  • Science teachers often suppose that students are able to know the symbolical meaning of graphs when they see the graphs. But such a assumption is not based on the firm theories but a mere image. And we need to search them for holding the abilities to construct and to interpret. In addition, unfortunately, many researchers show that they scarcely have the graphing skills. And then, The Test of Graphing in Science(TOGS) was administered to 535 7th to 12th graders, for we search them for holding the graphing abilities to some degree. Though the higher grade, the better score, they lack the first three among 9 objectives of TOGS which are scaling axes, assigning variables to the axes, using a best fit line, plotting points, translating a graph that displays the data, selecting the corresponding value for y(or x), interrelating/extrapolating graphs, describing the relationship between variables, interrelating the results of the two graphs. It was concluded from this that subjects' graph construction is lower than their graph interpretation in graph skills. It suggests that school science have a bias toward graph interpretation. This tendency represents more strikingly in the case of upper students in TOGS than the others'.

  • The purpose of this paper is to introduce time-series causality analysis by combining time-series technique with graph theory. Vector autoregressive (VAR) models can provide reasonable interpretation only when the contemporaneous variables stand in a well-defined causal order. We show that how graph theory can be applied to search for the causal structure In VAR analysis. Using Maryland crop cash prices and CBOT futures price data, we estimate a VAR model with directed acyclic graph analysis. This expands our understanding the degree of interconnectivity between the employed time-series variables.

  • The purpose of this study was to find a way to improve the science textbook graph through analyzing teachers' interpretation process with eye movement tracking when they try to read the science textbook graph. Participants in this project were 10 elementary school teachers while bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts in 2007 revision science textbooks were used as materials. SMI (SensoMotoric Instruments)' iView X TM RED 120 Hz was used in order to collect eye movement data. Although subjects paid attention to the title of the graph at first, the consequence of the eye fixation was changed by the composition of the graph in case of the rest of areas. In particular, the flow of visual attention and fixation time were affected by the form and configuration of the graph. The diversity of graph construction caused confusion in interpreting graphs; the manner of presenting title, the difference of background colors, size of characters, the name of X-axis and Y-axis. Out results showed that the conformation of graphs as well as the presentation of each factor should be composed in accordance with the educational purpose for helping users to easier understanding.

  • Graph is a major aspect of science textbooks. In this study, we investigated graph types and characteristics used in high school earth science subject by comparative analysis of science textbooks. The results of the analysis revealed that line graph and contour map was the most widely used graph types in earth science. Among line graphs, multiple line graph and YX graph was dominant. Comparing earth science graphs with other science graphs, earth science graphs exhibited superior in the number and variety. In earth science graphs, the portion of line graph was small, but the portion of contour map and scatter graph was larger than that of other science graphs. YX graph was the most specific graph type in earth science textbooks. The results of our study have implications for reform in function and structure of graph. We suggest that future studies be focused on students' ability of earth science graph interpretation.

  • This study has analyzed the effect of graph activity using CBR on the graphic ability through the observation on the 4 math-gifted 5th grade students. The study had designed the graph activity class using CBR based on the theories of graph and progressed it twice for 40 minutes, respectably. The recorded videos of the classes and the interviews of students were collected for analyzing the data, and 2 weeks later, post inspection using the same questionnaire was held for the comparative analysis on the errors that the students had made in the interpretation of the graph. According to the results of this study, the students were able to understand the flow change of the graph, interpret the relationship between variables, and contextualize the dependent variables.

  • Knowledge graph is a technology that improves search results by using semantic information based on various resources. Therefore, due to these advantages, the knowledge graph is being defined as one of the core research technologies to provide AI-based services recently. However, in the case of the knowledge graph, since the form of knowledge collected from various service domains is defined as plain text, it is very important to be able to analyze the text and understand its meaning. Recently, various lexical dictionaries have been proposed together with the knowledge graph, but since most lexical dictionaries are defined in a language other than Korean, there is a problem in that the corresponding language dictionary cannot be used when providing a Korean knowledge service. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an ontology based on the parts of speech of Korean. The proposed ontology uses 9 parts of speech in Korean to enable the interpretation of words and their semantic meaning through a semantic connection between word class and word class. We also studied various scenarios to apply the proposed ontology to vehicle services.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze how a mathematics teacher and a high school student make the meaning in a graph and how aspects of the interpretation of a graph are interacted during the signification process, and to suggest considerations for teaching and learning of a graph. The findings of a case study have led to conclusions as follows: All of them have a difficulty in making the meaning in a graph and construct the meaning as a nested signification model. In the process which they make the meaning, they interrelate cognitive, contextual, and affective aspects and construct interpretants. In this process, a teacher focuses on cognitive aspect, based on a qualitative approach. But a student considers contextual aspect more, based on a quantitative approach. This study suggests three considerations for teaching and learning of a graph.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of MBL experiment instruction on the 7th graders' scientific inquiry skills and graph construction and interpretation ability in the unit "Elements and movement of sea water". Results are as follows: First, this study analyzed the influence on students' scientific inquiry skill after having six MBL instructional classes. The result showed a significant difference in the scientific inquiry skills between the experimental group and the control group, which implies that the instruction using MBL was an effective way to improve students' scientific inquiry skills. Second, this study also analyzed the influence on students' abilities to construct and interpret graphs. The result did not show any significant differences between the experimental group and the control group in the ability to construct graphs. But it showed significant differences in the ability to interpretgraphs, which means that instruction using MBL was an effective way to improve students' ability to interpret graphs.

  • In order to maintain and evaluate the adequate humidity and temperature of a museum, the data of these should be periodically monitored and accumulated. For this purpose, We have designed the interpretation method of charts of the widely used thermo hydrorecorder at the museum, and developed the computer-based program (name of the program : HATH interpretation program). This method is as follows; The recording of thermo hydrorecorder(model ; Sato R-704) Input a through scanner (UMAX type), and was transformed into numerical value and was processed the statistics by HATH interpretation program. Output can be present the numerical value and the graph which are classified by a day, a month, and a year. By this method, the humidity and temperature data which were taken from 12points in the exhibition case, storage and outdoor of the Ho-Am art Museum in 1995 were processed. At the results, its ability for fast processing, management and analysis of the data was proved to be excellent.
