  • WBAN has received great attention recently due to its versatile applicability. In this paper, antennas suitable for WBAN communication depending on the locations of mobile devices and the manufacturing of a human equivalent phantom are introduced. The effect of the body on the communication performance is largely dependent on the locations of devices. Specifically, the radiation and return loss characteristics of the antenna are greatly influenced by the characteristics of a medium existing in the near-field of an antenna. Thus, the proper WBAN antenna design is important in establishing a successful communication link between the transceivers. To consider the effect of the body on the antenna performance, the human equivalent phantom is also important factor in the WBAN antenna design and measurement. In introduction, categorization of the WBAN communication channel is introduced and antenna characteristics required for each communication channel are described. In the main subject section, several WBAN antenna design examples along with the implementation of the human equivalent phantom are discussed. In conclusion, the factors, which have to be considered in the design process, and future research are mentioned.

  • Non-ductile detailing of Reinforced Concrete (RC) frames may lead to structural failure when the structure is subjected to earthquake response. These designs are generally encountered in older RC frames constructed prior to the introduction of the ductility aspect. The failure observed in the beam-column joints (BCJs) and accompanied by excessive column damage. This work examines the seismic performance and failure mode of non-ductile designed RC columns and exterior BCJs. The design was based on the actual building in Tainan City, Taiwan, that collapsed due to the 2016 Meinong earthquake. Hence, an experimental investigation using cyclic testing was performed on two columns and two BCJ specimens scaled down to 50%. The experiment resulted in a poor response in both specimens. Excessive cracks and their propagation due to the incursion of the lateral loads could be observed close to the top and bottom of the specimens. Joint shear failure appeared in the joints. The ductility of the member was below the desired value of 4. This is the minimum number required to survive an earthquake with a similar magnitude to that of El Centro. The evidence provides an understanding of the seismic failure of poorly detailed RC frame structures.

  • In the modern industrial period, the introduction of mass production was most important progress in civilization. Die-casting process is one of main methods for mass production in the modern industry. The aluminum die-casting in the mold filling process is very complicated where flow momentum is the high velocity of the liquid metal. Actually, it is almost impossible in complex parts exactly to figure the mold filling performance out with the experimental knowledge. The aluminum die-castings are important processes in the automotive industry to produce the lightweight automobile bodies. Due to this condition, the simulation is going to be more critical role in the design procedure. Simulation can give the best solution of a casting system and also enhance the casting quality. The cost and time savings of the casting layout design are the most advantage of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE). Generally, the relations of casting conditions such as injection system, gate system, and cooling system should be considered when designing the casting layout. Due to the various relative matters of the above conditions, product defects such as defect extent and location are significantly difference. In this research by using the simulation software (AnyCasting), CAE simulation was conducted with three layout designs to find out the best alternative for the casting layout design of an automotive Oil Pan_BJ3E. In order to apply the simulation results into the production die-casting mold, they were analyzed and compared carefully. Internal porosities which are caused by air entrapments during the filling process were predicted and also the results of three models were compared with the modifications of the gate system and overflows. Internal porosities which are occurred during the solidification process are predicted with the solidification analysis. And also the results of the modified gate system are compared.

  • For students majoring in Architecture or Architectural Engineering, describing a building with pictures and signs is equal to expressing his/her opinion with sentences and presentations. CAD (computer aided design) is a method of describing buildings, and is used practically in architecture-related companies. Many universities prescribe CAD instruction as a compulsory subject, and ABEEK (Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea) requires an introduction to CAD as a basic subject for visual expression. The Architectural Drawing and CAD class in the department of Architectural Engineering of J University is a 2-credit course, with 4 hours of lectures per week. Relative to other subjects, this is insufficient for practical study. Thus, to make up for this insufficient time, the class has adopted a Blended learning system that mixes off-line and on-line classes. The objective of this research is to introduce Blended learning, and to give a case study of the CAD class using Blended learning.

  • An AUTomotive Open System ARchitecture (AUTOSAR) is a de-facto standardized software platform, which developed for an automotive Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in global automotive industry. AUTOSAR improves the reusability and the scalability, thus the software development can be easier, faster and more reliable. However, it requires a lot of time and efforts to develop an AUTOSAR software due to the difficulties of understanding of massive AUTOSAR documentations and complicated usage of AUTOSAR design tools. AUTOSAR training is offered by AUTOSAR design tool venders but it is limited to introduction of their simplified concept and usages based on PC. Therefore the training is not enough for industrial developers or graduate students. In this paper we present an AUTOSAR starter kit which allows industrial engineers and graduate students to practice the detailed process of AUTOSAR software development easily and more conveniently. The kit is composed of a practical environment similar to actual automotive system and a textbook that explains how to design AUTOSAR software. And we demonstrated the validity of our methodology based on a case study.

  • Narratively I have described interactions between two teachers performing an introduction to the engineering class with various situations such as place, teacher, student and subject. I have specifically illuminated a three-dimensional narrative inquiry space embracing the culture of the university, the college of engineering and the ABEEK(Accreditation Board of Engineering Education of Korea)program. The result of the study is as follows: First, in order to stimulate the students' motivation, the teachers have to make not only their class PowerPoint slides match the size of the classroom, but the content of the slides must be condensed with core concepts. They also should utilized some video clips to empower students' interest in the subject within their classrooms. Second, the teachers should do various class activities in the classroom. Instead of spending most of the class time with his/her explanation, it would be advantageous for the teachers to allow the students to perform a task in class. Third, the teachers should ask their students about assignments which are helping students' understanding of the subject and planning of their future. Lastly, the teachers need to design the mid-term and the final tests inducing the students' motivation. Those tests also must test students' creativity and insight of the subject. Thus, the test should consist of an interpretive exercise and an essay type of item thus reducing the multiple choice types of items. There are several limitations to the study. First it is difficult to generalize what we found here because it is a case study. Second, we could not study in depth the effect of the interaction between the two teachers who were performing the introduction to the engineering course during the academic semester. Third, this study just probed into the difficulties of teaching the course. Hence, we have to understand more by focusing on each issue such as adapting to a new learning environment as a student from abroad, a practical experience boosting the students' interest in the introduction to the engineering course, also a practical experience on process based learning-versus result based learning, and an effective management of the student team presentation etc.

  • This paper utilizes the method of Q-parameterization control to design a controller which solves the problem of imbalance in magnetic bearing systems. There are two methods to solve this problem using feedback controal. The first method is to compensate for the imbalance forces by generating opposing forces on the bearing surface (imbalance compensation). The second method is to make the rotor rotate around its axis of inertia (automatic balancing);in this case no imbalance forces will be generated. In this paper we deal with only imbalance compensation. The free parameter of the Q-parameterization controller is chosen such that these goals are achieved. After the introduction of a model of the magnetic bearing system, we explain the Q-parameterization controller design of the magnetic bearing system with emphasis on the rejection of sinusoidal disturbance for imbalance compensation design. The design objectives are formulated as a linear equations in the controller free paramete Q. Finally, simulation and experimental results are presented and showed the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed controllers.

  • The precast prestressed concrete girders of I-type section are frequently employed to design the short-to-medium span bridge. However, its beam depth is greatly increased as its span length is increased over than about 30m. Therefore, the economic and aesthetic effectiveness are rapidly decreased in case of the span length over 30m. The purpose of this paper is to verify the structural safety on the new spliced two span bridge and analyze the variation of member forces and stress distribution according to the construction stages and time. The new spliced technique is performed by partial post tensioning and release in the U-type girders. The structural characteristics of this technique is the introduction of secondary moment to reduce the bending moment by self weight of precast U-type girders constructed in simply supported beam type. So, it is expected that the structural efficiency of this spliced bridge may be improved more than other techniques.
