Post Test Analysis to Natural Circulation Experiment on the BETHSY Facility Using the MARS 1.4 Code

  • The present study is to assess the applicability of the best-estimate thermal-hydraulic code, MARS 1.4, for the analysis of thermal-hydraulic behavior in PWRs during natural circulation conditions. The code simulates a natural circulation test, BETHSY test 4. la, which was conducted on the integral test facility of BETHSY. The test represented the cooling states of the primary cooling system under single-phase natural circulation, two-phase natural circulation and the reflux condensation mode with conditions corresponding to the residual power, 2% of the rated core power value and 6.8 MPa at the secondary system. Based on MARS 1.4 calculations, the major thermal-hydraulic behaviors during natural circulation are evaluated and the differences between the experimental data and calculated results are identified. The calculated results show generally good behavior with regard to the experimental results; the region of single-phase natural circulation is 100-92% of the initial mass inventory, two-phase natural circulation is 84-63 %, and the reflux condensation mode occurred below 58 %. U-tubes empty and the core uncovery are obtained at 39 % and 34 % of the initial mass inventory, respectively.

직사각형 전지 케이스의 V-notch부 터짐 예측에 관한 연구 (Study on Bursting Prediction of Rectangular Battery Case with V-Notch)

  • In this study, V-notch part has been considered as one of safety components in rectangular cup used for mobile device. This kind of safety component in rectangular cup with the V-notch part, which controls adequately the increased internal pressure in the rectangular cup, plays an important role to prevent the explosion from the excessive internal pressure. The protecting mechanism on the mobile device against the explosion is that a series of fracture on the V-notch part at the critical internal pressure level occurs. Therefore, it is very crucial to estimate accurately the working pressure range of the safety device. Relationship between the working internal pressure and fracture phenomenon at V-Notch part was investigated through numerical analysis using ductile fracture criteria. Integral value, I, of the used ductile fracture criteria was calculated from effective stress and strain, and then the bursting pressure of the V-notch part was extracted. Comparisons between the estimated and experimental results show that this systematic approach to predict bursting pressure using the ductile fracture criteria gives fairly good agreements.

  • 고수준의 정보 서비스를 제공하기 위해서는 소프트웨어의 고품질화를 추구하여야 한다. 기존에 개발된 품질측정방법들은 모듈내에 포함되어 있는 요인항목들을 서로 다른 관점에서 개별적으로 측정하고있어 통합적인 평가방법이 필요하다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 다수의 측정 방법들을 모두 수용할 수 있는 모델을 제안한다. 제안된 모델은 비율척도들을 선택하고, 러프논리를 이용하여 그들의 중요도를 산출한다. 다음으로 모듈의 품질도를 측정하기 위해서 퍼지적분을 이용하여 척도들의 중요도와 측정값을 종합한다. 마지막으로 척도들과 산출된 품질도의 상관관계를 분석하고, 통계적 방법으로 제안된 모델의 타당성을 보인다.

정확한 비선형 파괴역학 해석을 위한 Ramberg-Osgood 상수 결정법 (On Relevant Ramberg-Osgood Fit to Engineering Non-Linear Fracture Mechanics Analysis)

  • This paper proposes a robust method for the Ramberg-Osgood(R-O)fit to accurately estimate elastic-plastic J from engineering fracture mechanics analysis based on deformation plasticity. The proposal is based on engineering stress-strain data to determine the R-O parameters, instead of true stress-strain data. Moreover, for practical applications, the method is given not only for the case when full stress-strain data are available but also for the case when only yield and tensile strengths are available. Reliability of the proposed method for the R-O fit is validated against detailed 3-D Finite Element (FE) analyses for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes under global bending using five different materials, three stainless steels and two ferritic steels. Taking the FE J results based on incremental plasticity using actual stress-strain data as reference, the FE J results based on deformation plasticity using various R-O fits are compared with reference J values. Comparisons show that the proposed R-O fit provides more accurate J values for all cases, compared to existing methods for the R-O fit. Advantages of the proposed R-O fit in practical applications are discussed, together with its accuracy.

Two-mode Fiber with a Reduced Mode Overlap for Uncoupled Mode-division Multiplexing in C+L Band

  • We proposed a two-mode fiber (TMF) design that can effectively reduce the mode overlap between $LP_{01}$ and $LP_{11}$ modes by using a W-shaped index profile core structure, which is a primary concern in uncoupled mode division multiplexing (MDM). TMF has a three-layered core structure; central circular core, inner cladding, and outer ring core. We confirmed that in an optimal structure the $LP_{01}$ mode was highly confined to the central core while the $LP_{11}$ mode was guided along the outer ring core to result in a minimum overlap integral. We used a full-vectorial finite element method to estimate effective index, differential group delay (DGD), confinement loss, chromatic dispersion, and mode overlap controlling the parameters of the W-shaped structure. The optimized W-profile fiber provided optical characteristics within the ITU-T recommended standards over the entire C+L band.

SMBH Mass Estimate Discrepancy and Its Origin of NGC 6861

  • NGC 6861 is the brightest S0 galaxy in the Telescopium group. It has unusually high central stellar velocity dispersion (~400 km/s) and clear rotation (~250 km/s). Considering the well-known M-sigma relation, this large central dispersion implies that the central supermassive black hole (SMBH) has mass comparable to the most massive black holes in the Universe. However, the mass implied by the bulge luminosity-SMBH mass relation is an order of magnitude lower than that predicted by the M-sigma relation. In order to determine the origin of this inconsistency, we obtain integral field spectroscopy using the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) on the ANU 2.3m telescope. The data are used to map the velocity and velocity dispersion fields which show that our measurements are consistent with those from the other literature. The large field of view the WiFeS observations have allows us to map the kinematics of a much greater portion of NGC 6861 and reveals that the eastern part of the galaxy has higher velocity and dispersion than the rest of halo. We discuss the origin of the unusual fast rotation and the discrepancy of two SMBH mass estimations from three plausible perspectives: 1) the interaction between subgroups of NGC 6861 and its counterpart, NGC 6868; 2) the inhibited growth of the stellar bulge by the AGN activity which leads to an underestimate the SMBH mass when using the bulge luminosity-SMBH mass relation; and 3) gas rich minor mergers that could be crucial for increasing both rotation velocity and velocity dispersion during the evolution of NGC 6861.

Characterization of Electric Double-Layer Capacitor with 0.75M NaI and 0.5 M VOSO4 Electrolyte

  • We describe a redox-enhanced electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) that turns the electrolyte in a conventional EDLC into an integral, active component for charge storage-charge is stored both through faradaic reactions with soluble redox-active molecules in the electrolyte, and through the double-layer capacitance in a porous carbon electrode. The mixed-redox electrolyte, composed of vanadium and iodides, was employed to achieve high power density. The electrochemical reaction in a supercapacitor with vanadium and iodide was studied to estimate the charge capacity and energy density of the redox supercapacitor. A redox supercapacitor with a mixed electrolyte composed of 0.75 M NaI and 0.5 M $VOSO_4$ was fabricated and studied. When charged to a potential of 1 V, faradaic charging processes were observed, in addition to the capacitive processes that increased the energy storage capabilities of the supercapacitor. The redox supercapacitor achieved a specific capacity of 13.44 mAh/g and an energy density of 3.81 Wh/kg in a simple Swagelok cell. A control EDLC with 1 M $H_2SO_4$ yielded 7.43 mAh/g and 2.85 Wh/kg. However, the relatively fast self-discharge in the redox-EDLC may be due to the shuttling of the redox couple between the polarized carbon electrodes.

Control of Robot Manipulators Using Time-Delay Estimation and Fuzzy Logic Systems

  • A highly accurate model-free controller is proposed for trajectory tracking control of robot manipulators. The proposed controller incorporates time-delay estimation (TDE) to estimate and cancel continuous nonlinearities of robot dynamics, and exploits fuzzy logic systems to suppress the effect of the TDE error, which is due to discontinuous nonlinearities such as friction. To this end, integral sliding mode is defined using desired error dynamics, and a Mamdani-type fuzzy inference system is constructed. As a result, the proposed controller achieves the desired error dynamics well. Implementation of the proposed controller is easy because the design of the controller is intuitive and straightforward, and calculations of the complex robot dynamics are not required. The tracking performance of the proposed controller is verified experimentally using a 3-degree of freedom PUMA-type robot manipulator.

  • 확산모형은 입자의 운동현상과 금융자산의 미시적 가격변동을 설명하기 위하여 사용되는 수리적 모형이다. 확산모형의 추정방법에 관한 논의는 다양한 분야에서 이루어져 왔다. 통계학적 관점에서 우도적 방법에 기반한 확산모형의 추정방법을 개발하려는 시도가 계속되어 왔다. 이산시간 간격으로 관측된 자료를 이용하여 확산모형을 추정할 때 최대우도 추정법을 적용하기 위해서는 확산모형에 대한 전이확률 밀도함수를 구해야 한다. 본 연구에서는 확산모형의 전이확률밀도를 근사하기 위하여, 정규분포를 따르는 확률변수를 이용하여 브라운다리 확률과정에 대한 경로적분을 대체하는 방법을 제안하고, 그 수치적 성질을 다른 방법들과 비교한다.

  • Package crack caused by the soldering process in the surface mounting plastic package is evaluated by applying the maximum energy release rate criterion. It could be shown that the crack propagation from the lower edge of the ie pad is easily occurred at the maximum temperature during the soldering process, where the pressure acting on the crack surface is assumed by the saturated vapor pressure at maximum temperature. The package crack formation depends on various parameters such as chip size, relative thickness, material properties, the moisture content and soldering temperature etc. The quantitative measure of the effects of the parameters could be easily obtained by using the taguchi's method which requires only a few kinds of combinations with such parameters. From the results, it could be obtained that the more significant parameters to effect the package reliability are the orders of Young's modulus, die pad size, down set, chip thickness and maximum soldering temperature.
