  • In this study, the infiltration behavior of slopes composed of mixed soils with clay contents of 0%, 5%, and 10% in weathered Gneiss soil, which is a representative weathered soil in Korea, was investigated, and the stability of unsaturated slopes due to rainfall infiltration was examined. For this, in this study, the soil water characteristic curve was obtained through the water retention test, and the strength constant was obtained through the triaxial compression test. Based on the obtained results, the influence of clay content and antecedent rainfall effect (i.e., initial suction) on the formation of saturated zone (i.e., wetting band) and slope stability due to rainfall infiltration was examined through infiltration and stability analyses. As a result, it was found that the hig her the initial suction, the slower the formation of the saturated zone on the slope. In addition, it was found that as the clay content increases, the shear strength of the ground increases and the resistance to rainfall infiltration increases, and eventually the slope stability is greatly improved.

  • In this paper, we consider the problem of finding the stability region in state space for uncertain linear systems with input saturation. For stability analysis, two Lyapunov functions are chosen. One is for the lineal region and the other is for the saturated legion. Piecewise Lyapunov functions are obtained by solving successive linear matrix inequalites(LMIs) relaxations. A sufficient condition for robust stability is derived in the form of stability region of initial conditions. A numerical example shows the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • In the stability analysis of a synchronous motor, the considerations of the initial conditions, that is, field application points and the determination techniques of stability regions to assure stable operations over four quadrants are very important. In this paper, Lyapunov stability regions obtained from a newly proposed algorithm with Lyapunov function of simple type on the basis of numerical analysis method are shown to be true stability regions which can accurately pull in within 2 (rad) after field application.

  • When the aircraft is developed, several flight tests are performed including stability and controllability, performance and systems, above all the most important part of the flight test is stability test. Stability test is divided into two parts, static stability and dynamic stability. Static stability of the aircraft is typically defined in terms of its initial tendency to return to equilibrium after a disturbance and not included time concept. One of static stability, longitudinal static stability, was addressed here. The longitudinal static stability was studied from the basic theory to the flight test method and also explained data reduction method throughout the flight test. Finally showed how to meet the specifications such as ROC, FAR and MIL-specifications.

  • This study researched the effect of initial expenses for food service business and shop characteristics on the motive of starting business through questionnaires(from April to May, 2008). The results are as follows. First, for the hypothesis, 'the motive of starting business depends on its initial expenses', the significance probability of good commercial area was .015 and that of retirement was .020, showing statistically significant difference. F values were 2,889 and 2.734 each, which showed significant difference by 0.001. Second, for the hypothesis, 'the motive of starting business depends on shop characteristics', the significance probability of the accomplishment desire, the future stability and the retirement were .011, .009, and .025 each, showing statistically significant difference. F values were 2,616, 3.034 and 3.177 each, showing significant difference by .001. Lastly, initial expenses for business and shop characteristics showed significant difference according to the demographical variables on the motive of starting business. This study shows the problem of starting business with no extra funds. It is important to reflect the opinions of founders about the commercial building lease protection law for them to concentrate on business. The founders should research for menu and systems and be aware of the tendency of the industry for sure.

  • The structural and thermal stability of $Li[Co_{0.1}Ni_{0.15}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.55}]O_2$ electrode during cycling process was studied. The sample was prepared by simple combustion method. Although there were irreversible changes on the initial cycle, O3 stacking for $Li[Co_{0.1}Ni_{0.15}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.55}]O_2$ structure was retained during the first and subsequent cycling process. Impedance of the test cell was decreased after the first charge-discharge process, which would be of benefit to intercalation and deintercalation of lithium ion on subsequent cycling. As expected, cycling test for 75 times increased impedance of the cell a little, instead, thermal stability of $Li[Co_{0.1}Ni_{0.15}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.55}]O_2$ was improved. Moreover, based on DSC analysis, the initial exothermic peak was shifted to high temperature range and the amount of heat was also decreased after cycling test, which displayed that thermal stability was not deteriorated during cycling.

  • Approximately 89% of all capsizing accidents involve small vessels, and despite their relatively high accident rates, small vessels are not subject to ship stability regulations. Small vessels, where the provision of essential basic design documents for stability calculations is omitted, face challenges in directly calculating their stability. In this study, considering that the majority of domestic coastal small vessels are of the Chine-type design, the goal is to establish the major hull form characteristic data of vessels, which can be identified from design documents such as the general arrangement drawing, as input data. Through the application of a deep learning approach, specifically a multilayer neural network structure, we aim to infer hydrostatic curves, operational draft ranges, and more. The ultimate goal is to confirm the possibility of directly calculating the initial stability of small vessels.

  • In cementless total hip replacement(THR), an initial stability of the femoral component is important to long term fixation of femoral stem. The initial stability has close relationship with the relative displacement of prosthesis and spongy bone at the proximal of femur. After implantation of the prosthesis. the surrounding bone is partially shielded from load carrying and starts to resort. Stress shielding is the cause of the loss of proximal bone. Assessing stress distribution of femur is important to predict stress shielding. The initial stability and the stress shielding were investigated for two loading conditions approximating a single leg stance and a stair climbing. Three types of stems were studied by the finite element method to analyze the biomechanical effects of distal filling of cementless femoral stems, Three types of stems employed are a distal filling stem, a distal flexible stem, and a distal tapered stem.

  • The effect of a reactant ratio on the growth of a buoyancy-driven instability in an irreversible A+B→C reaction system is analyzed theoretically and numerically. Taking a non-stoichiometric reactant ratio into account, new linear stability equations are derived without the quasi-steady state assumption (QSSA) and solved analytically. It is found that the main parameters to explain the present system are the Damköhler number, the dimensionless density difference of chemical species and the ratio of reactants. The present initial grow rate analysis without QSSA shows that the system is initially unconditionally stable regardless of the parameter values; however, the previous initial growth rate analysis based on the QSSA predicted the system is unstable if the system is physically unstable. For time evolving cases, the present growth rates obtained from the spectral analysis and pseudo-spectral method support each other, but quite differently from that obtained under the conventional QSSA. Adopting the result of the linear stability analysis as an initial condition, fully nonlinear direct numerical simulations are conducted. Both the linear analysis and the nonlinear simulation show that the reactant ratio plays an important role in the onset and the growth of the instability motion.

  • In this paper, we investigate the local asymptotic stability, the invariant intervals, the global attractivity of the equilibrium points, and the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the difference equation $x_{n+1}=\frac{a+bx_nx_{n-k}}{A+Bx_n+Cx_{n-k}}$, n = 0, 1,${\ldots}$, where the parameters a, b, A, B, C and the initial conditions $x_{-k}$, ${\ldots}$, $x_{-1}$, $x_0$ are positive real numbers.
