  • Uniaxial compression tests were conducted on sandstone-CGFB composite samples with different interface angles, and their strength, acoustic emission (AE), and failure characteristics were investigated. Three macro-failure patterns were identified: the splitting failure accompanied by local spalling failure in CGFB (Type-I), the mixed failure with small sliding failure along with the interface and Type-I failure (Type-II), and the sliding failure along with the interface (Type-III). With an increase of interface angle β measured horizontally, the macro-failure pattern changed from Type-I to Type-II, and then to Type-III, and the uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus generally decreased. Due to the small sliding failure along with the interface in the composite sample with β of 45°, AE events underwent fluctuations in peak values at the later post-peak failure stage. The composite samples with β of 60° occurred Type-III failure before the completion of initial compaction stage, and the post-peak stress-time curve initially exhibited a slow decrease, followed by a steep linear drop with peaks in AE events.

  • The internal crack propagation, the failure mode and ultimate load bearing capacity of the steel-concrete-steel composite beam under the four-point-bend loading is investigated by the numerical simulation. The results of load - displacement curve and failure mode are in good agreement with experiment. In order to study the failure mechanism, the composite beam has been modeled, which part interface interaction between steel and concrete is considered. The results indicate that there are two failure modes: (a) When the strength of the interface is lower than that of the concrete, failure happens at the interface of steel and concrete; (b) When the strength of the interface is higher than that of the concrete, the failure modes is cohesion failure, i.e., and concrete are stripped because of the shear cracks at concrete edge.

  • In order to understand the shear mechanical properties of the interface between clay and structure and better serve the practical engineering projects, it is critical to conduct shear tests on the clay-structure interface. In this work, the direct shear test of clay-concrete slab with different joint roughness coefficient (JRC) of the interface and different normal stress is performed in the laboratory. Our experimental results show that (1) shear strength of the interface between clay and structure is greatly affected by the change of normal stress under the same condition of JRC and shear stress of the interface gradually increases with increasing normal stress; (2) there is a critical value JRCcr in the roughness coefficient of the interface; (3) the relationship between shear strength and normal stress can be described by the Mohr Coulomb failure criterion, and the cohesion and friction angle of the interface under different roughness conditions can be calculated accordingly. We find that there also exists a critical value JRCcr for cohesion and the cohesion of the interface increases first and then decreases as JRC increases. Moreover, the friction angle of the interface fluctuates with the change of JRC and it is always smaller than the internal friction angle of clay used in this experiment; (4) the failure type of the interface of the clay-concrete slab is type I sliding failure and does not change with varying JRC when the normal stress is small enough. When the normal stress increases to a certain extent, the failure type of the interface will gradually change from shear failure to type II sliding failure with the increment of JRC.

  • There is an increasing demand for using rock anchors as foundations in many geotechnical engineering structures such as transmission towers, dams, etc. For investigate the behavior and strength of rock anchors, in-situ pull-out tests were carried out. From the tests, various forms of failure of rock anchors were observed. Ultimate capacity of each failure modes of 1) Tendon failure, 2) Interface failure(tendon-grout interface, sheath-grout interface and grout-rock interface), 3) Combined interface failure, was obtained by varying the parameters such as diameter and length of tendon, grout strength, and quality of rock.

  • The roughness of substrate concrete interfaces before new concrete placement has a major effect on the interface bond behaviour. However, there are challenges associated with the consistency of the final roughness interface prepared using conventional roughness preparation methods which influences the interface bond performance. In this study, five quantitative interface roughness textures with different roughness tooth angles, depths, and tooth distribution were created to ensure consistency of interface roughness and to evaluate the bond behaviour at a precast and new concrete interface using the splitting tensile test, slant shear test, and double-shear test. In addition, smooth interface specimens and two separate the pitting interface roughness were also utilized. Obtained results indicate that the quantitative roughness has a very limited effect on the interface tensile bond strength if no extra micro-roughness or bonding agent is added at the interface. The roughness method however causes enhanced shear bond strength at the interface. Increased tooth depth improved both the tensile and shear bond strength of the interfaces, while the tooth distribution mainly influenced the shear bond strength. Major failure modes of the test specimens include interface failure, splitting cracks, and sliding failure, and are influenced by the tooth depth and tooth distribution. Furthermore, the interface properties were obtained and presented while a comparison between the different testing methods, in terms of bond strength, was performed.

  • Cu/PET composite films are widely used in a variety of wearable electronics. Lifetime of the electronics is determined by adhesion between the Cu film and the PET substrate. The formation of an anisotropic nanostructure on the PET surface by surface modification can enhance Cu/PET interfacial adhesion. The shape and size of the anisotropic nanostructures of the PET surface can be controlled by varying the surface modification conditions. In this work, the effect of Cu/PET interface nanostructures on the failure mechanism of a Cu/PET flexible composite film is studied. From observation of the morphologies of the anisotropic nanostructures on plasma-treated PET surfaces, and cross-sections and surfaces of the fractured specimens, the Cu/PET interface area and nanostructure width are analyzed and the failure mechanism of the Cu/PET film is investigated. It is found that the failure mechanism of the Cu/PET flexible composite film depends on the shape and size of the plasmatreated PET surface nanostructures. Cu/PET interface nanostructures with maximal peel strength exhibit multiple craze-crack propagation behavior, while smaller or larger interface nanostructures exhibit single-path craze-crack propagation behavior.

  • In this study, the failure behavior of composite material in the biaxial and off-axis loading is studied based on a computational micromechanical model. The model is developed so that the combination of mechanical and thermal loading conditions can be considered in the analysis. The modified generalized plane strain assumption of the theory of elasticity is used for formulation of the micromechanical modeling of the problem. A truly meshless method is employed to solve the governing equation and predict the distribution of micro-stresses in the selected RVE of composite. The fiber matrix interface is assumed to be perfect until the interface failure occurs. The biaxial and off-axis loading of the SiC/Ti and Kevlar/Epoxy composite is studied. The failure envelopes of SiC/Ti and Kevlar/Epoxy composite in off-axis loading, biaxial transverse-transverse and axial-transverse loading are predicted based on the micromechanical approach. Various failure criteria are considered for fiber, matrix and fiber-matrix interface. Comparison of results with the available results in the litreture shows excellent agreement with experimental studies.

  • The strengthening of reinforced concrete structures by externally bonded GFRP has become increasingly common in resent years. However the analysis and design method for GFRP plate strengthening of RC beams is not well established yet. The purpose of present paper is, therefore, to define the failure mechanism and failure behavior of strengthened RC beam using GFRP and then to propose a resonable method for the calculation of interface debonding load for those beams. From the experimental results of beams strengthened by GFRP, the influence of length and thickness, width of plate on the interfacial debonding failure behavior of beam is studied and, on the basis of test results, the semi-empirical equation to predict debonding load is developed. The proposed theory based on nonlinear analysis and critical flexural crack width, predicts relatively well the debonding failure load of test beams and may be efficiently used in the analysis and design of strengthened RC beams using GFRP.

  • In this paper we analyzed a dangerous failure and a safety requirement based on HIA (Hazard Identification and Analysis) of an interface model between CTC (Centralized Traffic Control) system and El (Interlocking) system, and assigned SU (Safety Integrity Level) by way of an risk estimation of the interface, which employed PHA (Preliminary Hazard Analysis) for the interface of the track control system, being managed as separated system between the centralized traffic control system and the interlocking system, An estimation which satisfies a safety reference of the international standard has been achieved through a quantification of the system failure rate and the dangerous failure rate of the interface model.
