The interlayers, either softer or stiffer than the surrounding layers, are usually overlooked during field investigation due to the small thickness. They may be neglected through the analysis process for simplicity. However, they may significantly affect the dynamic behavior of the soil-foundation system. In this study, a series of 3D finite-element Direct-solution steady-state harmonic analyses were carried out using ABAQUS/CAE software to investigate the impacts of interlayers on the dynamic response of a cast in place pile group subjected to horizontal harmonic load. The experimental data of a 3×2 pile group testing was used to verify the numerical modeling. The effects of thickness, depth, and shear modulus of the interlayers on the dynamic response of the pile group are investigated. The simulations were conducted on both stiff and soft soils. It was found that the soft interlayers affect the frequency-amplitude curve of the system only in frequencies higher than 70% of the resonant frequency of the base soil. While, the effect of stiff interlayer in soft base soil started at frequency of 35% of the resonant frequency of the base soil. Also, it was observed that a shallow stiff interlayer increased the resonant amplitude by 11%, while a deep one only increased the resonant frequency by 7%. Moreover, a shallow soft interlayer increased the resonant frequency by 20% in soft base soils, whereas, it had an effect as low as 6% on resonant amplitude. Also, the results showed that deep soft interlayers increased the resonant amplitude by 17 to 20% in both soft and stiff base soils due to a reduction in lateral support of the piles. In the cases of deep thick, soft interlayers, the resonant frequency reduced significantly, i.e., 16 to 20%. It was found that the stiff interlayers were most effective on the amplitude and frequency of the pile group.
We present the effect of interlayers of polymer tandem solar cells on their photovoltaic performance. P-type and n-type interlayers are essential for the series-connection of the subcells and enable to form the tandem cell architecture by the solution processing. In this study, we use PEDOT:PSS, nanocrystalline $TiO_2$, and blends of semiconducting polymers and fullerene derivatives as a hole transporting layer, electron transporting layer, and photoactive layers, respectively. We show that photovoltaic performances of polymer tandem solar cells depending on various PEDOT:PSS layers with the different electric conductivity and the various $TiO_2$ layer thickness.
Landslides are often triggered by weak interlayers initiated in tailings dam foundations, and hazards gradually occur. This is serious for landslides in high tailings dams due to their high potential energy. Tailing samples with a fine-grained interlayer at a set dip angle were prepared. Consolidated undrained (CU) triaxial shear tests were carried out by using a high-pressure triaxial apparatus. The results were compared with the results under a low confining pressure. Four reasons were summarized for high tailings dams more prone to instability than low dams. The shear strength of the samples with dipping interlayers decreases with increasing dip angle. An obvious straight drop in the stress path after the peak occurs in samples with dipping interlayers at an angle of 60°. The effect of the interlayer on the mechanical behaviour of tailings is very sensitive, especially for the sample with a dipping interlayer at an angle of 60°. Shear slipping along the interlayer should be given more attention in tailings dams. Compared with the results under low confining pressure, the stress decreases continuously for the samples with dipping interlayers at large angles under high confining pressure. The positive pore pressure, which reduces the effective stress, occurred in tailings samples under high confining pressure. The residual strength of tailings under high confining pressure is smaller than that under low confining pressure. These factors increase the dam break risk and the disaster impact for high tailings dams.

Tungsten coatings with different interlayers onto the oxygen-free copper substrates were fabricated by atmosphere plasma spraying. The effects of different interlayers of NiCrAl, NiAl and W/Cu on bonding strength were studied. SEM, EDS and XRD were used to investigate the photographs and compositions of these coatings. The tungsten coatings with different initial particle sizes resulted in different microstructures. Oxidation was not detected in the tungsten coating, but in the interlayer, it was found by both XRD and EDS. The tungsten coating deposited directly onto the copper substrate presented higher bonding strength than those with different interlayers.
In this work, we introduce a solution-processed CdS interlayer for use in inverted bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells, and compare this material to a series of standard organic and inorganic cathode interlayers. Different combinations of solution-processed CdS, ZnO and conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) layers were compared as cathode interlayers on ITO substrates to construct inverted solar cells based on $PTB7:PC_{71}BM$ and a $P3HT:PC_{61}BM$ as photoactive layers. Introduction of a CdS interlayer significantly improved the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of inverted $PTB7:PC_{71}BM$ devices from 2.0% to 4.9%, however, this efficiency was still fairly low compared to benchmark ZnO or CPE interlayers due to a low open circuit voltage ($V_{OC}$), stemming from the deep conduction band energy of CdS. The $V_{OC}$ was greatly improved by introducing an interfacial dipole (CPE) layer on top of the CdS layer, yielding outstanding diode characteristics and a PCE of 6.8%. The best performing interlayer, however, was a single CPE layer alone, which yielded a $V_{OC}$ of 0.727 V, a FF of 63.2%, and a PCE of 7.89%. Using $P3HT:PC_{61}BM$ as an active layer, similar trends were observed. Solar cells without the cathode interlayer yielded a PCE of 0.46% with a poor $V_{OC}$ of 0.197 V and FF of 34.3%. In contrast, the use of hybrid ZnO/CPE layer as the cathode interlayer considerably improved the $V_{OC}$ of 0.599 V and FF of 53.3%, resulting the PCE of 2.99%. Our results indicate that the CdS layer yields excellent diode characteristics, however, performs slightly worse than benchmark ZnO and CPE layers in solar cell devices due to parasitic absorption below 550 nm. These results suggest that the hybrid inorganic/organic interlayer materials are promising candidates as cathode interlayers for high efficiency inverted solar cells through the modification of interface contacts.
R. F. magnetron sputtering법을 이용하여 Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si 기판 위에 $Pb_{1.1}Zr_{0.53}Ti_{0.47}O_3$ target을 사용하여 박막을 제조하였다. Interlayer(PbO, $TiO_2$, PbO/$TiO_2$)층을 삽입함으로써 박막의 결정성을 향상시켰고, 박막의 기판온도도 상당히 낮출 수 있었다.
We deposited epitaxial $Ba_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}TiO_{3}(BST)$ films having thickness of 400 nm on MgO(001) substrates, where a 10 nm thick $Ba_{1-x}Sr_{x}TiO_{3}$ (x = 0.1 - 0.7) interlayer was inserted between BST and MgO to manipulate the stress of the BST films. Since the main difference of those epitaxial BST films was the lattice constant of the interlayers, we were very successful in controlling the stress of the BST films. BST films under small tensile stress showed larger dielectric constant than that without stress as well as those under compressive stress. Stress relaxation was investigated using epitaxial BST films with various thicknesses grown on different interlayers. For BST films grown on $Ba_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}TiO_{3}$ interlayers, the critical thickness was about 600 nm. On the other hand, the critical thickness of single-layer BST film was less than 100 nm.
The effect of interlayer coating of Ni and Ti on corrosion behavior was studied in TiN ion plated steel plate. Interlayer coating was carried out in a single and bi-layer to a various thickness combination prior to final TiN coating of $2\mu\textrm{m}$. Corrosion behavior was evaluated by anodic polarization test in 1N H2SO4 as well as salt spray test. Porosity of each coating was also tested by using SO2 test. Corrosion resistance was improved with increasing the thickness of Ni interlayer coating and Ni-Ti interlayer coating markedly enhanced the corrosion resistance. Ni/Ti interlayer coating of $2\mu\textrm{m}$/2$\mu\textrm{m}$ prior to $2\mu\textrm{m}$ TiN coating decreased the corrosion current density of active range by an order of 4 and that of passive range by an order of 1. This improvement was associated with the retardation of corrosive agent penetration with increasing coating thickness and inherent corrosion resistance of Ni and Ti interlayers, Ni/Ti interlayers coating were also very effective in improvement of corrosion resistance under salt atmosphere.
The effects of interlayer formation and thermal treatment on the field-emission properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated. The CNTs were prepared on tungsten (W) micro-tip substrates using the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method. The interlayers, such as aluminum (Al) and hafnium (Hf) were coated on the W-tips prior to CNT deposition and after the deposition of CNTs all the species were thermally treated at $700^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The field-emission properties of CNTs were significantly improved by thermal treatment. The threshold electric field for igniting the electron emission was decreased and the emission current was increased. The Raman spectroscopy results indicated that this was attributed mainly to the enhancement of CNTs by thermal treatment. Also, the CNTs deposited on the interlayers showed the remarkably improved results in the long-term emission stability, especially when they were thermally treated. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement confirmed that this was resulted from the formation of the additional cohesive forces between the CNTs and the underlying interlayers.
