To test the feasibility of using chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ fluorescence to assess the establishment success of seagrass transplants, photosynthetic characteristics of eelgrass Zostera marina transplants were measured using a Diving-pulsed amplitude modulation fluorometer in Jindong Bay on the southern coast of Korea. Maximum quantum yield ($F_v/F_m$), photosynthetic efficiency ($\alpha$), saturating irradiance ($E_k$) and maximum electron transport rate ($ETR_{max}$) of transplants and reference plants in a nearby transplant site were measured using the fluorometer for 5 months. Additionally, shoot morphology, individual shoot weight and productivity of transplants and reference plants were also monitored. Shoot height, leaf weight and productivity of transplants were significantly reduced during the first two or three months after transplantation compared to those of reference plants, and then increased to the levels of reference plants Characteristics of chlorophyll a fluorescence, including $F_v/F_m$, $\alpha$, $E_k$ and $ETR_{max}$ of transplants were also significantly reduced in the initial period, but recovered slightly sooner than shoot morphology or leaf productivity. These results indicated that after transplantation, Z. marina transplant photosynthesis recovered faster than shoot morphology, biomass or productivity. Thus, chlorophyll a fluorescence can be used as an indicator for early assessment of the status of eelgrass transplants without destructive sampling.

The effects of temperature, light, and salinity on the growth of Costaria costata and Undaria pinnatifida juveniles were examined in laboratory cultures. In a cultivation farm, the monthly yield and density were also investigated between December and April for C. costata and between December and March in 2007 and 2008 for U. pinnatifida. The relative growth rates (RGRs) were greater at $20{\sim}60\;{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$ than at low ($0{\sim}10\;{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$) and high ($100{\sim}180\;{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$) irradiance levels. The optimal growth conditions for the two species were $17^{\circ}C$, 35 psu, $60\;{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$, and a daylength of 12 h, indicating that C. costata and U. pinnatifida have very similar growth responses to temperature, light, and salinity. However, the growth responses of the two species to various environmental factors were different; C. costata grew faster than U. pinnatifida but the latter species grew well at low salinity. The monthly yield of C. costata and U. pinnatifida increased steadily over the study period, and it was maximal in March for both species, but the yield of U. pinnatifida was greater than that of C. costata.
In this study, the effects of an urban thermal environment on air quality were investigated using hourly surface weather observation data and air quality data over six summers from 2000 to 2005 in two cities on the Korean Peninsula. One, the city of Daegu, is representative of basin topography and the other, the city of Busan, represents a coastal area. It is known that the characteristics of an urban thermal environment are represented as an "urban heat island". Here, we focus on the nighttime urban thermal environment, which is called a "tropical night", during the summer. On tropical nights in Busan, the temperature and cloud cover levels were higher than on non-tropical nights. Wind speed did not appear to make a difference even on a tropical night. However, the frequency of southwestern winds from the sea was higher during tropical nights. The prevailing southwest winds in all areas meant an inflow of air from the sea. So at most of the air quality stations, the ozone concentration during tropical nights was lower than during non-tropical nights. In Daegu, the tropical nights had higher temperatures and cloud covers. Despite these higher temperatures, the ozone concentration during the tropical nights was lower than that on non-tropical nights at most of the air quality stations. This feature was caused by low irradiance, which in turn caused an increased cloud cover. Wind speed was stronger during the tropical nights and dispersed the air pollutants. These meteorological characteristics of the tropical nights reduced ozone concentrations in the Daegu Basin.
Induction of regeneration and maturation of the free-living gametophytes of Undariopsis peterseniana (Kjellman) Miyabe et Okamura was studied at four temperatures (5, 10, 15, and $20^{\circ}C$), four levels of irradiance (5, 10, 20, and 40 ${\mu}mol$$m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$) and three photoperiods (14:10, 12:12, and 10:14 h L:D). Female gametophyte fragments were maintained in active regeneration without reaching sexual maturity under conditions of $15^{\circ}C$, 20 ${\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$, 10:14 h (L:D), whereas the conditions for male gametophytes were slightly different at $15^{\circ}C$, 20 ${\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$, 14:10 h (L:D). The sexual maturation of female and male gametophytes took place under $15^{\circ}C$, 20 ${\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$, 14:10 h (L:D) and $10^{\circ}C$, 10 ${\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$, 10:14 h (L:D), respectively. These results provide basic information for controlling the regeneration and maturation of free-living gametophytes for artificial seed production of U. peterseniana.
Background: This study was aimed at evaluating the growth, yield, and carbohydrate content in the whole Allium hookeri plant with shading treatment in hot summer. Methods and Results: Different shading rate, including 0 (control), 35 or 55%, was employed from the June $21^{st}$ to August $31^{st}$. Daily average air and soil temperature, which were approximately $2.5^{\circ}C$ and $3.8^{\circ}C$ lower, respectively, were observed with both 35% and 55% treatments in July and August, with no significant difference in daily maximum air temperature. Dry weights were high, approximately 40% and 48% for the shoot and 20% and 12% for the root, with the 35% and 55% treatments, respectively, 8 weeks after shading. Division number was increased by 13% and 19.8% with the 35% and 55% treatments, respectively. The mortality rates of 150 plants were 9.1%, 4.0%, and 1.3% with the 0 (control), 35% and 55% treatments, respectively. At 4 weeks after shading, the highest and lowest sucrose levels in both shoot and root were observed with the 35% and 55% treatments, respectively. At 8 weeks after shading, there was no significant difference in the sucrose content in the shoot among the treatments. Conclusions: The highest plant growth rate and yield with the 55% treatment may be related with the decrease in both air and soil temperatures, resulting in reducted leaf respiration and thus compensate net photosynthesis.
Forages are the backbone of sustainable agriculture. They includes a wide variety of plant species ranging from grasses, such as tall fescue and bermudagrass, to herbaceous legumes, such as alfalfa and white clover. Abiotic stresses, especially salinity, drought, temperature extremes, high photon irradiance, and levels of inorganic solutes, are the limiting factors in the growth and productivity of major cultivated forage crops. Given the great complexity of forage species and the associated difficulties encountered in traditional breeding methods, the potential from molecular breeding in improving forage crops has been recognized. Plant engineering strategies for abiotic stress tolerance largely rely on the gene expression for enzymes involved in pathways leading to the synthesis of functional and structural metabolites, proteins that confer stress tolerance, or proteins in signaling and regulatory pathways. Genetic engineering allows researchers to control timing, tissue-specificity, and expression level for optimal function of the introduced genes. Thus, the use of either a constitutive or stress-inducible promoter may be useful in certain cases. In this review, we summarize the recent progress made towards the development of transgenic forage plants with improved tolerance to abiotic stresses.

Induction of regeneration and maturation of the free-living gametophytes of Saccharina japonica was studied at four temperatures (5, 10, 15 and $20^{\circ}C$), four levels of irradiance (5, 10, 20 and $40{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$) and three photoperiods (14 : 10, 12 : 12 and 10 : 14 h L : D). Female gametophyte fragments were maintained in active regeneration without reaching sexual maturity under conditions of $15^{\circ}C$, $20{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$, 10 : 14 h (L : D), whereas the conditions for male gametophytes were slightly different at $15^{\circ}C$, $5{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$, 14 : 10 h (L : D). The sexual maturation of female and male gametophytes took place under $5^{\circ}C$, $20{\sim}40{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$, 10 : 14 h (L : D) and $15^{\circ}C$, $40{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$, 10 : 14 h (L : D), respectively. These results provide basic information for controlling the regenerationand maturation of free-living gametophytes for strain improvement and cross breeding of S. japonica.
Outdoor cultural buildings and their accessories receive different amounts of solar radiation depending on their location's latitude, azimuth, and tilt. Shading is also affected by the surrounding terrain and objects, necessitating individual and quantitative shading analysis. In July 2019, this study conducted a shading analysis on the tops, midpoints, and bottoms of wooden pillars in the azimuth of Cheongpunggak, a traditional building in South Korea's National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage. The shading analysis found that the solar access/shade predicted by the solar trajectory meter was 30 minutes slower than measured in the field. The highest solar access and solar radiation levels came from the south, followed by the west, east, and north. The pillars' bases received the highest solar access and solar radiation, followed by their midpoints and tops. Solar access was high at tilt 90°, but solar radiation was high at tilt 0°, due to the light-collection efficiency and the irradiance. Shading on the pillars' tops was caused by the roof eaves, while shading on the midpoints and bases were affected by the surrounding pillars, topography, and other objects. Simultaneous solar access at the tops, midpoints, and bottoms was possible for 365 days for the northwest, west, and southwest pillars but only from October to March for the south and southeast pillars.

Benthic diatoms are very important primary producers in understanding estuary ecosystems and their productions are largely varied by their photo-physiological characteristics. The short-term effects of increased temperature on the photosynthetic and photo-physiological characteristics of cultured different species of benthic diatoms (Navicula sp., Nitzschia sp., Cylindrotheca closterium, and Pleurosigma elongatum) were investigated by measuring their PSII-fluorescence kinetics using a Diving-PAM. Photosynthesis versus irradiance curves were measured every two hours at six different temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and $35^{\circ}C$) for twenty-four hour. The effective quantum yield of PSII ($\Phi_{PSII}$) for most of the species showed a decreasing trend with increased temperature. The relative maximum electron transport rate (rETRmax) was significantly increased up to the optimum temperature level and then sharply decreased. Relative to the values of other parameters, the maximum light use coefficient ($\alpha$) was not substantially changed at lower temperature levels (<$30^{\circ}C$) but significantly decreased only at higher temperatures (30 and $35^{\circ}C$). The light saturation coefficient ($E_K$) mirrored the rETRmax temperature response. In regards to the temperature acclimation abilities of the four species with time, Navicula sp. and C. closterium acclimated to short-term changes in temperature through their photo-physiological adjustments.

Codonopsis lanceolata (S. et Z.) Trautv. is mainly cultivated in Korea and China as a medicinal crop. C. lanceolata is difficult to produce plug seedlings in the summer, because C. lanceolata has a low germination rate and is vulnerable to high temperatures. Cold treatment is effective in breaking dormancy of seeds and increasing the germination rate. Shading cultivation can control the solar irradiance received by plants and reduce the damage by high temperatures and strong light. This study was conducted to examine the appropriate cold treatment period for the improving germination of C. lanceolata, and shading level during the summer seedling period. Cold treatment experiments were conducted for 0 (control), 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks at 4℃ before sowing. In the shading experiment, C. lanceolata was grown for 45 days with 0 (non-treatment), 45, 75% shading levels. Cold treatment for one week significantly improved the germination energy. The plant height, leaf area, and fresh and dry weights of C. lanceolata seedlings were significantly increased under the 45% shading level. Total root length, root surface area, and the number of root tips were significantly higher in shading treatment (45 and 75%) than in non-treatment. The C. lanceolata seedling's compactness and Dickson's quality index were the highest at 45% shading level. Therefore, these results recommended sowing C. lanceolata after cold treatment for one week at 4℃, and 45% shading level could stably culture C. lanceolata plug seedlings during the high temperature period.
