  • A lipase from Pseudomonas cepacia was immobilized onto single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in two different ways in each of two solvent systems (buffer and ionic liquid). The most efficient immobilization was achieved in ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, BMIM-$BF_4$). In this procedure, carbon nanotubes were first functionalized noncovalently with 1-pyrenebutyric acid N-hydroxysuccinimide ester and then subject to the coupling reaction with the lipase in ionic liquid. The resulting immobilized enzyme displayed the highest activity in the transesterification of 1-phenylethyl alcohol in the presence of vinyl acetate in toluene.

  • In order to develope a clean technology by liquid-supported membrane of ionic liquid/PVDF, the solubility of R22 and HFP gases using BMIBF4 as ionic liquid were measured at temperatures from 0 to $30^{\circ}C$, at total pressures up to 4 bars. The solubility of R22 in this ionic liquid was shown a rapid increasing tendency with increases of pressure and decreases of temperature, respectively, whereas the solubility of HFP was showed only a little in the same conditions. Based on these results, liquid-supported membranes of ionic liquid/PVDF were prepared by variables of the deposition amount of ionic liquid in polymer matrix, PVDF and were applied to the separation of fluoro-gases(R22, HFP) including $N_2$ gas. The permeability of R22 was rapidly increased by depending on the deposition amounts of ionic liquid, whereas both of HFP and $N_2$ were just showed so little. Especially, the diffusivity coefficient and solubility parameter of R22 were increased by lower operating temperatures and increased deposition amount of ionic liquid in 1iquid membrane. In conclusion, the selectivity of R22 against HFP was changed to 10-45 times depending on both of operating temperatures and the deposition amount of ionic liquid in BMIBF4/PVDF liquid membrane.

  • The use of ionic liquids as reaction media can confer many advantages upon catalytic reactions over reactions in organic solvents. In ionic liquids, catalysts having polar or ionic character can easily be immobilized without additional structural modification and thus the ionic solutions containing the catalyst can easily be separated from the reagents and reaction products, and then, be reused. More interestingly, switching from an organic solvent to an ionic liquid often results in a significant improvement in catalytic performance (e.g., rate acceleration, (enantio)selectivity improvement and an increase in catalyst stability). In this review, some recent interesting results which can nicely demonstrate these positive “ionic liquid effect” on catalysis are discussed.

  • This study develops a novel method to remove the free cations created during the synthesis of ionic liquid. The cations are removed from the ionic liquid by size-selective adsorption onto chemically surface-modified Zeolite. The porous crystal nano-structure of Zeolite has several electron-rich Al sites to attract cations. While large cations of an ionic liquid cannot access the Zeolite nano-structure, small cations like $Na^+$ have ready access and are adsorbed. This study confirms that: $Na^+$ can be removed from ionic liquid effectively using Zeolite; and, in contrast to the conventional and extensively applied ion exchange resin method or solvent extraction methods, this can be done without changing the nature of the ionic liquid.

  • The ionic liquid-based sulfonated hydrocarbon composite membranes was prepared for use in anhydrous high temperature-polymer electrolyte fuel cells (HT-PEFCs). Ionic liquid behaves like water in the composite membranes under anhydrous condition. However the composite membranes show a low conductivity and high gas permeability as the content of ionic liquid increases due to its high viscosity and content of ionic liquid, respectively. Hence, in order to enhance the proton conductivity and to reduce the gas permeability of the composite membranes with low content of ionic liquids, the acid containing a common ion of ionic liquid was added to the composite membranes. The characterization of composite membranes was carried out using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and impedance spectroscopy. As a result, the composite membranes containing acid showed higher proton conductivity than those with no acid under the un-humidified condition due to a decrease in viscosity. In addition, the proton conductivity of composite membranes increased with increasing mole concentration of acid.

  • The encapsulation of volatile organic electrolytes is a major challenge in practical applications of the DSSC. Ionic liquid (IL) within polymer electrolytes is an attractive candidate for replacement. Here we used a low viscosity ionic liquid 1-ethyl 3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate in order to modify ionic conductivity (${\sigma}$) of polymer electrolyte ($PEO:Kl/l_{2}$) and hence DSSC efficiency. The doping of IL enhanced ${\sigma}$ and attained maximum (${\sigma}=7.62{\times}10^{-4}S/cm$) at 80 wt% of IL concentration. Beyond this it was harder to get stable films. XRD confirmed that the intensity of the sharp PEO crystalline peaks decreased when IL was added. The DSC studies confirmed the reduction in crystallinity by adding ionic liquid. The efficiency of solar cell using aforesaid material was 0.6 % at 1 sun irradiation.

  • We present the electrochemical performance of electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) assembled with pyrrolidinium (Pyr)-based ionic liquid electrolytes at 55 ℃. Cations with various alkyl chain lengths were employed in Pyr-based ionic liquids to investigate the effect of cation structure on the cycling stability of EDLCs. The EDLCs exhibited initial specific capacitances ranging from 122.4 to 131.6 F g−1 based on activated carbon material at 55 ℃. Cycling data and XPS results demonstrate that Pyr-based ionic liquid with longer alkyl chain is more effective for enhancing the cycling stability of EDLC by suppressing the reductive decomposition of pyrrolidinium cations during cycling at high temperatures.

  • This study first investigates the effect of the choice of cation on three different ionic-liquid-based gel polymer electrolytes (ILPEs) with polyimide membranes. The preparation of three ILPEs based on electrospun membranes of PI and incorporating a room-temperature ionic liquid, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide complexed with lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, is described. ILPE-EMImTFSI has an ionic conductivity as high as $5.3{\times}10^{-3}S\;cm^{-1}$ at $30^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, it shows higher thermal stability and electrochemical oxidation stability compared to the other two ILPEs because of its stronger bonds. These results indicate that polyimide-based ILPE-EMImTFSI is a good candidate for use in high-safety rechargeable lithium metal batteries.

  • Cellulosic biomass is a renewable source for biofuel production from non-edible biomass. An optimized pretreatment process is required for the efficient utilization of cellulosic biomass. Among various pretreatment processes, the use of ionic liquids has been reported recently. However, the residual ionic liquid after pretreatment acts as an inhibitor of microbial fermentation. Recently, we isolated mutant Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains resistant to the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM][Ac]) by using a directed evolutionary approach. When 3% [EMIM][Ac] was added to a medium containing 80 g/l of glucose, mutants D452-B2 and D452-S3 produced 35.6 g/l and 36.3 g/l of ethanol, respectively, for 18 h while the parental strain (S. cerevisiae D452-2) produced 1.3 g/l of ethanol. Thus, these mutant S. cerevisiae strains might prove advantageous when ionic liquids are used for biofuel production from cellulosic biomass.
