  • Ni germanide (NiGe) is a promising alloy material with small contact resistance at the source/drain (S/D) of Ge MOSFETs. However, it is necessary to reduce the specific contact resistance between NiGe and the doped Ge S/D region in high-performance MOSFETs. In this study, a novel method is proposed to reduce the specific contact resistance between NiGe and p-type Ge (p-Ge) using a Tb interlayer. The specific contact resistance between NiGe and p-Ge was successfully decreased with the introduction of the Tb interlayer. To investigate the mechanism behind the reduction in the specific contact resistance, the elemental distribution and crystalline structure of NiGe were analyzed using secondary ion mass spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. It is likely that the reduction in specific contact resistance was caused by an increase in the concentration of boron in the space between NiGe and p-Ge due to the influence of the Tb interlayer.

  • Landslides are often triggered by weak interlayers initiated in tailings dam foundations, and hazards gradually occur. This is serious for landslides in high tailings dams due to their high potential energy. Tailing samples with a fine-grained interlayer at a set dip angle were prepared. Consolidated undrained (CU) triaxial shear tests were carried out by using a high-pressure triaxial apparatus. The results were compared with the results under a low confining pressure. Four reasons were summarized for high tailings dams more prone to instability than low dams. The shear strength of the samples with dipping interlayers decreases with increasing dip angle. An obvious straight drop in the stress path after the peak occurs in samples with dipping interlayers at an angle of 60°. The effect of the interlayer on the mechanical behaviour of tailings is very sensitive, especially for the sample with a dipping interlayer at an angle of 60°. Shear slipping along the interlayer should be given more attention in tailings dams. Compared with the results under low confining pressure, the stress decreases continuously for the samples with dipping interlayers at large angles under high confining pressure. The positive pore pressure, which reduces the effective stress, occurred in tailings samples under high confining pressure. The residual strength of tailings under high confining pressure is smaller than that under low confining pressure. These factors increase the dam break risk and the disaster impact for high tailings dams.

  • The transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding was used to fabricate autogenous joints in a magnesium alloy AZ31 with the aid of a pure Ni interlayer. A $13{\mu}m$ thick pure Ni foil was used in order to form a Mg-Ni eutectic liquid at the joint interface. The interface of reaction and composition profiles were investigated as a function of bonding time using a pressure of 0.16 MPa and a bonding temperature of $515^{\circ}C$. The quality of the joints produced was examined by metallurgical characterization and the joint microstructure developed across the diffusion bonds was related to changes in mechanical properties as a function of the bonding time.

  • In this paper, the plane elasticity equations are used to investigate the in-plane normal (mode I) and shear (mode II) behavior of a crack perpendicular to and terminating at the interface in bonded media with a graded interfacial zone. The interfacial Bone is treated as a nonhomogeneous interlayer with the continuously varying elastic modulus between the two dissimilar, homogeneous semi-infinite constituents. For each of the individual loading modes, based on the Fourier integral transform technique, a singular integral equation with a Cauchy kernel is derived in a separate but parallel manner. In the numerical results, the values of corresponding modes of stress intensity factors are illustrated for various combinations of material and geometric parameters of the bonded media in conjunction with the effect of the material nonhomogeneity within the graded interfacial zone.

  • The bonding phenomena and mechanical property of duplex stainless steel during brazing have been investigated. The UNS32550 was used for base metal, and the MBF50 was used for insert metal. Brazing was carried out under the various conditions (brazing temperature : 1473K, 1498K, holding time : 0∼1.8ks). There were various microconstituents in the bonded interlayer because of reaction between liquid insert metal and base metal. In the early stage of brazing, BN is formed in the bonded interlayer and base metal near the bonded layer. Cr made is formed in the bonded interlayer. The amount of BN and Cr nitrides decrease with the increase of bonding temperature and holding time. Superior shear strength of 550MPa is obtained by restraining the formation of nitrides. • We report theoretical investigation on the polarization selective coupling characteristics of a side-polished fiber directional coupler with a thin metal interlayer. Based on normal mode theory the coupling properties of the device under various structural conditions are analyzed. It is shown that the coupling strength between TE modes weakens rapidly with increase or metal interlayer thickness, whereas that between TM modes becomes stronger. The design conditions of the polarization splitter using the coupler to achieve high extinction ratio and low insertion loss are presented.

  • Within the framework of anisotropic thermoelasticity, the problem of an interlaminar crack in a laminated fiber-reinforced composite subjected to a uniform heat flow is investigated. Under a state of generalized plane deformation, dissimilar anisotropic half-spaces with different fiber orientations are considered to be bound together by a matrix interlayer containing the crack. The interlayer models the matrix-rich interlaminar region of the fibrous composite laminate. Based on the flexibility/stiffness matrix approach, formulation of the current crack problem results in having to solve two sets of singular integral equations for temperature and thermal stress analyses. Numerical results are obtained, illustrating the parametric effects of laminate stacking sequence, relative crack size, crack location, crack surface partial insulation, and fiber volume fraction on the values of mixed mode thermal stress intensity factors.

  • Using the are ion plating(AIP) process, TiN coating was deposited onto high speed steel substrates. The effects of coating thickness, titanisum interlayer and shield on wear resisting capability of the coated tools were investigated. In order to promote good adhesion between the substrate and the TiN coating a thin Ti interlayer was deposited. A shield was set up also between Ti target and high speed steel substrates to prevent molten droplets from reaching the substrate. Three series of varying thickness of TiN coated layer were prepared with or without the Ti interlayer, and with or without the shield. The tools with the Ti layer and the shield showed longer tool lifes than those of other series of tools and the commercially available TiN coated HSS tools, by up to 70%.

  • Indium tin oxide (ITO) films with a 5 nm thick Au interlayer were prepared on glass substrates. The effects of the Au interlayer on the gas sensitivity for detecting methanol vapors were investigated at room temperature. The conductivity of the film sensor increased upon exposure to methanol vapor and the sensitivity also increased proportionally with the methanol vapor concentration. In terms of the sensitivity measurements, the ITO film sensor with an Au interlayer shows a higher sensitivity than that of the conventional ITO film sensor. This approach is promising in gaining improvement in the performance of ITO gas sensors used for the detection of methanol vapor at room temperature.

  • NiO thickness dependences of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in the $NiO/[CoFe/Pt]_5$ multilayers for exchange biasing and $[CoFe/Pt]_4/Pt/[CoFe/Pt]_4$ for interlayer exchange coupling were investigated. Perpendicular magnetization curve was obtained by out-of-plane extraordinary Hall measurement. Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) has been used for the investigation of magnetic domains on thin films. We confirmed that the interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) as a function of NiO thickness at room temperature existed with a period of two monolayers.
