fractures start at the hole. Both of these cracks join the sample edge and one of them joins the notch. The number of wing cracks increased as the joint angle rose. There aren't many AE effects in the early phases of loading, but they quickly build up until the applied stress reaches its maximum. Each stress decrease was also followed by several AE effects. By raising the joint angularities from 30° to 60°, uniaxial strength was reduced. The failure strengths in both the numerical simulation and the actual test are quite similar.
