Coarse clumping of solid materials within diseased biological cells can have a marked influence on the light scattering pattern. Perturbations in refractive index lead to distinct variations in the cytometric signature, especially apparent over wide scattering angles. The large dynamic range of scattering intensities restricts collection of data to narrow angular intervals believed to have the highest potential for medical diagnosis. We propose the use of an interference filter to reduce the dynamic range. Selective attenuation of scattering intensity levels is expected to allow simultaneous data collection over a wide angular interval. The calculated angular transmittance of a commercial shortwave-pass filter of cut-off wavelength 580 nm indicates significant attenuation of scattering peaks below ${\~}\;10^{circ}$, and reasonable peak equalization at higher angles. For the three-dimensional calculation of laser light scattered by cells we use a spectral method code that models cells as spatially varying dielectrics, stationary in time. However, we perform preliminary experimental testing with the interference filter on polystyrene microspheres instead of biological cells. A microfluidic toolkit is used for the manipulation of the microspheres. The paper intends to illustrate the principle of a light scattering detection system incorporating an interference filter for selective attenuation of scattering peaks.
The influence of oxygen concentration and CO$_{2}$ as diluent in oxidizer side on soot characteristics was studied by Laser Induced Incandescence, Time Resolved LII and Transmission Electron Microscopy photography in non-premixed co flowing flames. Through the comparison of TEM photographs and the decay rate of LII signal, suitable two delay times of TIRE-LII method and signal sensitivity ($\Delta$S$_{TIRE-LII/) were determined. The effects of O$_{2}$ and CO$_{2}$ as diluent in oxidizer side on soot formation are investigated with these calibrated techniques. The O$_{2}$+CO$_{2}$, N$_{2}$, and [Ar+CO$_{2}$] mixture in co-flow were used to isolate CO2 effects systematically. The number concentration of primary particle and soot volume fraction abruptly decrease by the addition of CO$_{2}$ to the co-flow. This suppression is resulted from the short residence time in inception region because of the late nucleation and the decrease of surface growth distance by the low flame temperature due to the higher thermal capacity and the chemical change of CO$_{2}$ including thermal dissociation. As the oxygen concentration increases, the number concentration of soot particles at the inception region increases and thus this increase of nucleation enhances the growth of soot particle.
Silicon nitride thin film deposited with Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition was treated by a nitrogen plasma generated by Inductively Coupled Plasma at room temperature. The treatment was investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy on the surface at various RF source powers at two RF bias powers. The amount of hydrogen was reduced and the surface roughness of the films was decreased remarkably after the plasma treatment. In order to understand the causes, we analyzed the plasma diagnostics by Optical Emission Spectroscopy and Double Langmuir Probe. Based on these analysis results, we show that the nitrogen plasma treatment was effective in the improving of the properties silicon nitride thin film for flexible display.
Characteristics of pulse-discharged plasma in liquid and its biological applications to proteins are investigated by making use of high voltage Marx generator. The Marx generator has been consisted of 5 stages, where each charging capacitor is $0.5{\mu}F$ to generate a high voltage pulse with rising time of $1{\mu}s$. We have applied an input voltage of 6 kV to the each capacitor of $0.5{\mu}F$. The high voltage pulsed plasma has been generated inside a polycarbonate tube by a single-shot operation, where the breakdown voltage is measured to be 7 kV, current of 1.2 kA, and pulse width of ${\sim}1{\mu}s$ between the two electrodes of anode-cathode made of stainless steel, which are immersed into the liquids. For the investigation of the influence of pulsed plasma on biomolcules, we have focused on the amino acids, DNA, proteins, cell and cholesterol.

In this paper, we propose extending proportional hazards frailty models to allow a discrete distribution for the frailty variable. Having zero frailty can be interpreted as being immune or cured. Thus, we develop a new survival model induced by discrete frailty with zero-inflated power series distribution, which can account for overdispersion. This proposal also allows for a realistic description of non-risk individuals, since individuals cured due to intrinsic factors (immunes) are modeled by a deterministic fraction of zero-risk while those cured due to an intervention are modeled by a random fraction. We put the proposed model in a Bayesian framework and use a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm for the computation of posterior distribution. A simulation study is conducted to assess the proposed model and the computation algorithm. We also discuss model selection based on pseudo-Bayes factors as well as developing case influence diagnostics for the joint posterior distribution through ${\psi}-divergence$ measures. The motivating cutaneous melanoma data is analyzed for illustration purposes.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of food intake on radial pulse amplitude. Methods : Thirty one healthy male subjects participated in this study. Radial pulse was measured using 3 dimensional pulse imaging system (DMP-3000) before, right after, 40 minutes after, 80 minutes after and 120 minutes after food intake. Results : 1. The amplitude of h1 increased significantly right after food intake compared to 'before food intake' at all 6 measuring points. Later on, it decreased back as time passed, however, even 120 minutes later, it was still higher than 'before food intake' 2. Pulse energy, which is calculated from pulse waves acquired with five sensors, increased after food intake as well. Conclusions : Food intake exerts an influence on radial pulse amplitude, resulting in increase of h1 and pulse energy.

This paper examines the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on the Philippine stock exchange, peso-dollar rate and retail price of diesel using robust least squares regression and vector autoregression (VAR). The robust least squares regression using MM-estimation method concluded that COVID-19 daily infection has negative and statistically significant effect on the Philippine stock exchange index, peso-dollar exchange rate and retail pump price of diesel. This is consistent with the results of correlation diagnostics. As for the VAR model, the lag values of the independent variable disclose significance in explaining the Philippine stock exchange index, peso-dollar exchange rate and retail pump price of diesel. Moreover, in the short run, the impulse response function confirmed relative effect of COVID-19 daily infections and the variance decomposition divulge that COVID-19 daily infections have accounted for only minor portion in explaining fluctuations of the Philippine stock exchange index, peso-dollar exchange and retail pump price of diesel. In the long term, the influence levels off. The Granger causality test suggests that COVID-19 daily infections cause changes in the Philippine stock exchange index and peso-dollar exchange rate in the short run. However, COVID-19 infection has no causal link with retail pump price of diesel.
Background: All clinicians are aware of the difficulty of installing a dental implant in posterior maxilla because of proximate position of maxillary sinus, insufficient bone width, and lower bone density. This study is to examine which factors will make the implantation in the posterior maxilla more difficult, and which factors will affect the postoperative implant stability in this region. Methods: Five hundred seventy-three fixtures on the maxilla posterior were included for this study from all the patients who underwent an installation of the dental implant fixture from January 2010 to December 2014 at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Pusan National University Dental Hospital (Yangsan, Korea). The postoperative implant stability quotient (ISQ) value, fixture diameter and length, presence of either bone graft or sinus lift, and graft material were included in the reviewed factors. The width and height of the bone bed was assessed via preoperative cone beam CT image analysis. The postoperative ISQ value was taken just before loading by using the OsstellTM $mentor^{(R)}$ (Integration Diagnostics AB, Gothenburg, Sweden). The t test and ANOVA methods were used in the statistical analysis of the data. Results: Mean ISQ of all the included data was 79.22. Higher initial bone height, larger fixture diameter, and longer fixture length were factors that influence the implant stability on the posterior edentulous maxilla. On the other hand, the initial bone width, bone graft and sinus elevation procedure, graft material, and approach method for sinus elevation showed no significant impact associated with the implant stability on the posterior edentulous maxilla. Conclusions: It is recommended to install the fixtures accurately in a larger diameter and longer length by performing bone graft and sinus elevation.
Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) play an important role in detoxification of carcinogenic electrophiles. The null genotypes in GSTM1 and GSTT1 have been implicated in carcinogenesis. Present study was planned to evaluate the influence of genetic polymorphisms of GSTM1 and GSTT1 gene loci in cervical carcinogenesis. The study was conducted in Lok Nayak hospital, New Delhi. DNA from clinical scrapes of 482 women with minor gynaecologic complaints attending Gynaecology OPD and tumor biopsies of 135 cervical cancer cases attending the cancer clinic was extracted. HPV DNA was detected by standard polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using L1 consensus primer pair. Polymorphisms of GSTM1 and GSTT1 were analysed by multiplex PCR procedures. Differences in proportions were tested using Pearson's Chi-square test with Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). The risk of cervical cancer was almost three times in women with GSTM1 homozygous null genotype (OR-2.62, 95%CI, 1.77-3.88; p<0.0001). No association of GSTM1 or GSTT1 homozygous null genotypes was observed in women with normal, precancerous and cervical cancerous lesions among ${\leq}35$ or >35 years of age groups. Smokers with null GSTT1 genotype had a higher risk of cervical cancer as compared to non-smokers (OR-3.01, 95% CI, 1.10-8.23; p=0.03). The results further showed that a significant increased risk of cervical cancer was observed in HPV positive smoker women with GSTT1 (OR-4.36, 95% CI, 1.27-15.03; p=0.02) and GSTM1T1 (OR-3.87, 95% CI, 1.05-14.23; p=0.04) homozygous null genotypes as compared to HPV positive non smokers. The results demonstrate that the GST null genotypes were alone not associated with the development of cervical cancer, but interacted with smoking and HPV to exert effects in our Delhi population.
