Purpose: The purpose of this study is to guide the operation managers who plan daily production of large mass-processing facility that services multi-customers with multi-product, small-batch item characteristics by providing the practical best production quantity and the inventory allowed to build. Methods: Close observation of a subcontract paint-shop operator captured the daily decision process which was reflected in the subcontractor-unique mathematical model and the system dynamics simulation model. Multiple simulations were run to find the practical best production quantity and the maximum allowable stock level of inventory that did not undermine the profit from practical best daily production. Actual data and a few constant values were obtained from the firm under study. Results: While the inventory holding cost for the customer-owned material harms the total profit of the subcontractor, the running cost of the processing facility hinders production in small batches. This balances the maximum possible productions and results in practical best daily production which can be found through simulation runs with actual data. The maximum level of stocked inventory is deduced from the practical best daily production. Conclusion: To build a large volume that enables economy-of-scale production, operators should deal with multi-product small-batch items from multiple customers. When the planned schedule of the time and amount of material in-flow tend not to be reliable, operators can find it practical to execute level production across the planning horizon instead of adjusting to day-to-day in-flow fluctuations.
This study was carried out to develop a system for forest resources inventory using PDA. The Forest Inventory Software running on PDA was developed based on a Forest Resources Inventory Method by Korea Forestry Service and 4th National Forest Inventory Method. The forest inventory data stored in PDA contains sea level and GPS positioning data. Forest inventory input items are 34 tree species, 18 diameter class by each tree species, number of trees, tree height per each diameter class, thickness of bark, and annual growth of tree. Application test of the software with the forest workers shorted that, hours of forest works were remarkably reduced. It is possible to do forest inventory effectively using Forest Inventory Software developed by this study. Therefore, investigation and management expenses can be reduced and labor productivity will be improved.

This paper deals with on (S-1, S) spare-part inventory model for multi-stage machine repair problem with attrition. The steady-state availability of the system is maximized under some constraints such as total cost, available space etc.. The problem is formulated as a closed queueing network and the system availability is calculated by Buzen's computational algorithm. In order to find the optimal numbers of spare units and repair channels for each operating stage, the problem is formulated as a non-linear integer programming(NLIP) problem and an efficient algorithm. which is a natural extension of the new Lawler-Bell algorithm of Sasaki et el., is used to solve the NLIP problem. A numerical example is given to illustrate the algorithm.
It calls for positive consideration of RFID technologies applying to the operation of the optimum VMI system for decreasing safety inventory. Based on the above-said considerations, the present author judges that the introduction of RFID into the consumer goods distribution industry is one of the important issues to be settled in the future. Conclusively, this study proposes that, for the sake of the operation of VMI system, the aforesaid problems should be positively examined and efficient methods promptly developed, so as to reinforce the competitiveness of enterprises.

This paper concerns a joint replenishment problem for a single buyer who sells multiple types of items to end-customers. The buyer periodically replenishes the inventory of each item to a preset order-up-to-level to satisfy the end customers' demands, which may be non-stationary. A joint replenishment policy characterized by variable order-up-to-levels is proposed for the buyer who wishes to minimize the expected cost of operating the retail system. The proposed policy starts each period by calculating the expected cost of ordering and not ordering action based on the information of the current inventory position and forecasted demand for the upcoming period. It then takes advantage of an integer programming model to get a cost effective joint replenishment plan. Computer experiment was performed to test efficiency of the proposed policy. When compared with the most efficient policy currently available, our policy showed a considerable cost savings especially for the problems having non-stationary demands.
This study proposes a collaboration system framework on the web service in a supply chain to implement an efficient virtual supply chain and improve an ability to fulfill received orders over a supply chain. The system based on the framework proposed in this paper plays an important role for automatic order negotiation and placing/receiving an order noticed in web service by the main system. Furthermore, it can evaluate the fulfillment of received orders over a supply chain by using the transaction results from hierarchically related vendors and establish efficient manufacturing plans. In a word, this system is the automated system for creating manufacturing plans, placing and receiving orders. A little more important main function of this system is that it has a dynamic evaluation capability about fulfillment with received orders over a supply chain, and improves the evaluation method of fulfillment ability with received orders with related to direct dealing vendors, which is a main problem in existing system. As a result, this system is able to reduce the work load of the sales and purchasing materials, production control division, to manage accurate inventory promptly, to maintain the optimal inventory level by analyzing the information of fulfillment ability with received orders, and to enhance the level of service for customers.

This paper describes the efforts in developing several versions of bridge management system (BMS) in Taiwan. There were several versions of stand-alone BMS developed in Taiwan prior to the Ji-Ji earthquake that occurred in year 1999. Since many bridges were seriously damaged by this earthquake, the Ministry of Transportation and Communication determined to develop a nationwide BMS to have a better by control on the status of bridge maintenance. Implemented in year 2000, the Taiwan Bridge Management system (T-BMS) is now the dominating and mandatory system used by all the government agencies that are responsible for bridge maintenance. Having more then 25,000 bridges in its inventory, T-BMS has thousands of logins per month to update data in the relevant database. The experiences and difficulties of using such a nationwide bridge management system are discussed. Finally, future plans for BMS development are also proposed in this paper.
