  • A lot of researchers have been investigating interactive portable projection systems such as a mini-projector. In addition, in exhibition halls and museums, there is a trend toward using interactive projection systems to make viewing more exciting and impressive. They can also be applied in the field of art, for example, in creating shadow plays. The key idea of the interactive portable projection systems is to recognize the user's gesture in real-time. In this paper, a vision-based shadow gesture recognition method is proposed for interactive projection systems. The gesture recognition method is based on the screen image obtained by a single web camera. The method separates only the shadow area by combining the binary image with an input image using a learning algorithm that isolates the background from the input image. The region of interest is recognized with labeling the shadow of separated regions, and then hand shadows are isolated using the defect, convex hull, and moment of each region. To distinguish hand gestures, Hu's invariant moment method is used. An optical flow algorithm is used for tracking the fingertip. Using this method, a few interactive applications are developed, which are presented in this paper.

  • In active vibration control of building, controller design considering both control input saturation of controller and parameter uncertainties of building is needed. In our previous research, we proposed a robust saturation controller which guarantees robust stability and control performance of the uncertain linear time-invariant system in the presence of control input saturation. In this paper, the availability of the robust saturation controller for the building with an active mass damper (AMD) system is verified through experimental tests. Experimental tests are carried oui using a two-story building model with a hydraulic-type AMD.

  • Visual cryptography is a scheme that recovers secret image through human vision by overlapping distributed share images without cryptographic operations. Distribution methods are still being developed for improving quality of shared images keeping size of images invariant and enhancing robustness against resize of images. Since visual cryptography only uses shared images, this fact is exploited to attack. From this fact, a scheme safe for sharing distributed images is needed. In this paper, a new visual cryptographic scheme using cover image is proposed. This scheme reduces the chance of detection against steganalysis and increases security. In addition, this paper shows that the proposed scheme can completely decrypt secret image without creating noise.

  • Structural parameter evaluation and external force estimation are two important parts of structural health monitoring. But the structural parameter identification with limited input information is still a challenging problem. A new simultaneous identification method in time domain is proposed in this study to identify the structural parameters and evaluate the external force. Each sampling point in the time history of external force is taken as the unknowns in force evaluation. To reduce the number of unknowns for force evaluation the time domain measurements are divided into several windows. In each time window the structural excitation is decomposed by orthogonal polynomials. The time-variant excitation can be represented approximately by the linear combination of these orthogonal bases. Structural parameters and the coefficients of decomposition are added to the state variable to be identified. The extended Kalman filter (EKF) is augmented and selected as the mathematical tool for the implementation of state variable evaluation. The proposed method is validated numerically with simulation studies of a time-invariant linear structure, a hysteretic nonlinear structure and a time-variant linear shear frame, respectively. Results from the simulation studies indicate that the proposed method is capable of identifying the dynamic load and structural parameters fairly accurately. This method could also identify the time-variant and nonlinear structural parameter even with contaminated incomplete measurement.

  • A feature-based image recognition method, using features of an object, can be performed faster than a template matching technique. Invariant feature-based panoramic image generation, an application of image recognition, requires large amount of time to match features between two images. This paper proposes a speed-up method of feature matching using feature strength information. Our algorithm extracts features in images, computes their feature strength information, and selects strong features points which are used to match the selected features. The strong features can be referred to as meaningful ones than the weak features. In the experiments, it was shown that our method speeded up over 40% of processing time than the technique without using feature strength information.

  • Motivation: Many have observed a nonlinear relationship between the signal intensity and the transcript abundance in microarray data. The first step in analyzing the data is to normalize it properly, and this should include a correction for the nonlinearity. The commonly used linear normalization schemes do not address this problem. Results: Nonlinearity is present in both cDNA and oligonucleotide arrays, but we concentrate on the latter in this paper. Across a set of chips, we identify those genes whose within-chip ranks are relatively constant compared to other genes of similar intensity. For each gene, we compute the sum of the squares of the differences in its within-chip ranks between every pair of chips as our statistic and we select a small fraction of the genes with the minimal changes in ranks at each intensity level. These genes are most likely to be non-differentially expressed and are subsequently used in the normalization procedure. This method is a generalization of the rank-invariant normalization (Li and Wong, 2001), using all available chips rather than two at a time to gather more information, while using the chip that is least likely to be affected by nonlinear effects as the reference chip. The assumption in our method is that there are at least a small number of nondifferentially expressed genes across the intensity range. The normalized expression values can be substantially different from the unnormalized values and may result in altered down-stream analysis.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm for organ recognition in ultrasound images using log power spectrum. The main procedure of the algorithm consists of feature extraction and feature classification. In the feature extraction, as a translation invariant feature, log power spectrum is used for extracting the information on echo of the organs tissue from a preprocessed input image. In the feature classification, Mahalanobis distance is used as a measure of the similarity between the feature of an input image and the representative feature of each class. Experimental results for real ultrasound images show that the proposed algorithm yields the improvement of maximum 30% recognition rate than the recognition algorithm using power spectrum and Euclidean distance, and results in better recognition rate of 10-40% than the recognition algorithm using weighted quefrency complex cepstrum.

  • This aper introduces the multiple Neocognitron module approach for the effective target reognition. The Neocognitron which is designed to classify a pattern by extracting the local features from it, seems to be an unique method that can perform a pattern recognition using the neural networks. But due to its rigid structure, the Neocognitron must be reconstructed whenever there exists a variation on the number of classes. This is a quite difficult problem for the target recognition application that needs huge amount of computation and numerous classes to be classified. In this paper, we construct several smaller Necognitrom modules and train each module to adapt each class. After construction of the mulules, we integrate them in parallel so as to adaopt input at the same time and to produce each score that shold be matched to be learned class. This approach can reduce the sizes of the networks and is adaptive to the increase of classes as well as the authentic distortion, shift, scale variation and slight rotation invariant properties of general Neocognitron. This paper show the effectiveness of the proposed approach through some experience and performs analysis of the inhibitory interconnections in the architecture of the multiple module structure.

  • This paper presents a new approach to the problem of designing a cascaded three-parameters controller for a given linear time invariant (LTD plant in unity feedback system. We consider a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) and a first-order controller with specified overshoot and settling time. This problem is difficult to solve because there may be no analytical solution due to the use of low-order controller and furthermore. the zeros of controller just appear in the zeros of feedback system. The key idea of our method is to impose a constraint on the controller parameters so that the zeros of resulting controller are distant from the dominant pole of closed-loop system to the left as far as the given interval. Two methods realizing the idea are suggested. We have employed the characteristic ratio assignment (CRA) in order to deal with the time response specifications. It is noted that the proposed methods are accomplished only in parameter space. Several illustrative examples are given.

  • In this note, a proof of Utkin's theorem is presented for SI(Single input) uncertain linear systems. The invariance theorem with respect to the two transformation methods so called the two diagonalization methods is proved clearly and comparatively for SI uncertain linear systems. With respect to the sliding surface transformation, the equation of the sliding mode i.e., the sliding surface is invariant. The control inputs by the two transformation methods both have the same gains. By means of the two transformation methods, the same results can be obtained. Through an illustrative example and simulation study, the usefulness of the main results is verified.
