A total of 328 ambient PM-10 samples was collected by a PM-10 high volume air sampler during the periods of February 1997 to February 1999 from Kyung Hee University at Suwon Campus. The samples were analyzed for their bulk chemical compositions(Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn, Al, $Na^{+}$, $NH_{4}^{+}$, $K^{+}$, $Ca^{2+]$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Cl^{-}$, $NO_{3}^{-}$, and $SO_{4}^{2-}$ by both an atomic absorption spectrophotometer and an ion chromatograph. The purpose of this study was t develop a receptor methodology for quantitative assessment of PM-10 sources. The data obtained from this study were ex-tensively examined using the target transformation factor analysis(TTFA) and the chemical mass balance (CMB). When TTFA was initially applied seasonal basis. five sources(such as automobile-related, sulfate-related, incine-ration, soil and combustion-related) were identified both during winter and fall. Since the total number and the type of sources were resolved by TTFA for the four seasons, CMB was employed to cross-check the results of TTEA. The total of six source categories identified by TTEA was intensively investigated on the basis of source profiles acquired from various source libraries established both in Korea and abroad. The results of this study showed the applicability of two popular receptor models as a new methdology for quantitative assessment PM-10 sources in Korea. Seasonally segmented data sets with the combined application of TTFA and CMB yielded a physically reasonable source apportionment result and provided a mean to increase the number of potential sources. Furthermore, this study suggested the possibility of the CMB application to ambi-ent data from Korea after identifying potential sources through traditional factor analysis.
This study estimated the health risk of heavy metals in particulate matter $(PM)_{2.5}$ in a Gwangyang industrial complex. The $PM_{2.5}$ containing heavy metal was collected from January to November, 2008 using a denuder air sampler and by IC (Ion Chromatograph). The risk assessment was performed in a four-step process; hazard identification, exposure assessment, dose-response assessment and risk characterization. In the hazard identification process, $Cr^{6+}$, Ni, As, and Pb were categorized as human carcinogens and probable human carcinogens, while Ti, Mn, Se, P, $Cr^{3+}$, Cu, and Zn were not classified as human carcinogens. It was found that the excess cancer risk by Central Tendency Exposure (CTE) of $Cr^{6+}$ and As in $PM_{2.5}$ was > $10^{-6}$, and the total excess cancer risk posed by carcinogen heavy metals in $PM_{2.5}$ was > $10^{-6}$. It was also determined that the total hazard index by CTE of non-carcinogen heavy metals in $PM_{2.5}$ was <1. Taken together, these results indicate a high cancer risk associated whit inhalation of heavy metal-containing$PM_{2.5}$ in industrial areas.
It is well known that the salt in stoneworks impact on damage of stone by various methods. Various kind of salt is detected in high content in the black surface layer of stone monuments and it is required about origin and roles of salts on blackening to considerate. In this study have been investigated the characteristics of salt in the black crust of sandstone and limestone which used in historical monuments in Berlin, Germany. Salt was analyzed for cation by Atomic Absorption and Atomic Emission Spectroscopy and for anion by ion Chromatograph. The representative ions are $Ca^{2+}\;and\;SO_4^{-2}$ in all samples and the most obvious combinations was proved in calcium sulfate by statistical methods. Because gypsum was detected by X-ray diffraction analyses in the black crusts, this calcium sulfate was confirmed by 2 hydrate type. The probable origin of Ca is air particle in atmosphere around sandstone and calcite in mother rock in limestone, and that of S is polluted air and mortar which used as conservation works.

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a serious pathogen which causes yield loss in many dicotyledonous crops including potato. The objective of this study was to assess the potential of biofumigation using three Brassica crops including Brassica napus, B. juncea and B. campestris against potato stem rot caused by S. sclerotiorum by in vitro tests. Both macerated and irradiated dried tissues were able to reduce radial growth and sclerotia formation of five pathogen isolates on PDA, but macerated live tissues were more effective. Compared with other tested crops, B. juncea showed more inhibitory effect against the pathogen. The volatile compounds produced from macerated tissues were identified using a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. The main identified compounds were methyl, allyl and butyl isothiocyanates. Different concentrations of these compounds inhibited mycelial growth of the pathogen in vitro when applied as the vapor of pure chemicals. A negative relationship was observed between chemicals concentrations and growth inhibition percentage. In this study, it became clear that the tissues of local Brassica crops release glucosinolates and have a good potential to be used against the pathogen in field examinations.

RIE는 Power : 300 W, Flow rate : 30 sccm, Time : 15 min, Temperature : $15^{\circ}C$, Pressure : Open과 같은 조건으로 공정을 수행하였다.
This study was performed to investigate the manufacturing process of the Yeomcho(potassium nitrate), a necessary raw material for making gunpowder using soils and ashes by our ancestor. 10 types of soils including underfloor soil and 6 kinds of ashes including mugwort ash were collected, referencing the historical record. The ionic components extracted from the soils and ashes were analyzed by ICP(inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer) and IC(ion chromatograph). Nitrate ions and potassium ions were dominantly contained in soils and ashes, respectively. In particular, nitrate ions were found in the highest lebels in underfloor soil which often has much exposure to human living environments and accumulated fine organic matter. Potassium ions contained in ash was affected significantly by the type of plant and the growth environments and the measured levels were the highest in mugwort ashes. Yeomcho of 68% purity was obtained from the soil and ash mixture of 1:1 and thid purity was improved by about 14% by fractional crystallization method.

We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Giggenbach bottle method and develop the related pretreatment and analytical methods using artificial fumarolic gases. The artificial fumarolic gases were generated by mixing $CO_2$, CO, $H_2S$, $SO_2$, $H_2$, and $CH_4$ gas streams with a $N_2$ stream sparged through an acidic medium containing HCl and HF, with their compositions varied by adjusting the gas flow rates. The resultant fumarolic gases were collected into an evacuated bottle partially filled with a NaOH absorption solution. While non-condensible gases such as CO, $H_2S$, and $CH_4$ accumulated in the headspace of the bottle, acidic components including $CO_2$, $SO_2$, HCl, and HF that were dissolved into the alkaline solution. Like other acidic components, $H_2S$ also dissolved into the solution, but it reacted with dissolved $Cd^{2+}$ to precipitate as CdS when $Cd(CH_3COO)_2$ was added. The non-condensible gases were analyzed on a gas chromatography. Then, CdS precipitates were separated from the alkaline solution by filtration, and they were pretreated with $H_2O_2$ to oxidize CdS-bound sulfide into sulfate. In addition, a portion of the solution was also pretreated with $H_2O_2$ to oxidize sulfite to sulfate. Following the pretreatment, the resultant samples were analyzed for $SO_4^{2-}$, $Cl^-$ and $F^-$ on an ion chromatography. In the meanwhile, dissolved $CO_2$ was analyzed on a total organic carbon-inorganic carbon analyzer without such pretreatment. According to our experimental results, the measured concentrations of the fumarolic gases were shown to be proportional to the gas flow rates, indicating that the Giggenbach bottle method is adequate for monitoring volcanic gas. The pretreatment and analytical methods employed in this study may also enhance the accuracy and reproducibility of the Giggenbach bottle method.
Recently, it has been reported that some preservatives used in cosmetics lead to skin problems. Among the many cosmetic ingredients, 1, 2-hexanediol (HD) is used as both a preservative and humectant. In order to develop safer ingredients, we studied the synthesis of 1, 2-hexanediol galactoside (HD-G) by a transgalactosylation reaction using β-galactosidase (β-gal)-containing recombinant Escherichia coli cells. The transgalactosylation reaction was carried out under high-lactose conditions for 24 hr. After 12 hr had elapsed, a new spot was identified by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) analysis, and we presumptively designated this new spot as HD-G. Then, we carried out the purification of the presumptive HD-G spot from the reaction mixture by using silica gel chromatography, and its mass was measured by electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry. The purified new spot on the chromatograph was identified a sodium adduct ion ([M+Na]+, m/z = 303.1423) of HD-G. In addition, when purified HD-G was hydrolyzed using commercially available E. coli β-gal, it was observed that a galactose molecule was released from HD-G. That is, it was demonstrated that HD-G is a galactoside derivative of HD. Finally, we confirmed that HD-G was enzymatically synthesized by E. coli β -gal as a new molecular entity. In the future, we plan to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations of HD-G against different bacterial species. The cytotoxicity of HD-G against human skin cells will also be examined. It is expected hopefully that the galactosylation of HD would improve the functionality of HD-G.
This study was performed to compare international analytical methods of bromide and applied to determine bromide in bottled mineral water and raw ground water in Korea. Bromide in water was eluted by 10~50 mM potassium hydroxide (KOH) and determined by ion chromatography-suppressed conductivity detector (IC-CD). Sample was purified with Ba- and H-on-guard cartridge and $0.2\;{\mu}m$ membrane filter. The method detection limit (MDL) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) of bromide were 0.2 and $0.5\;{\mu}g/L$, respectively. The calibration curve showed good lineality above 0.9993 in the ranges of the $0.5\sim80\;{\mu}g/L$. A correlation coefficient of bromide in ground water and sum of bromide and bromate in bottled mineral water is 0.808.
An analytical method was developed for the determination of oxathiapiprolin in agricultural commodities. Oxathiapiprolin is a new oomycide (fungicide of piperidinyl thiazole isoxazoline class) which controls downy mildew in cucurbits caused by Pseudoperonospora cubensis (oomycete plant pathogen). Agricultural commodities were extracted with acetonitrile and partitioned with dichloromethane to remove the interference, adjusting pH between 9 and 10 by 1 N sodium hydroxide. After purification by silica SPE cartridge to clean up the interference of organic compounds, they were finally quantified by HPLC-UVD (high performance liquid chromatograph ultraviolet detector) using a wavelength at 260 nm and confirmed by LC-MS (liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer) in electro-spray ionization positive ion mode. The standard calibration curve was linear with coefficients of determination ($r^2$) 1.00 over the calibration ranges (0.025-2.5 mg/L). Recoveries were ranged between 86.7 to 112.7%, with relative standard deviations less than 10% at three concentration levels (LOQ, 10LOQ, and 50LOQ) performing five replicates. The overall results were determined and estimated according to the CODEX guidelines (CAC/GL40). The proposed method for determination of oxathiapiprolin residues in agricultural commodities can be used as an official method.
