  • A nuclear power plant requires a huge amount of initial investment and long construction lead time. As we expect that there may exist a relationship between investment and construction lead time, a number of researchers have reported that nearly a half of investments is incurred due to time factors such as the time value of money and inflation or escalation rates. Therefore, we investigated in this paper a relationship between the initial investment and the construction lead time of a nuclear power plant construction, and proposed a method for a trade-off analysis between the annual equivalent worth and the investment alternatives to reduce the construction lead time. Finally, we presented a real case to numerically explain the steps of the method presented in this paper.

  • Several mechanisms are introduced for the procurement of capacity adequacy. In the competitive electricity market, however, it is a GENCO that makes generation investment decision. A GENCO will invest a new generator when it can get more profit than cost. There requires a model to evaluate profit with respect to a new generation investment. In the view of long-term investment, evaluation of a profit of a generator in the electricity market is quite different from that of short-term operation. In this paper, a new profit-evaluation model is proposed for the long-term generation investment. It can treat the probabilistic characteristics of generators, ie, forced-outage-rates, which affect profit of generators.

  • This study found that introduction of environmental systems and increased environmental investment have a major impact on K company's sustainable development. The analysis indicated that the environmental investment variable has a close relationship with production quantity, sales, and the amount of sludge treatment variables in K company. However, all other variables including the cost of disinfection chemicals, and the expenditure of sludge treatment have no relationship with the environmental investment variable. Additionally, short-term results show that the company's environmental expenditure variable is conversely related with the environmental performance variable.

  • This study deals sith some problems of foreign direct investment and seeks for the ways of activating foreign direct investment (hereafter F.D.I.) by analyzing the Korean economic structure that is faced with the neo-protectivism and nationalism of the advanced or foreign countries currently. During a transformational process in the transitional period of world trade environment, it is necessary for Korea not only to learn the higher technology for advanced countries, but also to apply techonology to their economic structure in order to enter into competition with the advanced countries. Based on the experiences and accomplishments from their investments, Korean enterprises should turn their business into F.D.I. and act appropriately in order to keep the balance between indoor and outdoor investment. The Impact of Information Technology Investment on Cost Reduction in Korean Insurance Industry (한국 생명보험산업의 정보화투자와 비용절감)

  • Analyzing the effects of information technology(IT) in the life insurance Industry is important in establishing the direction for future information technology investment. In this research, the cost-elasticity of IT capital stock was measured by the SUR technique, using the second-order translog cost function, which was drawn out by a Taylor expansion of the multi-product joint cost function. Analysis was made based on data from 1991 to 2003 collected from 33 life insurance firms. The results show that although the effects of information technology investment vary according to individual life insurance firms, half of the life insurance firms surveyed reduced their costs by investing in information technology. The research also revealed that although large life insurance firms reduced their costs by investing in information technology medium & small life insurance firms and foreign ,life insurance firms increase their costs. Additionally, although both information capital and information labor increase as the information budget increases, the increase in information capital is larger than one in information labor. Because the price of information capital is decreased rapidly more than one of information-related labor.

  • In 1995 of May, the Ministry of Construction and Transportation (NOCT) developed the First Nation-wide Master Plan of GIS. It is set up in response to an increasing and various demands on spatial informations. Until now, a set of diverse projects related to spatial information have been proposed and executed. However, cost-benefit analysis of investment and decision making for alternatives have not been carried out appropriately because scientific evaluations for obtaining efficiency and economical validity of investment have been deficient. Optimum decision making for projects based on itemized priority order using effect or cost of proposed alternative plan is a fundamental expedient for demonstration of propriety of projects and enhancement of efficiency of investment. From such understanding, this paper applied the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) technique to the cost required to construct a GIS so that analyze the weight of each cost factor.

Economic Investigation of Small Scale Cogeneration System in a School Dormitory of Busan Region (부산지역 학교 기숙사에서의 소형열병합발전 시스템의 경제성 분석)

  • The cogeneration system can operate at efficiencies greater than those achieved when heat and power are produced in separate. The optimal system can be determined by selecting the auxiliary system combined with cogeneration system. In the present study, economic investigation has been conducted with the cogeneration electric heat pump(EHP) system and the cogeneration absorption chiller(AC) system to install in a school dormitory. To analyze life cycle cost(LCC), cost items such as initial investment costs, annual energy costs and maintenance costs of each system have been considered. The initial investment cost is referred to the basis of estimated costs, and annual energy costs such as the electric power and gas consumption are based on the data in a school dormitory. LCC is evaluated with the present worth method. Considering investigated results, the initial investment cost of the cogeneration EHP system is more profitable about 24% than that of the cogeneration AC system. The energy cost of the cogeneration EHP system is more profitable about 8% than the cogeneration AC system. The LCC shows that the cogeneration EHP system is the most effective system in the school dormitory.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a Cost-Benefit analysis system which would help us to make optimal decision among safety investment alternatives, calculating and comparing costs and benefits for facilities in chemical plants. So, the accident frequency analysis module and the accident damage prediction module were developed for estimating quantitative risks in chemical facilities, and domestic societal risk criterion was presented after the comparative analysis of major industrial cases and societal risk criteria of advanced countries like the Netherlands, Australia, U.S.A., U.K., and Germany. Also, the Cost-Benefit Analysis System which compares the safety investment alternatives based on their deduced net present values was developed through the selection of proper cost and benefit items by field studies

  • This study reviewed the current status and problems of sewerage system in Korea and then proposed possible methods to correct the problems. Also, evaluation of future development in sewerage system is included. It can be summarized as follows : 1. Investment in sewerage system is relatively low . 0.23% of GNP, Considering that the investment portion is 0.35% in OECD and 0.63% in Japan, it should be increased further. 2. The reasons wily the investment in sewerage system is low can be ' (1) Low priority is given to the investment in sewerage system. Local government builds and operates its own wastewater treatment plant. Local government as well as residents prefer to invest their money in roadwork, housing and parks to in wastewater treatment facilities because of greater investment effects. (2) Besides capital investment, more maintenance cost is needed for sewerage system. Proper operation of wastewater treatment facilities requires a well-trained operator. Because of public conception that operation of wastewater treatment facility is a dirty job, it is difficult to find a well-trained operator. (3) It is difficult to estimate the effect of sewerage system (4) Cost required to build and maintain wastewater treatment facility should be paid by people, who benefit from the facility. People to benefit are sometimes different from people to pay. 3. Advanced treatment is necessary to protect the bay aura and raw water source as well as to prevent eutrophication of lakes and ponds. 4. Wastewater treatment facility were mainly build in big cities during the decade of 1980. Followings should be solved first to expand the facilities. (1) Rapid repair and construction of sewer. (2) Technical development of wastewater treatment . Prevention of efficient and economical wastewater . Development of efficient and economical wastewater treatment techniques . Development of high-efficiency treatment using bioreactor . Reuse of wastewater treatment plant effluent (3) Sludge treatment and disposal . Composting of sludge cakes . Development of techniques to reduce the volume of sludge cake : incineration and reuse of sludge ash and slag. (4) Utilization of wastewater treatment facilities . Construction of community parks or sports families(ie, on the tops of the covered aeration tanks and sedimention tanks) Construction of wastewater treatment facilities under ground and of parking facilities and community parks above ground. (5) Education of wastewater treatment personal.

  • As the construction industry develops, environmental pollution gets increasingly serious, giving damage including the increase of incidence of respiratory diseases and skin diseases among children with weakened immune systems, rather than adults. In daycare centers, infants and children spending much of their time, have high frequency of contact with the interior floor finish material. However, the majority of the child care centers don not use eco-friendly flooring but ordinary monorium flooring, because the initial investment cost of the eco-friendly flooring is higher than ordinary monorium flooring. Therefore, in this study, life cycle costs including the initial investment cost of the eco-friendly flooring and ordinary monorium flooring were calculated, demonstrating that the eco-friendly flooring is more economical than ordinary monorium flooring in terms of life-cycle cost. In addition, the analysis of the environmental performance also showed the excellence of the eco-friendly floor finishes. It is expected that the use of the eco-friendly floor finishes will increase due to their excellence in the aspect of life cycle cost and eco-friendly performance, through this study.
