  • The paper proposes a well structured, component count waned single phase multilevel inverter (MLI) topology, which drives three different modules viz. Stipulation Based Sources Insertion (SBSI) module, Level Count Increasing (LCI) module and Inter-Linking H-Bridge (ILHB) module. The SBSI module confronts the number of basic sources needed in series/parallel to achieve required magnitude for any particular level. The LCI possesses an offsetting dc source and opuses to increase the number of levels and the ILHB module links the SBSI and LCI modules. A developed Hybrid Pulse Width Modulation (HPWM) strategy has PWM pulses for the switches of LCI module while the switches of the remaining two modules function at fundamental switching frequency. A fifteen level version of the proposed stipulation based sources insertion MLI (SBSIMLI) topology is simulated in MATLAB R2010a and a prototype of the similar specifications is constructed to validate the performance by experimental results. The comparison between the developed SBSIMLI topology and the competent topologies shows many interesting facts.

  • Grid-connected transformerless photovoltaic (PV) inverters (TPVIs) are increasingly dominating the market due to their higher efficiency, lower cost, lighter weight, and reduced size when compared to their transformer based counterparts. However, due to the lack of galvanic isolation in the low voltage grid interconnections of these inverters, the PV systems become vulnerable to leakage currents flowing through the grounded star point of the distribution transformer, the earth, and the distributed parasitic capacitance of the PV modules. These leakage currents are prohibitive, since they constitute an issue for safety, reliability, protection coordination, electromagnetic compatibility, and module lifetime. This paper investigates a wide range of multi-kW range power rating TPVI topologies and classifies them in terms of their leakage current attributes. This systematic classification places most topologies under a small number of classes with basic leakage current attributes. Thus, understanding and evaluating these topologies becomes an easy task. In addition, based on these observations, new topologies with reduced leakage current characteristics are proposed in this paper. Furthermore, the important efficiency and cost determining characteristics of converters are studied to allow design engineers to include cost and efficiency as deciding factors in selecting a converter topology for PV applications.

  • This paper proposes a cost-effective topology to drive a three-phase open-end load based on a five-leg indirect matrix converter (IMC) and a space vector modulation (SVM) method. By sharing an inverter leg with two load terminals, the proposed topology can reduce the number of power switches when compared to topologies based on a direct matrix converter or a six-leg IMC. The new SVM method uses only the active vectors that do not produce common-mode voltage (CMV), which results in zero CMV across the load phase and significantly reduces the peak value of the CMV at the load terminal. Furthermore, the proposed drive system can increase the voltage transfer ratio up to 1.5 and provide a superior performance in terms of an output line-to-line voltage with a three-level pulse-width modulation waveform. Simulation and experimental results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed topology and the new SVM method.

  • This paper proposes a novel Auxiliary Resonant Commutated Pole Inverter (ARCPI) topology. The conventional ARCPIs make the hard switching at turn-off likewise the conventional PWM inverters. Therefore, turn-off switching losses may be so serious and can be so much considerable in high power level. The proposed ARCPI can solve this problem with high frequency transformers, switches, and capacitors. All the switches in the expanded auxiliary circuit achieves the soft switching and operates only during the commutating intervals. The characteristics and the analysis for each operation mode are described in detail and the validity is verified by the simulations and the experimental results.

  • Three-phase system has many problems because of the unbalance load. So we propose two control algorithms using active power filter to dissolve these problems. One is three-leg inverter topology in which ac neutral line is connected directly to the midpoint of two series dc capacitors. The other is four-leg inverter topology in which ac neutral line is provided through a fourth leg. The three-phase unbalance is considered by connecting the load to one-phase. It is show that the proposed control algorithms give good performances.

  • This paper propose the advanced topology of UPQC, its DC link is connected with Lithium battery, to compensate the momentary interruptions. The proposed system can be operated as UPS mode using the parallel inverter, which control the charge or discharge of battery, in case of the interruption. We dvelop 100kVA UPQC using the proposed topology to rise the power quality and the reliability of Microgrid. We verify its usefulness through voltage compensation test, UPS operation test and etc. using Microgrid test facility.

  • The rapid expansion of small computers over the last 10-odd years has brought about great changes in the circumstances affecting UPSs. There are strong demands that UPSs become much smaller and lighter, and more economical, which has resulted in the wide application of the circuit topology without transformer. A disadvantage of such UPS topology is that the DC link voltage is very high, which invites decreased reliability and increased cost of battery bank. Some circuit configurations were proposed to eliminate this disadvantage, but they still had problems. In this paper, a novel circuit configuration which eliminates these problems is proposed and evaluated by the experimental results of prototype UPS.

  • Recently, asymmetrical cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter started to be highlighted as an alternative for the symmetrical cascaded H-bridge. The topology has a small number of part count compared to the symmetrical with higher number of levels. However, it has a drawback of the modulation index limitation which is relatively higher than its symmetrical counterpart, which causes a necessity of an extra voltage pre-regulator. In this paper, the single-sourced pre-regulator is unified with an inner single switch DC/DC converter isolated by coupled inductor. It leads to cost and size reduction. The proposed topology is verified using simulation results.

  • This paper proposes performance improvement schemes for sensorless PMSM control drive using a four-switch three-phase inverter (so-called B4 inverter). In the proposed scheme, the back-EMF estimation-based sensorless control algorithm is used to control the brushless PMSM without position sensors. In order to have stable operation, this paper presents a gain adjustment scheme that compensates the reduction of stable sensorless operation range as long as the rotor speed increases. In B4 topology, the center point of dc-link capacitors is connected to 3-phase load, and it is prone to have the load current distortion. Hence, to mitigate this problem, a distortion compensation scheme by modifying voltage commands using measured dc-link potentials is proposed in this paper. The validity of the proposed method is evaluated by simulations and experiments.

  • This paper presents a newly proposed prototype of voltage-fed half-bridge partial resonant zero voltage switching PWM inverter operating at a constant frequency variable power regulation scheme, which is more suitable and acceptable for induction heated(IH) cooking appliances. This application-specific high frequency inverter circuit topology using a new generation specially-designed IGBTs can operate under a principle of a fixed frequency ZVS-PWM strategy. The operating principle of a new partial resonant inverter circuit is described on the basis of its computer-aided simulation analysis, its including steady-state operating characteristics.
