  • The goal of this study is to develop a simulation model of the pollutant dispersion in vehicle tunnels, which can be utilized to optimize the tunnel ventilation system. Contaminant dispersion is modelled using a FDM solution of advective diffusion equation. Taking into consideration the local vehicle emission rates by year, it is user-oriented and its logic is generalized. Therefore, differences in the ventilation scheme can be easily adapted. The results of its application to a urban tunnel show that the relative errors are 1.1~6.8% for the natural velocity, 1.3% for the traffic-induced velocity and 2.9% for the total air quantity. Simulated CO concentrations along the entire tunnel show about 13% of the relative error.

  • In this work, effect of various process-control agents (PCAs) on the mechanical alloying of amorphous alloy of $Al_{85}Y_8Ni_5Co_2$ has been investigated. The dependence of the particle shape, size and crystallization behavior of the amorphous alloy powders on the type of PCAs and their concentrations was investigated by using X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that the additive of toluene could affect positively the amorphization and thermally induced crystallization processes, as well as the size refinement, morphology and particle-size distribution of as-milled powders in comparison with alloy obtained without PCA.

  • Objectives: Dental plaque is composed of 700 bacterial species. It is known that some oral microorganisms produce porphyrin, and thus, they emit red fluorescence when illuminated with blue light at a specific wavelength of <410 nm. Porphyromonas gingivalis belongs to the genus Porphyromonas, which is characterized by the production of porphyrin. The aim of this study was to evaluate red fluorescence emission of some oral microorganisms interacting with P. gingivalis. Methods: Five bacterial strains (P. gingivalis, Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus casei, Actinomyces naeslundii, and Fusobacterium nucleatum) were used for this study. Tryptic soy agar medium supplemented with hemin, vitamin K3, and sheep blood was used as a growth medium. The fluorescence emission of bacterial colonies was evaluated under 405 nm-wavelength blue light using a Quantitative Light-induced Fluorescence Digital (QLF-D) camera system. Each bacterium was cultured alone and co-cultured in close proximity with P. gingivalis. The red/green (R/G) ratio of fluorescence image was calculated and the differences of R/G ratio according to each growth condition were compared using the Mann-Whitney test (P<0.05). Results: Single cultured S. mutans, L. casei and A. naeslundii colonies emitted red fluorescence (R/G ratio=$2.15{\pm}0.06$, $4.31{\pm}0.17$, $5.52{\pm}1.29$, respectively). Fusobacterium nucleatum colonies emitted green fluorescence (R/G ratio=$1.36{\pm}0.06$). The R/G ratios of A. naeslundii and F. nucleatum were increased when P. gingivalis was co-cultured with each bacterium (P<0.05). In contrast, the R/G ratios of S. mutans and L. casei were decreased when P. gingivalis was co-cultured with each bacterium (P=0.002, 0.003). Conclusions: This study confirmed that P. gingivalis could affect the red fluorescence of other oral bacteria under 405 nm-wavelength blue light. Our findings concluded that P. gingivalis has an important role for red fluorescence emission of dental biofilm.

  • Bacteria that are resistant to high temperatures and alkaline environments are essential for the biological repair of damaged concrete. Alkaliphilic and halotolerant Bacillus sp. AK13 was isolated from the rhizosphere of Miscanthus sacchariflorus. Unlike other tested Bacillus species, the AK13 strain grows at pH 13 and withstands 11% (w/v) NaCl. Growth of the AK13 strain at elevated pH without urea promoted calcium carbonate (CaCO3) formation. Irregular vaterite-like CaCO3 minerals that were tightly attached to cells were observed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed the presence of CaCO3 around the cell. Isotope ration mass spectrometry analysis confirmed that the majority of CO32- ions in the CaCO3 were produced by cellular respiration rather than being derived from atmospheric carbon dioxide. The minerals produced from calcium acetate-added growth medium formed smaller crystals than those formed in calcium lactate-added medium. Strain AK13 appears to heal cracks on mortar specimens when applied as a pelletized spore powder. Alkaliphilic Bacillus sp. AK13 is a promising candidate for self-healing agents in concrete.

  • A hull-form for a 32,000G/T class Ro-Pax ferry has developed in accordance with a need of ferry operators to reduce fuel oil consumption(FOC) due to the drastic increase in oil prices recently and strengthening of environmental rules and regulations such as CO2 emission. A twin-skeg type is applied as the hull-form in lieu of an open-shaft type in order to improve propulsion performance. In order to achieve this object, flow control devices are installed to reduce a propeller induced vibration which is a main reason to obstruct the application of twin-skeg type passenger vessels owing to an uncomfortable vibration level. Numerical simulation by using an in-house code and a commercial code (Fluent) has performed to find out an optimum design of the flow control devices and to check an improvement in cavity volume. Model tests in Samsung Ship Model Basin are carried out to evaluate propulsion performance with the developed twin-skeg type hull and a reference hull of open-shaft type. In conclusion, it is shown that the twin-skeg type hull is better than the open-shaft in FOC by around 7% and in cavity volume by 20% as well.

  • In this study, we synthesis polyimide with high gas selectivity using 2,2-bis(3,4-carboxylphenyl) hexafluoropropane, 2,4,6-Trimethyl-1,3-phenylenediamine (DAM) and 4,4-Methylenedianiline (p-MDA), and then the asymmetric membrane was fabricated by non-solvent phase separation method. To confirm the property change of the membrane using different solvent, we measured and compared the viscosity of the polymer solution, cloud point and non-solvent phase separation coefficient. The morphology and gas separation property of membrane prepared by phase separation method was confirmed using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microsope and the single gas permeation measurement apparatus. The single gas ($CH_4$, $N_2$, $O_2$, $CO_2$) permeation property and selectivity value of the membrane prepared with NMP was higher than the membrane prepared with DMAc. We confirmed that the gas selectivity of the membrane increased and the permeation property decreased with increasing of the solvent evaporation time.

  • [ $SiO_2$ ]thin films containing Si-nanocrystals and $Er^{3+}$ were fabricated by the RF-sputtering method. Intense emission of $Er^{3+}$ was observed at 1530 nm region after the annealing of the film at $1050^{circ}C$ for 5 min. Channel waveguides were fabricated using such films for the core. The films containing Si higher than 2.4 at% exhibited the change in stress from compression to tension after annealing, which induced the fatal loss-increase in waveguide. The optical gain might be attained by the Er-doped waveguide with Si lower than 2.4 at% by a visible-light-excitation.

  • This numerical study investigates seismicity and fault slip induced by fluid injection in deep geothermal reservoir with pre-existing fractures and fault. Particle Flow Code 2D is used with additionally implemented hydro-mechanical coupled fluid flow algorithm and acoustic emission moment tensor inversion algorithm. The output of the model includes spatio-temporal evolution of induced seismicity (hypocenter locations and magnitudes) and fault deformation (failure and slip) in relation to fluid pressure distribution. The model is applied to a case of fluid injection with constant rates changing in three steps using different fluid characters, i.e. the viscosity, and different injection locations. In fractured reservoir, spatio-temporal distribution of the induced seismicity differs significantly depending on the viscosity of the fracturing fluid. In a fractured reservoir, injection of low viscosity fluid results in larger volume of induced seismicity cloud as the fluid can migrate easily to the reservoir and cause large number and magnitude of induced seismicity in the post-shut-in period. In a faulted reservoir, fault deformation (co-seismic failure and aseismic slip) can occur by a small perturbation of fracturing fluid (<0.1 MPa) can be induced when the injection location is set close to the fault. The presented numerical model technique can practically be used in geothermal industry to predict the induced seismicity pattern and magnitude distribution resulting from hydraulic stimulation of geothermal reservoirs prior to actual injection operation.

  • To implement carbon-neutrality in transportation sectors until 2050, hydrogen is considered a promising fuel for internal combustion engines because hydrogen does not contain carbon itself. Although hydrogen does not emit CO2 emission from its combustion process, the low energy density in a volume unit hinders the adoption of hydrogen. Therefore, the understanding of hydrogen jet behavior and measurement of equivalence ratio must be conducted to completely implement the high-pressure hydrogen direct injection. The main objective of this research is feasibility test of hydrogen local equivalence ratio measurement by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBs). To visualize the macroscopic structure of hydrogen jet, high-speed schlieren imaging was conducted. Moreover, LIBs has been adopted to validate the feasibility of hydrogen local equivalence ratio measurement. The hydrogen injection pressure was varied from 4 MPa to 8 MPa and injected in a constant volume chamber where the ambient pressure was 0.5 MPa. The increased injection pressure extends the vertical penetration of hydrogen jet. Due to the higher momentum supply when the injection pressure is high, the hydrogen has easily diffused in all directions. As the laser trigger timing has delayed, the low hydrogen atomic emission was detected due to the longer mixture formation time. Based on equivalence ratio measurement results, LIBs could be applied as a methodology for hydrogen local equivalence ratio measurement.

  • Nanosized $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ red phosphor is prepared using a template method from metal salt impregnated into a crystalline cellulose and is dispersed using a bead mill wet process. The driving force of the surface coating between $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ and mica is induced by the Coulomb force. The red phosphor nanosol is effectively coated on mica flakes by the electrostatic interaction between positively charged $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ and negatively charged mica above pH 6. To prepare $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$-coated mica ($Gd_2O_3:Eu/mica$), the coating conditions are optimized, including the stirring temperature, pH, calcination temperature, and coating amount (wt%) of $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$. In spite of the low luminescence of the $Gd_2O_3:Eu/mica$, the luminescent property is recovered after calcination above $600^{\circ}C$ and is enhanced by increasing the $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ coating amount. The $Gd_2O_3:Eu/mica$ is characterized using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, zeta potential measurements, and fluorescence spectrometer analysis.
