  • Compared with traditional video monitoring systems that provide a video-recording function as a main service, an intelligent video monitoring system is capable of extracting/tracking objects and detecting events such as car accidents, traffic congestion, pedestrian detection, and so on. Thus, the object tracking is an essential function for various intelligent video monitoring and surveillance systems. In this paper, we propose a background and local histogram-based object tracking approach for intelligent video monitoring systems. For robust object tracking in a live situation, the result of optical flow and local histogram verification are combined with the result of background subtraction. In the proposed approach, local histogram verification allows the system to track target objects more reliably when the local histogram of LK position is not similar to the previous histogram. Experimental results are provided to show the proposed tracking algorithm is robust in object occlusion and scale change situation.

  • The Intelligent Space(ISpace) provides challenging research fields for surveillance, human-computer interfacing, networked camera conferencing, industrial monitoring or service and training applications. ISpace is the space where many intelligent devices, such as computers and sensors, are distributed. According to the cooperation of many intelligent devices, the environment, it is very important that the system knows the location information to offer the useful services. In order to achieve these goals, we present a method for representing, tracking and human following by fusing distributed multiple vision systems in ISpace, with application to pedestrian tracking in a crowd.

  • Though conventional video surveillance systems such as CCTV depended on operators, recently developed intelligent surveillance systems no longer needed operators. However, these new intelligent surveillance systems have their own problems such as Occlusion, changing scale of target object, and affine. This paper handled information damage caused by changing the scale of the target object among other objects. Due to the change of the scale, the inaccurate information of target can be obtained when we update the background information. To handle this problem, we introduce a solution for information damage caused by problem of changing scale of target object located among other objects. Specifically, we suggest multi-stage sampling particle filter based advanced MSER for object tracking system. Through this method, the problem caused by changing scale of target can be avoided.

  • Urban transit administers need to introduce the intelligent system to know the situations in the urban transit service area automatically. It is one of the important elements to detect of intrusion in operation room or electric rooms, etc. In this paper, we describe the definition for detection of intrusion in urban transit area, and propose the context-awareness model detect of intrusion. We expect that the definition is helpful to extract the elements that are need to construct the intrusion detecting system. The proposed model that is based on an image analysis model and a rule-based model is also helpful to design intelligent surveillance model.

  • Recently, the rising demand for intelligent video surveillance system leads to high-performance face recognition systems. The solution for low-resolution images acquired by a long-distance camera is required to overcome the distance limits of the existing face recognition systems. For that reason, this paper proposes a hardware design of an image resolution enhancement algorithm for real-time intelligent video surveillance systems. The algorithm is synthesizing a high-resolution face image from an input low-resolution image, with the help of a large collection of other high-resolution face images, called training set. When we checked the performance of the algorithm at 32bit RISC micro-processor, the entire operation took about 25 sec, which is inappropriate for real-time target applications. Based on the result, we implemented the hardware module and verified it using Xilinx Virtex-4 and ARM9-based embedded processor(S3C2440A). The designed hardware can complete the whole operation within 33 msec, so it can deal with 30 frames per second. We expect that the proposed hardware could be one of the solutions not only for real-time processing at the embedded environment, but also for an easy integration with existing face recognition system.

  • Tracking is a fundamental technique which is able to be applied to gesture recognition, visual surveillance, tangible agent and so forth. Especially, multiple object tracking has been extensively studied in recent years in order to perform many and more complicated tasks. In this paper, we propose a new approach of multiple object tracking which is based on discrete event. We call this system the DEMOT (Discrete Event based Multiple Object Tracking). This approach is based on the fact that a multiple object tracking can have just four situations - initiation, continuation, termination, and overlapping. Here, initiation, continuation, termination, and overlapping constitute a primary event set and this is based on the change of the number of extracted objects between a previous frame and a current frame. This system reduces computational costs and holds down the identity of all targets. We make experiments for this system with respect to the number of targets, each event, and processing period. We describe experimental results that show the successful multiple object tracking by using our approach.

  • Nowadays it is required to design intelligent visual surveillance systems which automatically detect abandoned objects in public places to strengthen the social safety. Already recognized abandoned objects can be occluded partially or fully by surrounding people in public places after the first recognition. To improve an essential recognition performance index PAT, the system should overcome the occlusion problems. In this research, a design scheme is newly proposed to construct the robust detection system which is comprised of multiple stages considering the occlusion problem. To show the feasibilities of the proposed system, the evaluation was tried for the prepared image streams including 6 various situations and the experimental results show 96% and 75% in PAT performance for intrusion and abandoning events, respectively. Finally in spite of full occlusions by multiple persons, the proposed system shows the capability to continuously recognize the abandoned object after complex occlusions disappear.

  • The stability of object tracking in non-stationary camera environment, such as intelligent surveillance system using a pan/tilt camera, is less stable compared with stationary camera environment. This is due to the fact that it is difficult to model a background image in non-stationary environment. In this letter, we propose a non-stationay pan/tilt camera surveillance system which uses a stop/go procedure together with a real-time active contour. The proposed system can track the object stable even in an environment where only a few difference frames can be obtained.

  • This paper presents abnormal behavior detection in crowd within surveillance video. We have defined below two cases as a abnormal behavior; first as a sporadically spread phenomenon and second as a sudden running in same direction. In order to detect these two abnormal behaviors, we first extract the motion vector and propose a new descriptor which is combined MHOF(Multi-scale Histogram of Optical Flow) and DCHOF(Directional Change Histogram of Optical Flow). Also, binary classifier SVM(Support Vector Machine) is used for detection. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by both UMN and PETS 2009 dataset and comparisons with the state-of-the-art method validate the advantages of our algorithm.

  • Intelligent video surveillance systems have been developed to monitor global areas and find specific target objects using a large-scale database. However, person re-identification presents some challenges, such as pose change and occlusions. To solve the problems, this paper presents an improved person re-identification method using sparse representation and saliency-based dictionary construction. The proposed method consists of three parts: i) feature description based on salient colors and textures for dictionary elements, ii) orthogonal atom selection using cosine similarity to deal with pose and viewpoint change, and iii) measurement of reconstruction error to rank the gallery corresponding a probe object. The proposed method provides good performance, since robust descriptors used as a dictionary atom are generated by weighting some salient features, and dictionary atoms are selected by reducing excessive redundancy causing low accuracy. Therefore, the proposed method can be applied in a large scale-database surveillance system to search for a specific object.
