In this paper grid generation of unstructured quadrilateral surface grids is described. The current approach uses conventional Advancing Front Method which is used to generate unstructured triangular grids. Grid cell size control is done by using closeness-based global interpolation method controlled by pre-described control elements. Algorithm and procedure for quadrilateral grid generation using AFM method and cell size control method are described. Examples of quadrilateral grid generation are shown, and difficulties and problems related to the current approach are also discussed.

This paper comprises two specific objectives. The first is to examine the applicability of Ordinary Kriging interpolation(OK) to finite element method that is based on variogram modeling in conjunction with different allowable limits of separation distance. The second is to investigate the accuracy according to theoretical variograms such as polynomial, Gauss, and spherical models. For this purpose, the weighted least square method is applied to obtain the estimated new stress field from the stress data at the Gauss points. The weight factor is determined by experimental and theoretical variograms for interpolation of stress data apart from the conventional interpolation methods that use an equal weight factor. The validity of the proposed approach has been tested by analyzing two numerical examples. It is noted that the numerical results by Gauss model using 25% allowable limit of separation distance show an excellent agreement with theoretical solutions in literature.
Reconstructing underwater geometry in real time with forward-looking sonar is critical for applications such as localization, mapping, and path planning. Geometrical data must be repeatedly calculated and overwritten in real time because the reliability of the acoustic data is affected by various factors. Moreover, scattering of signal data during the coordinate conversion process may lead to geometrical errors, which lowers the accuracy of the information obtained by the sensor system. In this study, we propose a three-step data processing method with low computational cost for real-time operation. First, the number of data points to be interpolated is determined with respect to the distance between each point and the size of the data grid in a Cartesian coordinate system. Then, the data are processed with a nonlinear interpolation so that they exhibit linear properties in the coordinate system. Finally, the data are transformed based on variations in the position and orientation of the sonar over time. The results of an evaluation of our proposed approach in a simulation show that the nonlinear interpolation operation constructed a continuous underwater geometry dataset with low geometrical error.

The electroencephalogram (EEG) time series is a measure of electrical activity received from multiple electrodes placed on the scalp of a human brain. It provides a direct measurement for characterizing the dynamic aspects of brain activities. These EEG signals are formed from a series of spatial and temporal data with multiple dimensions. Missing data could occur due to fault electrodes. These missing data can cause distortion, repudiation, and further, reduce the effectiveness of analyzing algorithms. Current methodologies for EEG analysis require a complete set of EEG data matrix as input. Therefore, an accurate and reliable imputation approach for missing values is necessary to avoid incomplete data sets for analyses and further improve the usage of performance techniques. This research proposes a new method to automatically recover random consecutive missing data from real world EEG data based on Linear Dynamical System. The proposed method aims to capture the optimal patterns based on two main characteristics in the coevolving EEG time series: namely, (i) dynamics via discovering temporal evolving behaviors, and (ii) correlations by identifying the relationships between multiple brain signals. From these exploits, the proposed method successfully identifies a few hidden variables and discovers their dynamics to impute missing values. The proposed method offers a robust and scalable approach with linear computation time over the size of sequences. A comparative study has been performed to assess the effectiveness of the proposed method against interpolation and missing values via Singular Value Decomposition (MSVD). The experimental simulations demonstrate that the proposed method provides better reconstruction performance up to 49% and 67% improvements over MSVD and interpolation approaches, respectively.
Images with high resolution are desired and often required in many visual applications. When resolution can not be improved by replacing sensors, either because of cost or hardware physical limits, super resolution image reconstruction method is what can be resorted to. Super resolution image reconstruction method refers to image processing algorithms that produce high quality and high resolution images from a set of low quality and low resolution images. The method is proved to be useful in many practical cases where multiple frames of the same scene can be obtained, including satellite imaging, video surveillance, video enhancement and restoration, digital mosaicking, and medical imaging. The method can be either the frequency domain approach or the spatial domain approach. Much of the earlier works concentrated on the frequency domain formulation, but as more general degradation models were considered, later researches had been almost exclusively on spatial domain formulations. The method in spatial domains has three stages: i) motion estimate or image registration, ii) interpolation onto high resolution grid and iii) deblurring process. The super resolution grid construction in the second stage was discussed in this paper. We applied the Maximum APosteriori(MAP) reconstruction method that is one of the major methods in the super resolution grid construction. Based on this method, we reconstructed high resolution images from a set of low resolution images and compared the results with those from other known interpolation methods.

The non-staggered(collocated) grid approach in which all the solution variables are located at the centers of control volumes is very popular for incompressible flow analyses because of its numerical efficiency on the curvilinear or unstructured grids. Rhie and Chow's paper is the first in using non-staggered grid method for SIMPLE algorithm, where pressure weighted interpolation was used to prevent decoupling of pressure and velocity. But it has been known that this non-staggered grid method has stability problems when pressure fields are nonlinear like in natural convection flows. Also Rhie-Chow scheme generates large numerical diffusion near curved walls. The cause of these unwanted problems is too large pressure damping term compared to the magnitude of face velocity. In this study the magnitude of pressure damping term of Rhie-Chow's method is limited to 1∼10% of face velocity to prevent physically unreasonable solutions. The wall pressure extrapolation which is necessary for cell-centered FVM is another source of numerical errors. Some methods are applied in a unstructured FV solver and analyzed in view of numerical accuracy. Here, two natural convection problems are solved to check the effect of the Rhie-Chow's method on numerical stability. And numerical diffusion from Rhie-Chow's method is studied by solving the inviscid flow around a circular cylinder.

This paper is dedicated to nonlinear static and free vibration analysis of Uniform Distributed Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Composite (UD-CNTRC) structures under in-plane loading. The authors have suggested an efficient six-node triangular element. Mixed Interpolation of Tensorial Components (MITC) approach is employed to alleviate the membrane locking phenomena. Moreover, the behavior of the well-known LST element is considerably improved by applying an additional linear interpolation on the strain fields. Based on the rule of mixture, the properties of CNTRC are obtained. In this study, only the uniform distributed CNTs are employed through the thickness direction of element. To achieve the natural frequencies and shape modes, the eigenvalue problem is also solved. Using Total Lagrangian Principles, large amplitude free vibration is considered based on the first normalized mode shape of structure. Different well-known plane problem benchmarks and some proposed ones are studied to validate the accuracy and capability of authors' formulations. In addition, the effects of length to the height ratio of beam, CNT's characteristics, support conditions and normalized amplitude parameter on the linear and nonlinear vibration parameters are investigated.

Kriging model is widely used as design analysis and computer experiment (DACE) model in the field of engineering design to accomplish computationally feasible design optimization. In general, kriging model has been applied to many engineering applications as an interpolation model because it is usually constructed from deterministic simulation responses. However, when the responses include not only global nonlinearity but also numerical error, it is not suitable to use Kriging model that can distort global behavior. In this research, generalized kriging model that can represent both interpolation and regression is proposed. The performances of generalized kriging model are compared with those of interpolating kriging model for numerical function with error of normal distribution type and trigonometric function type. As an application of the proposed approach, the response of a simple dynamic model with numerical integration error is predicted based on sampling data. It is verified that the generalized kriging model can predict a noisy response without distortion of its global behavior. In addition, the influences of maximum likelihood estimation to prediction performance are discussed for the dynamic model.
We analyze the characteristics of a coaxial-to-waveguide transition based on the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method with the cylindrical to rectangular cell interpolation scheme. The scheme presented in this paper is well suited for the analysis of a microwave device with a probe near waveguide discontinuity because perfect TEM mode can be generated inside the coaxial cable by using the cylindrical cell. The scattering parameters of a designed Ka-band transition are evaluated and compared with those of commercially available software, High Frequency Structure analysis Simulator (HFSS) and measured data. There exists good agreement between the measured and calculated data. In order to prove an accuracy of the interpolation scheme, a coaxial to waveguide transition with a disk-loaded probe is analyzed by the present approach and the results of this analysis are compared with measured data. Comparison shows that our results match very closely to those of measurement and other approaches. The method presented in this paper can be applied to analyze the characteristics of a probe excited cavity, coaxial waveguide T-Junctions, and so on.
