To clarify the effect of anti-juvenile hormone analogue (AJH) on the larval ecdysis by feeding at early stage of the 4th instar, the total amount of protein and activity of chitinolytic enzymes in the integument of Bombyx mori were analyzed, PAGE pattern of the protein was observed and the morphological changes of integument during molting period were also observed and the morphological changes of integument during molting period were also observed by means of TEM. The total amount of protein was greatly increased in premolting, then reached maximum level just before ecdysis, and rapidly decreased after the larval ecdysis in the control, while in the AJH treatment, increased 12 hr later than the control and its maximum was only 82.6% of the control. Two specific proteins, which were presumed as the protein originated from endocuticle, also appeared 12 hr later than the control and were maintained to 132 hr after AJH treatment from the aspects of the Native- and SDS-PAGE patterns, although those of the control disappeared instantly after ecdysis. Chitinase and $\beta$-N-acetylglucosaminidase activities were also suppressed and delayed by AJH treatment. Furthermore, it was observed that the apolysis took place 12 hr later than the control but new epicuticle was not formed at least until 132 hr after AJH treatment. From these results, it is suggested that the larval molting process of silkworm develops 12 hr later than the control but new epicuticle was not formed at least until 132 hr after AJH treatment. From these results, it is suggested that the larval molting process of silkworm develops 12 hr later than the control by AJH treatment but no further processing takes place just after apolysis.

Differences in carotenoid composition in the integument of Korean bittering, Cheilognathus signifer and bride bittering, Rhodeus ukekii which are Korean native fresh water fish were compared. Total ca rotenoid contents in the integument of wild Korean bittering was 2.11mg% and composed of 42.6% zeaxanthin, 12.1% diatoxanthin and 12.1% lutein epoxide which are predominant carotenoids and 10.3% cynthiaxanthin, 8.3% zeaxanthin epoxide, 6.4% lutein and 1.5% cryptoxanthin which are minor carotenoids. Total ca rotenoid contents in the integument of wild bride bittering was 4.99mg% during a spawning period but after the spawning period it was decreased to 4.17mg% and carotenoid composition of bride bittering during the spawning period was 46.7% zeaxanthin, 26.5% diatoxanthin and 12.3% lutein which are predominant carotenoids, and 6.2% zeaxanthin epoxide, 3.1% cynthiaxanthin, 2.9% cryptoxanthin and 0.7% canthax anthin which are minor carotenoids. These results indicated that the carotenoid composition of bride bittering during spawning period was very similar to that of Korean bittering and carotenoid composition of bride bittering after the spawning period was 30.5% diatoxanthin, 21.5% cynthiaxanthin and 16.8% zeaxanthin which are predominant carotenoids and 14.0% cryptoxanthin, 11.3% lutein and 3.4% can thaxanthin which are minor carotenoids, indicating that after the spawning period, the content of zeaxanthin was decreased while that of cryptoxanthin and cynthiaxanthin was increased as compared to that of the spawning period. Total carotenoid contents in Korean bittering and bride bittering was relatively higher than that in other species of cyprinidae whereas composition of the carotenoid was similar.
The present study was focussed to assess the proliferating cells in the distal epiphyseal tissue of the chicken femur by immunohistochemical staining methods. Four chickens were administrated intraperitoneally by twice consecutive injections, 1 day interval with bromodeoxyuridine(Brdur, 0.05 mg/gm BW/time), and then were killed by exsanguination of jugular vein at 2 hours after last injection. Samples were taken from femur distal epiphyseas of chicken. Labeling indexes(LI) were calculated as the ratio of the number of anti-Brdur monoclonal antibody-labeled cells in the each tissue layers from basal layer of the integument to bone marrow. The overall LI were found to be $13.90{\pm}3.44%$, $30.03{\pm}7.52%$, $16.00{\pm}9.41%$, $0.00{\pm}0.00%$ and $60.03{\pm}13.39%$ at basal layer of integument, perichordrium, reseving zone in cartilage, hypertrophic zone in cartilage and bone marrow respectively. LI in proliferating zone of cartilage were found to be $36.99{\pm}7.59%$, $32.83{\pm}5.38%$ and $22.02{\pm}6.27%$ at reserving zone side region, middle region, and hypertrophic zone side region respectively. The tissue layers with higher LI were odered as bone marrow, reserving zone side region in proliferating zone, middle region in proliferating zone, perichondrium, hypertrophic zone side region in proliferating zone. reserving zone of cartilage and basal layer of integument. These data indicate that the overall LI in the each tissue layer of distal epiphyseas of the chicken femur were concluded to be higher than that in another tissue of adult birds but hypertrophic zone of cartlage were appeared to be not proliferating cells.

This study describes the light microscopical cell types and histochemical characteristics as a preliminary study for the research on integument of the walleye pollock Gadus chalcogrammus in accordance with the physiological and environmental changes. The lateral line of the integument surface showed a curve in the anterior part and was straight from the middle to the posterior part. Integument is composed of outer epidermis and inner dermis. The epidermis is a stratified layer composed of epithelial cells, mucous cells, and club cells. Epithelial cells are classified into squamous superficial cell, cuboidal intermediated cell and columnar basal cell. The thickness of epidermis was 122.9 ㎛, and the ratio of epidermis thickness to body length was 0.03%. The mucous cell and club cell of unicellular gland were mainly distributed in the apical and middle layer of epidermis. The mucous cell contained mucosal materials of acidic glycoprotein. The proportion of mucous cells and club cells were 21.3 (± 7.0)% and 4.0 (± 1.0)% of epidermal area, respectively. The dermis was dense connective tissue layer and composed of mainly collagen fibers. It also contained fibrocytes, blood vessels, melanophores and scales.
Structure and differentiation mechanism of the seed coat of Panax ginseng are studied with light and electron microscopes to clarify the developmental processes of seed coat and the structural changes during the differentiation of the seed. The seed coat of ginseng is differentiated from the inner cell layers of ovary wall, which can be compared with the seed coat differentiated from integument(s) in other plants. The single integument is differentiated into endothelium, which is degenerated to one layer of 4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in thickness, composed of remants of cell wall components in fully ripened seed. The ripened seed coat is composed of three layers; fringe layer, inner layer and palisade layer, and all of the them are crossed at right angles with one another. This may be the cause of protection of the kernel from other mechanical injuries. The thickness of fully ripened seed coat is about 300~600 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and arrangements of sclereids are irregular. However, the raphe region of seed coat is thin about 200 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in thickness and sclereids in that region are arranged regularly. This is the important cause for the cleavage of the seed coat during post-maturation process. The vascular bundles on the raphe are still remaining after sarcocarps are removed, and one of the branches of vascular bundles entered into the seed coat through the hilum and extended to chalazal region. During post-maturation process, the supply of water being necessary for growth of embryo may be accompolished by the vascular bundles entered into the seed coat through the opened hilum.

Capillaria hepatica is a parasitic nematode which causes hepatic capillariasis in rodents and other mammals, including man. Rat species of the genus Rattus are main primary host and rates of genus Rattus of up to 100% have been reported. Infection to reservoir and other mammalian hosts occur incidentally due to ingestion of water or food contaminated with C. hepatica embryonated eggs. The worms mature exclusively inside the liver, but they die and disassemble soon after egg spawning in rats. Dead worms and their eggs cause immune response of focal necrosis and inflammation within the liver. C. hepatica adult with a thin and long body is similar to capillary. The members of Order Trichurida are characterized by having a stichosome and the bacillary bands in front of the body. As already mentioned, the adult C. hepatica residesin the liver, where it deposits groups of eggs, and finally die in the encapsulated tissue of the liver. They produce eggs that elicit a marked granulomatous reaction that eventually destroy the worms. And the adult worms were mixed with eggs. So the complete isolation of the worm and observation of intact ultrastructure is very difficult. In this study, integument structure of C. hepatica isolated from the liver of mouse at 7 weeks after inoculation of embryonated eggs were observed with scanning and transmission electron microscopy. As a results, body length of isolated C. hepatica was about 99 mm. Cuticle, bacillary band and bacillary pore were obtained in the integument of worm. Bacillary pore across cuticular surface of the worm were observed. According to the existence of cap material, external forms of bacillary pore can be divided into three types such as flat, ingression, and ingression with the cap material type. The complete isolation of the worm and observation of ultrastructure of integument will provide the fundamental data which is important in the nematode research including C. hepatica.
Large quantities of an ascidian, Styela plicata, are harvested annually as the by-product of oyster culture on the south coastal area in Korea. It has been traditionally favored and consumed because of its peculiar taste and flavor. But no study on its taste compounds has been reported. An investigation on the taste compounds of fresh meat and integument of an ascidian has been carried out by a series of analysis of taste compounds including nucleotides, free amino acids, betaine, TMAO, TMA and total creatinine. The most abundant nucleotides in fresh meat were AMP and IMP. Their contents were $1.2\;and\;0.8{\mu}mole/g$, respectively. The contents of nucleotides and their related compounds in integument show similar tendency as in fresh meat but their quantities were very low as compared with those in fresh meat. Seventy two percentage of the total free amino acids in fresh meat was consisted of proline, alanine, glutamic acid, glycine and serine. They occupied also 82% of the total free amino acids in integument, but the amount of free amino acids in integument was about 1/10 of that in fresh meat. The contents of betaine-N and creatinine-N were 6.1 and 2.1% of the extractive-N in fresh meat, respectively. The amounts of TMAO-N and TMA-N were very low contents in fresh meat and trace in integument.
This study was performed as a part of comparative biological studies of carotenoid pigment for the unutilized biological products. The content of total carotenoid in the integument of wild catfish were 0.27(${\pm}$0.7) mg% and composed of 25.8% zeaxanthin, 9.7% diatoxanthin and 9.1 % cynthiaxanthin as major carotenoid. The content of total carotenoid in the integument of cultured catfish were 0.07(${\pm}$0.03) mg% which is relatively lower compare to wild catfish and composed of 48.5% lutein, 13.9% zeaxanthin and 13.3% isocryptoxanthin as major carotenoid. The total carotenoid contents of the slender catfish were 0.75(${\pm}$0.25) mg% which is relatively higher compare to other species of catfishes. The carotenoids were composed of 24.5% zeaxanthin, 24.1 % 7'8'-dihydro-${\beta}$-carotene-4-ol, 17.9% 7'8'-dihydro-${\beta}$-carotene and 10.8% 7'8'-dihydro-${\beta}$-carotene-3-01 as major carotenoid and 8.7% diatoxanthin, 6.7% cynthiaxanthin and 5.0% lutein as minor carotenoid. Based on these data, as a comparative studies of carotenoid in integument of siluridae, parasiloxanthin and 7',8'-dihydroparasiloxanthin which are the characteristic carotenoid of catfish from biwa lake in Japan, Slender catfish contained more based on 7',8'-dihydro-${\beta}$-carotene while that of wild and cultured catfishes were not found, indicating that carotenoid pigment of slender catfish depend on their living conditions.

The fine structures and histochemical features on the integumentary system of the grass puffer, Takifugu niphobles were examined by means of the light and transmission electron microscopy. Integumentary surface of the grass puffer showed irregular folds in light microscope. The folds of the ventral region are more pronounced than those in the dorsal region. Integumentary system is composed of outer epidermal layer and inner dermal layer. The stratified epidermal layer consists of epithelia, mucous cells, club cells, granular cells and multivacuolar gland. Epithelial cells are classified into superficial, intermediated and basal cell, and free surface of superficial cell is covered with microridges. Glands of the epidermal layer are divided into unicellular and multicellular gland. Mucous cells of multicellular gland contains mucosal materials of neutral glycoprotein. Multivacuolar gland is composed of numerous vacuole cells of about $20{\mu}m$ in axial diameter. Vacuole cells contains a large central vacuole and are connected to another by many desmosomes. The mucous glands and multivacuolar glands are more abundant in ventral region than dorsal integument. The thickness of dermis is more three to five times than epidermis in ventral integument. The collagen fibers, fibrocytes, nerve cells, basal plate of spine and chromatophore are observed in the dermal layer of compact connective tissue.
In this study, we studied the effect of dissolved cement powder on Carassius auratus by analysis of the morphophysiological changes. The gill exposed to dissolved cement powder showed the thickened primary lamellae and the activity of chloride cells and mucous cells was also significantly increased and the proliferation, separation and clubbing of gill filament was observed in the secondary lamellae. In the kidney tissue, the space in Bowman's capsule was widen and the arrangement of dermis was irregular due to the thinned epidermis in the integument tissue. The activities of antioxidant enzymes and LDH tended to increase with the duration of cement exposure. It was confirmed that the up-regulated proteins were identified as involved in glycolysis and energy metabolism and down-regulated proteins were myofibrillar proteins which were involved in muscle contraction by the cement exposure to the integument. With these results, dissolved cement powder was thought to be a big threat to the survival of the fish because it causes the morphological changes and weakens the physiological activity in C. auratus tissues.
