A certified reference material (CRM) for the analysis of nutrient elements in an edible mushroom (Ganoderma lyceum) powder has been developed (KRISS CRM 108-10-011). The mass fractions of calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn) were measured by isotope dilution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ID ICP/MS). To dissolve the fungi cell wall of mushroom consisted of chitin fibers, sample preparation method by single reaction chamber type microwave-assisted acid digestion with acid mixtures was optimized. The mean measurement results obtained from 12 sample bottles were used to assign as the certified values for the CRM and the between-bottle homogeneities were evaluated from the relative standard deviations. The certified values were metrologically traceable to the definition of the kilogram in the International System of Units (SI). This CRM is expected to be used for validation of analytical methods or quality control of measurement results in analytical laboratories when they determine the mass fractions of elements in mushroom or other similar samples.

A rapid and accurate determination method of ultra-trace amounts of germanium in spring water by ICP-MS has been developed. Mass number 74 was not only the best mass but also the smallest mass interference. Only 30% of water samples contain germanium more than $0.1{\mu}g/L$, and a few of them has organogermanium species.
An internal standard was used in PCID (post column isotope dilution) to improve the accuracy and precision in quantification of various chemical species. The error occurring in the column was the largest in HPLC-ICP/MS (high performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry) when PCID and other traditional quantification methods were compared with each other. Internal standard was effective in correcting the loss of sample in the column to improve accuracy and precision. When applied to SeMet, using MeSecys or $Se^{4+}$ as an internal standard, relative errors were reduced from 31% and 13% to less than 1%, while standard deviations were reduced from 5.1% and 6.9% to 1.5% and 0.2%, respectively. Positive aspects of using an internal standard in PCID were compared with other quantitative techniques and discussed in detail.

A certified reference material (CRM) for the analysis of inorganic nutrients in nutritional supplements has been developed. Accurate mass fractions of chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) were determined by isotope dilution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ID ICP/MS). The measurement results were used to assign certified values for the CRM, which were metrologically traceable to the definitions of the measurement units in the International System of Units (SI). Production of a candidate reference material (RM) and the certification processes are summarized. Each nutrient in the CRM showed good homogeneity, which was estimated using relative standard deviations of the measurement results of twelve bottles in a batch. This CRM is expected to be an important reference to improve reliability and comparability of nutrient analyses in nutritional supplements and related samples in analytical laboratories.

A simple, fast yet sensitive method is described for the determination of fifty elements in coal by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The method involves complete dissolution of coal with mixed acid $(HNO_3, HF, HClO_4)$ in hish pressure Teflon bomb and subsequent inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric(ICP-MS) measurement. The accuracy of the method, being evaluated by the analysis of NIST SRMs (1632a, 1632b) is better than 20% RSD for most elements. The limits of detection defined by two times $\sigma$ (standard deviation of operational blank) are in order of sub-ppm to ppm, which are low enough to quantitate most elements. However, the determiantions for few elements such as V, As, Se are severely interfered by molecular ions such that their accurate determiantions are not possible. Analytical results for twentyon coals from eight countries including six ones world major coal producing, Korea, Japan, China, I.C.S., U.S.A., Canada, Australia, and South Africa are presented. While the results for major elements agree well with the existing ones, those for a few trace elements disagree considerably. The existing values are considerably higher. It is not possible to judge which are more accurate. However, the exisisting values are more likely to be errorous inasmuch as they are obtained without using high purity reagents and clean laboratory techniques.
An analytical method for the simultaneous measurement of trace Cu, Sn, and Bi in sea water has been investigated by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry. Amberlite IRC-718 resin was used as a solid phase in solid-liquid extraction technique for the removal of matrix interferences such as Na, S, P, and other polyatomic ion species. Recoveries of 99.8% for Cu, 99.6% for Sn, and 97.9% for Bi were obtained for the standard spiked sample. The developed method was applied to analysis of trace metals in sea water.
Mass spectrometric analysis was carried out using multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) for the precise and accurate determination of the isotope ratios of ultratrace levels of uranium dissolved in 3% $HNO_3$. We used the certified reference material (CRM) 112-A at a trace level of 100 pg/mL for the uranium isotopic measurement. Multiple collectors were utilized for the simultaneous measurement of uranium isotopes to reduce the signal uncertainty due to variations in the ion beam intensity over time. Mass bias correction was applied to the measured U isotopes to improve the precision and accuracy. Furthermore, elemental standard solution with certified values of platinum, iridium, gold, and thallium dissolved in 3% $HNO_3$ were analyzed to investigate the formation rates of the polyatomic ions of $Ir^{40}$$Ar^+$, $Pt^{40}$$Ar^+$, $Tl^{40}$$Ar^+$, $Au^{40}$$Ar^+$ for the concentration range of 50-400 pg/mL. Those polyatomic ions have mass-to-charge ratios in the 230-245 m/z region that it would contribute to the increase of background intensity of uranium, thorium, plutonium, and americium isotopes. The effect of the polyatomic ion interference on uranium isotope measurement has been estimated.
Objectives: The aims of this study were to compare concentrations and the correspondence of human blood cadmium by using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), which are representative methods of heavy metal analysis. Methods: We randomly selected 79 people who agreed to participate in the research project. After confirming the linearity of the calibration curves for GF-AAS and ICP-MS, the concentrations of cadmium in a quality control standard material and blood samples were measured, and the correlation and the degree of agreement were compared. Results: The detection limit of ICP-MS (IDL: $0.000{\mu}g/L$, MDL: $0.06{\mu}g/L$) was lower than that of GF-AAS (IDL: $0.085{\mu}g/L$, MDL: $0.327{\mu}g/L$). The coefficient of variation of the quality control standard material showed stable values for both ICP-MS (clinchek-1: 5.35%, clinchek-2: 6.22%) and GF-AAS (clinchek-1: 7.92%, clinchek-2: 5.22%). Recovery was relatively high for both ICP-MS (clinchek-1: 95.1%, clinchek-2: 92.8%) and GF-AAS (clinchek-1: 91.4%, clinchek-2: 98.8%), with more than 90%. The geometric mean, median, and percentile of blood samples were all similar. The agreement of the two instruments compared with the bias of the analytical values found that about 81% of the analytical values were within ${\pm}30%$ of the deviation from the ideal reference line (y=0). As a result of the agreement limit, the value included in the confidence interval was about 94%, which shows high agreement. Conclusion: In this study, we confirmed there was no significant difference in concentrations of a quality control standard material and blood samples. Since ICP-MS showed lower concentrations than GF-AAS at concentrations below the method detection limit of GF-AAS, it is expected that more precise results will be obtained by analyzing blood cadmium with ICP-MS.
Objective: The use of Shamma (smokeless tobacco) by certain groups is giving rise to health problems, including cancer, in parts of Saudi Arabia. Our objective was to determine metals levels in Shamma using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Methods: Thirty-three samples of Shamma (smokeless tobacco) were collected, comprising four types: brown Shamma (n = 14.0), red Shamma (n = 9.0), white Shamma (n = 4.0), and yellow Shamma (n = 6.0). All samples were collected randomly from Shamma users in the city of Najran. Levels of 11 elements (Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were determined by ICP-MS. Results: A mixed standard (20 ppb) of all elements was used for quality control, and average recoveries ranged from 74.7% to 112.2%. The highest average concentrations were found in the following order: Al ($598.8-812.2{\mu}g/g$), Mn ($51.0-80.6{\mu}g/g$), and Ni ($23.2-53.3{\mu}g/g$) in all four Shamma types. The lowest concentrations were for As ($0.7-1.0{\mu}g/g$) and Cd ($0.0-0.06{\mu}g/g$). Conclusions: The colour of each Shamma type reflects additives mixed into the tobacco. Cr and Cu were showed significant differences (P < 0.05) among Shamma types. Moreover, Pb levels are higher in red and yellow Shamma, which could be due to use (PbCrO4) as yellow colouring agent and lead tetroxide, Pb3O4 as a red colouring agent. The findings from this study can be used to raise public awareness about the safety and health effects of Shamma, which is clearly a source of oral exposure to metals.
