Track-bridge interaction has become an essential part in the design of bridges and rails in terms of modern railways. As a unique ballastless slab track, the longitudinal continuous slab track (LCST) or referred to as the China railway track system Type-II (CRTS II) slab track, demonstrates a complex force mechanism. Therefore, a comprehensive track-bridge interaction study between multi-span simply supported beam bridges and the LCST is presented in this work. In specific, we have developed an integrated finite element model to investigate the overall interaction effects of the LCST-bridge system subjected to the actions of temperature changes, traffic loads, and braking forces. In that place, the deformation patterns of the track and bridge, and the distributions of longitudinal forces and the interfacial shear stress are studied. Our results show that the additional rail stress has been reduced under various loads and the rail's deformation has become much smoother after the transition of the two continuous structural layers of the LCST. However, the influence of the temperature difference of bridges is significant and cannot be ignored as this action can bend the bridge like the traffic load. The uniform temperature change causes the tensile stress of the concrete track structure and further induce cracks in them. Additionally, the influences of the friction coefficient of the sliding layer and the interfacial bond characteristics on the LCST's performance are discussed. The systematic study presented in this work may have some potential impacts on the understanding of the overall mechanical behavior of the LCST-bridge system.
The effects of aging time on the microstructure and shear strength of the Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC)/Ag pad/Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold (ENIG)/BGA solder joints were investigated through isothermal aging at $150^{\circ}C$ for 1000 h with conventional Sn-37Pb and Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu. $Ni_3Sn_4$ intermetallic compound (IMC) layers was formed at the interface between Sn-37Pb solder and LTCC substrate as-reflowed state, while $(Ni,Cu)_3Sn_4$ IMC layer was formed between Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu solder and LTCC substrate. Additional $(Cu,Ni)_6Sn_5$ layer was found at the interface between the $(Ni,Cu)_3Sn_4$ layer and Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu solder after aging at $150^{\circ}C$ for 500 h. Thickness of the IMC layers increased and coarsened with increasing aging time. Shear strength of both solder joints increased with increasing aging time. Failure mode of BGA solder joints with LTCC substrate after shear testing revealed that shear strength of the joints depended on the adhesion between Ag metallization and LTCC. Fracture mechanism of Sn-37Pb solder joint was a mixture of ductile and pad lift, while that of Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu solder joint was a mixture of ductile and brittle $(Ni,Cu)_3Sn_4$ IMC fracture morphology. Failure mechanisms of LTCC/Ag pad/ENIG/BGA solder joints were also interpreted by finite element analyses.
Recent development in composites containing phase-transforming particles, such as vanadium dioxide or barium titanate, reveals the overall stiffness and viscoelastic damping of the composites may be unbounded (Lakes et al. 2001, Jaglinski et al. 2007). Negative stiffness is induced from phase transformation predicted by the Landau phase transformation theory. Although this unbounded phenomenon is theoretically supported with the composite homogenization theory, detailed stress analyses of the composites are still lacking. In this work, we analyze the stress distribution of the Hashin-Shtrikman (HS) composite and its two-dimensional variant, namely a circular inclusion in a square plate, under the assumption that the Young's modulus of the inclusion is negative. Assumption of negative stiffness is a priori in the present analysis. For stress analysis, a closed form solution for the HS model and finite element solutions for the 2D composite are presented. A static loading condition is adopted to estimate the effective modulus of the composites by the ratio of stress to average strain on the loading edges. It is found that the interfacial stresses between the circular inclusion and matrix increase dramatically when the negative stiffness is so tuned that overall stiffness is unbounded. Furthermore, it is found that stress distributions in the inclusion are not uniform, contrary to Eshelby's theorem, which states, for two-phase, infinite composites, the inclusion's stress distribution is uniform when the shape of the inclusion has higher symmetry than an ellipse. The stability of the composites is discussed from the viewpoint of deterioration of perfect interface conditions due to excessive interfacial stresses.

Sn-58Bi-xRu composite solders were prepared by adding Ru nanoparticles to Sn-58Bi, a typical low-temperature solder, and the interfacial reaction and solder joint reliability were analyzed by reacting with Cu/OSP and ENIG surface treated PCB boards. The Cu6Sn5 IMC formed by the reaction with Cu/OSP had little change in thickness depending on the Ru content, and ductile fracture occurred inside the solder during the high-speed shear test without any significant change even after 100 hr aging. In reaction with ENIG, the Ni3Sn4 IMC thickness tended to decrease as the Ru content increased, and ENIG-specific brittle fracture was found in some specimens. Since Ru element is not found near the interface, it is judged not to be significantly involved in the interfacial reaction, and it is analyzed that it mainly exists together with the Bi phase.

Composite beams, two materials joined together, have become more common in structural engineering over the past few decades because they have better mechanical and structural properties. The shear connectors between their layers exhibit some deformability with finite stiffness, resulting in interfacial shear slip, a phenomenon known as partial shear interaction. Such a partial shear interaction contributes significantly to the composite beams. To provide precise predictions of the geometric nonlinear behavior shown by two-layered composite beams with interfacial shear slips, a robust analytical model has been developed that incorporates the influence of significant displacements. The application of a higher-order beam theory to the two material layers results in a third-order adjustment of the longitudinal displacement within each layer along the depth of the beam. Deformable shear connectors are employed at the interface to represent the partial shear interaction by means of a sequence of shear connectors that are evenly distributed throughout the beam's length. The Von-Karman theory of large deflection incorporates geometric nonlinearity into the governing equations, which are then solved analytically using the Navier solution technique. Suggested model exhibits a notable level of agreement with published findings, and numerical outputs derived from finite element (FE) model. Large displacement substantially reduces deflection, interfacial shear slip, and stress values. Geometric nonlinearity has a significant impact on beams with larger span-to-depth ratio and a greater degree of shear connector deformability. Potentially, the analytical model can accurately predict the geometric nonlinear responses of composite beams. The model has a high degree of generality, which might aid in the numerical solution of composite beams with varying configurations and shear criteria.
The main objective of this study is to examine the sensitivity of calibration curves of FEA of ring compression test to frictional shear factor. Ring compression test has been investigated by measuring dimensional changes at different positions of ring specimen and they include the changes in internal diameter at the middle and top section of the specimen, outer diameter at the middle and top section, surface expansion at the top surface, respectively. Initial ring geometries employed in analysis maintain a fixed ratio of 6 : 3 : 2, i.e. outer diameter : inner diameter : thickness of the ring specimen, which is generally known as 'standard' specimen. A rigid plastic material for different work-hardening characteristics has been modeled for simulations using rigid-plastic finite element code. Analyses have been performed within a definite range of friction as well as over whole range of friction to show different sensitivities to the interfacial friction for different ranges of friction. The results of investigation in this study have been summarized in terms of a dimensionless gradient. It has been known from the results that the dimensional changes at different positions of ring specimen show different linearity and sensitivity to the frictional condition on the contact surface.

Mechanical behaviors of uniaxially fiber-reinforced metal matrix composites under transverse loading conditions were studied at room and elevated temperatures. A mono-filament composite was selecte d as a representative analysis model with perfectly bonded fiber/matrix interface assumption. The elastic-plastic and visco-plastic models were investigated by both theoretical and numerical methods. The product of triaxiality factor and effective strain as well as stress components and strain energy was obtained as a function of location to estimate the failure sites in fiber-reinforced metal matrix composite. Results showed that fiber/ matrix interfacial debond plays a key role for local failure at the room temperature, while void creation and growth in addition to the interfacial debond are major concerns at the elevated temperature. It was also shown that there would be an optimal diameter of fiber for the strong fiber-reinforced metal matrix composite.

In discontinuous composite mechanics, shear lag theory is one of the most popular model because of its simplicity and accuracy. However, it does not provide sufficiently accurate strengthening predictions in elastic regime then the fiber aspect ratio is small. This is due to its neglect of stress transfer across the fiber ends and the stress concentrations that exist in the matrix regions near the fiber ends. To overcome this shortcoming, a more simplified shear lag model introducing the stress concentration factor which is a function of several variables, such as the modulus ratio, the fiber volume fraction, the fiber aspect ratio, is proposed. It is found that the modulus ratio($E_f$/$E_m$) is the essential variable among them. Thus, the stress concentration factor is expressed as a function of modulus ratio in the derivation. It is found that the proposed model gives a good agreement with finite element results and has the capability to correctly predict the values of interfacial shear stresses and local stress variations in the small fiber aspect ratio regime.

The dissolution and precipitation of Nb, which has been known as strong carbide-forming element, play a key role in controlling phase transformation kinetics of microalloyed steels. In this study, we analyzed both numerically and experimentally the precipitation behavior of Nb-microalloyed steel and its effect on the austenite decomposition during cooling. Nb precipitation in austenite matrix could be predicted by the thermo-kinetic software MatCalc, in which interfacial energy between precipitate and matrix is calculated. The simulated precipitation kinetics fairly well agrees with the experimental observations by TEM. Austenite decomposition, which is strongly affected by Nb precipitation during cooling, was measured by dilatometry and was modeled on the basis of a Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmorgorov(JMAK) equation. It was confirmed that the dissolved Nb delays the austenite decomposition, whereas, the precipitated Nb accelerates phase transformation during the austenite decomposition.
Unidirectional fiber-metal matrix composites have superior mechanical properties along the longitudinal direction. However, the applicability of continuous fiber reinforced MMCs is somewhat limited due to their relatively poor transverse properties. Therefore, the transverse properties of MMCs are significantly influenced by the properties of the fiber/matrix interface. In this study, the interfacial stress states of transversely loaded unidirectional fiber reinforced metal matrix composites investigated by using elastic-plastic finite element analysis. Different fiber volume fractions $(5-60\%)$ were studied numerically. The interface was treated as thin layer (with different properties) with a finite thickness between the fiber and the matrix. The fiber is modeled as transversely isotropic linear-elastic, and the matrix as isotropic elastic-plastic material. The analyses were based on a two-dimensional generalized plane strain model of a cross-section of an unidirectional composite by the ANSYS finite element analysis code.
