  • In this study, the inhibition of ammonia on anaerobic digestion of butyric acid was evaluated and the potential alleviating effects of such ammonia inhibition by the addition of magnetite particles were investigated. Independent anaerobic batch tests fed with butyric acid as a sole organic source were conducted in twenty 60-mL glass bottles with 10 different treatment conditions, comprising ammonia: 0.5, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, and 7.0 g total ammonia nitrogen (TAN)/L and magnetite particles: 0 mM and 20 mM. The increase in ammonia concentration did not cause significant inhibition on methane yield; however, a significant inhibition on lag time and specific methane production rate was observed. The IC50 in the control treatments (without magnetite addition) was estimated as 6.2654 g TAN/L. A similar inhibition trend was observed in magnetite-added treatments; however, the inhibition effect by ammonia was significantly alleviated in lag time and specific methane production rate when compared to those in the control treatments. The lag time was shortened by 1.6-46.3%, specific methane production rate was improved by 6.0-69.0%. In the magnetite-added treatments, IC50 was estimated as 8.5361 g TAN/L. This study successfully demonstrated the potential of magnetite particles as an enhancer in anaerobic digestion of butyric acid under conditions of ammonia stress.

  • The review characterized active site(s) of MAO with respect to metal ions, hydrophobic and polar region, sulfhydryl group and flavin moiety. The mechanism of inhibition was dealt with three representative types of inhibitors; phenylcyclopropylamines, acetylenic amines, and hydrazines. Multiple forms of MAO was shortly described in relation to their selective inhibition. 84 reference were cited.

  • A new antiplatelett agent, aspalatone ([3-(2-methyl-4-pyronyl)]-2-acetyloxybenzoate) was demonstrated to inhibit MDA generation from arachidonic acid catalyzed by partially purified bovine seminal vesicle cyclooxygenase. This inhibition was also observed with acetylsalicylic acid. The results suggest that the mechanism for the antiplatelet effect of aspalatone is, like acetylsalicylic acid, due to its inhibition of cyclooxygenase.

  • Palmatine, an protoberberine isoquinoline alkaloid, has been found to inhibit dopamine biosynthesis by reducing tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) activity in PC12 cells (Lee and Kim, 1996). We have therefore investigated the effects of palmatine on bovine adrenal TH. Palmatine showed a mild inhibition on bovine adrenal TH (36.4% inhibition at concentration of $200\muM$). Bovine adrenal TH was inhibited competitively by palmatine with a substrate L-tyrosine. The Ki value was found to be 0.67 mM. This result suggests that the inhibition of TH activity by palmatine may be partially involved in the reduction of dopamine biosynthesis in PC12 cells.

  • Cell-free extracts of Streptomyces neyagawaensis SL-387 grown on a chemically defined medium supplemented with DL-3-amino-3-phenylpropionic acid (APP) produced N-acetyl-APP (Ac-APP) in the presence of APP and acetyl coenzyme A. The APP obtained by acid hydrolysis of the Ac-APP was D-configuration: $[\alpha]_D+6.5^{\circ}(H_2O)\;at\;20^{\circ}C$, optical purity 92% enantiomeric excesses (ee). These results suggest that an N-acetyltransferase exists in the cell-free extract as a novel enzyme with specificity for D-APP.

  • Corrosion inhibition of carbon steel in 2M HCl by some benzohydrazide derivatives (I-III) was studied using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques at $30^{\circ}C$. Polarization studies showed that all the investigated compounds are of mixed type inhibitors. Temperature studies revealed a decrease in efficiency with rise in temperature and corrosion activation energies increased in the presence of the hydrazide derivatives, probably implying that physical adsorption of cationic species may be responsible for the observed inhibition behavior. Electrochemical impedance studies showed that the presence of benzohydrazide derivatives decreases the double layer capacitance and increases the charge transfer resistance. The adsorption of these compounds on carbon steel surface was found to obey Temkin's adsorption isotherm. Synergistic effects increased the inhibition efficiency in the presence of halide additives namely KI and KBr. An inhibition mechanism was proposed in terms of strongly adsorption of inhibitor molecules on carbon steel surface.

  • Enzyme kinetics data play a vital role in the design of reactors and control of processes. In the present study, kinetic studies on pectinases were carried out. Partially purified polymethylgalacturonase (PMG) and polygalacturonase (PG) were the two pectinases studied. The plot of initial rate vs. initial substrate concentration did not follow the conventional Michaelis-Menten kinetics, but substrate inhibition was observed. For PMG, maximum rate was attained at an initial pectin concentration of 3 g/l, whereas maximum rate was attained when the initial substrate concentration of 2.5 g/l of polygalacturonic acid for PG I and PG II. The kinetic data were fitted to five different kinetic models to explain the substrate inhibition effect. Among the five models tested, the combined mechanism of protective diffusion limitation of both high and inhibitory substrate concentrations (semi-empirical model) explained the inhibition data with 96-99% confidence interval.

  • Tumor cell interaction with the extracellular matrix is defined as the critical event of tumor invasion that signals the initiation of a metastatic cascade. Sesquicillin has been identified as an inhibitor of melanoma cell adhesion to the components of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in cultured broth of fungal strain F60063. Sesquicillin strongly inhibited the adhesion of B16 melanoma cells to laminin, fibronectin, and typeIV collagen. It also inhibited B16 melanoma cell invasion of reconstituted basement membrane Matrigel in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that sesquicillin is a new class of nonpeptidic ECM adhesion inhibitor having anti-invasive activity.

  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the main and interaction effects of inhibition, day-care experiences and mothers' controlling child-rearing behavior on young children's social withdrawal in peer situations. A total of 62 young children(34 boys; 28girls) enrolled in day-care center and their mothers participated in this study. Data on child inhibition and parenting were gathered via questionnaires whereas the quality of day-care and social withdrawal were observed in the day-care center. As results, the quality of day-care and mothers' controlling child-rearing behavior were negatively related to social withdrawal. Further, both day-care entry age and the quality of day-care were served as an intervening variables between child inhibition and social withdrawal.
