  • In this paper, the problem of interfacial stresses in steel beams strengthened with a fiber reinforced polymer plates is analyzed using linear elastic theory. The analysis is based on the deformation compatibility approach developed by Tounsi (2006) where both the shear and normal stresses are assumed to be invariant across the adhesive layer thickness. The analysis provides efficient calculations for both shear and normal interfacial stresses in steel beams strengthened with composite plates, and accounts for various effects of Poisson's ratio and Young's modulus of adhesive. Such interfacial stresses play a fundamental role in the mechanics of plated beams, because they can produce a sudden and premature failure. The analysis is based on equilibrium and deformations compatibility approach developed by Tounsi (2006). In the present theoretical analysis, the adherend shear deformations are taken into account by assuming a parabolic shear stress through the thickness of both the steel beam and bonded plate. The paper is concluded with a summary and recommendations for the design of the strengthened beam.

  • Characterization of discontinuous media is an endeavor that poses great challenge to engineers in practice. Since the inherent defects in cracked domains can substantially influence material resistance and govern its behavior, a lot of work is dedicated to efficiently model such effects. In order to overcome difficulties of material instability problems, one needs to comprehensively represent the geometry of cracks along with their impact on the mechanical properties of the intact material. In the present study, stress-strain results from laboratory experiments on Inada granite was used to derive crack tensor as a tool for the evaluation of fractured domain stability. It was found that the formulations proposed earlier could satisfactorily be employed to attain crack tensor via the invariants of which judgment on cracks population and induced anisotropy is possible. The earlier criteria based on crack tensor analyses were reviewed and compared to the results of the current study. It is concluded that the geometrical parameters calculated using mechanical properties could confidently be used to judge the anisotropy as well as strength of the cracked domain.

  • The submerged body near the free surface is disturbed by the 1st and 2nd order wave forces, which results in unstable movements when no control is applied. In this paper, the vertical motions of the submerged body are analyzed, and the time-variant nonlinear system for the vertical motions of the submerged body is transformed to the time-invariant linear system in state space. Next, depth controller of the submerged body is designed by using LQR control, one of the modern optimal control technique. Numerical simulation shows that effective depth controls can be achieved by LQR control.

  • Due to the rapid advancement of auto-refractor technology, most optometry shops provide refraction services. Despite their speed and convenience, the measurement values provided by auto-refractors include a significant degree of error due to psychological and physical factors. Therefore, there is a need for repetitive testing to obtain a smaller mean error value. However, even repetitive testing itself might not be sufficient to ensure accurate measurements. Therefore, research on a method of measurement that can complement auto-refractor measurements and provide confirmation of refraction results needs to be conducted. The customized optometry model described herein can satisfy the above requirements. With existing technologies, using human eye measurement devices to obtain relevant individual optical feature parameters is no longer difficult, and these parameters allow us to construct an optometry model for individual eyeballs. They also allow us to compute visual images produced from the optometry model using the CODE V macro programming language before recognizing the diffraction effects visual images with the neural network algorithm to obtain the accurate refractive diopter. This study attempts to combine the optometry model with the back-propagation neural network and achieve a double check recognition effect by complementing the auto-refractor. Results show that the accuracy achieved was above 98% and that this application could significantly enhance the service quality of refraction.

  • Let ${\mu}$ be a finite positive Borel measure on the unit ball $B{\subset}{\mathbb{C}}^n$ and ${\nu}$ be the Euclidean volume measure such that ${\nu}(B)=1$. For the unit sphere $S=\{z:{\mid}z{\mid}=1\}$, ${\sigma}$ is the rotation-invariant measure on S such that ${\sigma}(S) =1$. Let ${\mathcal{P}}[f]$ be the Poisson-$Szeg{\ddot{o}}$ integral of f and $\tilde{\mu}$ be the Berezin transform of ${\mu}$. In this paper, we show that if there is a constant M > 0 such that ${\int_B}{\mid}{\mathcal{P}}[f](z){\mid}^pd{\mu}(z){\leq}M{\int_B}{\mid}{\mathcal{P}}[f](z){\mid}^pd{\nu}(z)$ for all $f{\in}L^p(\sigma)$, then ${\parallel}{\tilde{\mu}}{\parallel}_{\infty}{\equiv}{\sup}_{z{\in}B}{\mid}{\tilde{\mu}}(z){\mid}<{\infty}$, and we show that if ${\parallel}{\tilde{\mu}{\parallel}_{\infty}<{\infty}$, then ${\int_B}{\mid}{\mathcal{P}}[f](z){\mid}^pd{\mu}(z){\leq}C{\mid}{\mid}{\tilde{\mu}}{\mid}{\mid}_{\infty}{\int_S}{\mid}f(\zeta){\mid}^pd{\sigma}(\zeta)$ for some constant C.

  • Purpose: The influence of age on time preference is not identified in the usual cross-sectional analysis. This study aims to test whether age affects time preference after controlling for the effects of individual heterogeneity including cohort effects. Research design, data and methodology: Drawing on a nationally representative panel dataset of Indonesians, we estimate the effects of age on time preference after controlling for unobserved individual heterogeneity as well as potential cohort effects. We measure time preference exploiting information on two sets of multiple price lists: one for a one-year delay, and the other for a five-year delay. Results: When we controlled for time-invariant individual characteristics, including birth cohort effects in a fixed effects model, the older men and women were more patient in a linear fashion, particularly when the delay was longer. To highlight the importance of controlling for individual fixed effects, we repeated the specification without controlling for individual fixed effects in OLS or censored maximum likelihood regression; we found no relation between age and impatience in men or women and for a one or five-year delay. Conclusions: The older men and women are more patient, and time preferences are correlated with unobserved individual heterogeneity.

  • Copy-move forgery (CMF) in digital images is a detrimental tampering of artefacts that requires precise detection and analysis. CMF is performed by copying and pasting a part of an image into other portions of it. Despite several efforts to detect CMF, accurate identification of noise, blur and rotated region-mediated forged image areas is still difficult. A novel algorithm is developed on the basis of quaternion polar complex exponential transform (QPCET) to detect CMF and is conducted involving a few steps. Firstly, the suspicious image is divided into overlapping blocks. Secondly, invariant features for each block are extracted using QPCET. Thirdly, the duplicated image blocks are determined using k-dimensional tree (kd-tree) block matching. Lastly, a new technique is introduced to reduce the flat region-mediated false matches. Experiments are performed on numerous images selected from the CoMoFoD database. MATLAB 2017b is used to employ the proposed method. Metrics such as correct and false detection ratios are utilised to evaluate the performance of the proposed CMF detection method. Experimental results demonstrate the precise and efficient CMF detection capacity of the proposed approach even under image distortion including rotation, scaling, additive noise, blurring, brightness, colour reduction and JPEG compression. Furthermore, our method can solve the false match problem and outperform existing ones in terms of precision and false positive rate. The proposed approach may serve as a basis for accurate digital image forensic investigations.

  • Let $f:X{\rightarrow}X$ be a continuous map on a compact metric space (X, d) and for an arbitrary $x{\in}X$, $${\mathcal{SC}}_d(x,f):=\{y{\mid}x{\text{ can be strong }}d-{\text{chain to }}y\}$$. We give an example to show that ${\mathcal{SC}}_d(x,f)$ is dependent on the metric d on X but it is a closed and f-invariant set. We prove that if ${\mathcal{SC}}_d(x,f){\supseteq}{\Omega}(f)$ or f has the asymptotic-average shadowing property, then ${\mathcal{SC}}_d(x,f)=X$. Also, we show that if f has the shadowing property, then ${\lim}\;{\sup}_{n{\in}{\mathbb{N}}}\{f^n\}={\mathcal{SC}}_d(f)$ where ${\mathcal{SC}}_d(f)=\{(x,y){\mid}y{\in}{\mathcal{SC}}_d(x,f)\}$. For each $n{\in}{\mathbb{N}}$, we give an example in which ${\mathcal{SCR}}_d(f^n){\neq}{\mathcal{SCR}}_d(f)$. In spite of it, we prove that if $f^{-1}:(X,d){\rightarrow}(X,d)$ is an equicontinuous map, then ${\mathcal{SCR}}_d(f^n)={\mathcal{SCR}}_d(f)$ for all $n{\in}{\mathbb{N}}$.

  • In the five first sections of this paper we define and study the hypergeometric transmutation operators $V^W_k$ and $^tV^W_k$ called also the trigonometric Dunkl intertwining operator and its dual corresponding to the Heckman-Opdam's theory on ${\mathbb{R}}^d$. By using these operators we define the hypergeometric translation operator ${\mathcal{T}}^W_x$, $x{\in}{\mathbb{R}}^d$, and its dual $^t{\mathcal{T}}^W_x$, $x{\in}{\mathbb{R}}^d$, we express them in terms of the hypergeometric Fourier transform ${\mathcal{H}}^W$, we give their properties and we deduce simple proofs of the Plancherel formula and the Plancherel theorem for the transform ${\mathcal{H}}^W$. We study also the hypergeometric convolution product on W-invariant $L^p_{\mathcal{A}k}$-spaces, and we obtain some interesting results. In the sixth section we consider a some root system of type $BC_d$ (see [17]) of whom the corresponding hypergeometric translation operator is a positive integral operator. By using this positivity we improve the results of the previous sections and we prove others more general results.
