  • People spend most of their time inside buildings recently, so the indoor air quality is one of the most important factors to human health. Furthermore, minimum energy use with proper ventilation systems for pleasant indoor environment is necessary because of energy shortage over the world. The concern to maintain proper indoor air quality at home has been increased, and a proper indoor air quality is continuously requested by the residents. By measuring and analyzing the density fluctuation of $CO_2$ through indoor humidity and testing personal reactions regarding comfort condition, we can obtain a way to effective ventilation. Heat and carbon dioxide emissions from resident's metabolism and construction materials could be the causes of indoor air pollution. If these materials stay indoors for a long time, it could directly influence the resident's health condition with diseases. It also leads massive energy use. Therefore, the way to save energy and to have effective control of indoor ventilation is needed. This study presented the control method of bedroom ventilation by $CO_2$ concentration change and subjective evaluation.

  • Together with the concern about the indoor all quality as sick house syndrome, the Ministry of Environment announced "Indoor Air Quality Control Law for the Multi Purpose Facility," which made the interests to be focused in the urgent understanding of current condition and preparation of measures about the indoor air pollution. In Dec 2005, the law was revised to obligatorily notify the amount of Formaldehyde and Volatile Organic Compounds in the case of newly constructed apartments with more than 100 houses. School also have its own indoor air quality guideline, Indoor air quality in school is very important because, children who very weak to indoor pollutants reside long time in there. The purpose of this paper is to survey indoor air qualify in school by field measurement. Field measurements were performed in 11 schools which were selected from 3 major cities(Incheon, Dae-jeon, chuncheon) in korea, during July, 2004. Totally concentration of Indoor pollutants were determined in 27 classroom. Target air pollutants were TVOC, formaldehyde, dust, CO, CO2 and NO2. For the result of this investigation, Indoor air quality in classroom was very poor and it was found that some pollutants (TVOC, float bacteria) exceed the guideline.

  • Objectives: The traditional type of residence in used in Mongolia, called a ger, is an important residential form and applies coal combustion for cooking and heating. The combustion of coal in ger is the major source of indoor air pollution. The purposes of this study were to measure indoor air pollution in ger and determine the effect of cooking and heating activities. Methods: Indoor temperature, relative humidity, particulate matter less than $2.5{\mu}m$ ($PM_{2.5}$) and black carbon (BC) were continuously measured for 24 hours in eight ger. The measurements were conducted in January or February 2015. Heavy metals in $PM_{2.5}$ filter samples were analyzed by ICP-MS. Results: Average indoor temperature and relative humidity were $19.6{\pm}4.6^{\circ}C$ and $21.4{\pm}5.2%$, respectively. The average indoor $PM_{2.5}$ concentration in the eight ger was $119.8{\mu}g/m^3$ and ranged from 69.4 to $202.7{\mu}g/m^3$. The peak concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ and BC during cooking and heating periods were several times higher than the 24- hour average concentration. Conclusion: The major contributor to indoor $PM_{2.5}$ and BC concentrations in the ger was coal combustion for cooking and heating.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze characteristics and related factors of IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) in newly built wooden houses by measuring pre and post occupancy. The subjects were five wooden houses which were built with similar materials and completed from July to December 2013. Measuring factors were TVOC, HCHO, PM10, $CO_2$, CO, indoor temperature, and relative humidity. As the result of pre occupancy measuring, the houses that revealed the lowest TVOC concentration or HCHO concentration were satisfied with "the standard for newly built apartment houses". Therefore, IAQ by the wooden structures is considered to be in good condition. However, in cases of partial value exceeded the standard, the reason is analyzed to be the materials of molding, wrapping doors, built-in closet, or kitchen furniture, etc. rather than structure materials. Most PM10 concentration level showed slightly below "the standard for occupied multi-use facilities". Remaining of construction dust was considered to be the reason. As the result of post occupancy measuring, every value except of one subject's TVOC concentration was lower than pre occupancy, explaining the importance of natural ventilation.

  • This study were conducted to estimate property of nitrogen dioxide concentration at industrial areas in Korea. The nitrogen dioxide concentrations were measured for 50 dwellings at Ulsan and Yeochon, respectively using the nitrogen dioxide filter badge forming the passive sampler from summer time 1998 to winter time 1999. The major results obtained from this study were as follows: 1. The mean indoor, outdoor, and personal concentrations of nitrogen dioxide during summer time 1998 in Ulsan were 28.9 ppb, 24.8 ppb, 24.8 pub, respectively. 2. The mean indoor, outdoor, and personal concentrations of nitrogen dioxide during winter time 1999 in Yeochon were 11.4 ppb, 12.5 ppb, 15.5 ppb, respectively. 3. The mean concentration of nitrogen dioxide during winter time 1998 were higher than the corresponding levels during summer time 1997 in Ulsan. 4. The mean concentration of nitrogen dioxide in Ulsan were in general higher than the corresponding levels in Yeochon. 5. This results in slightly positive correlation among indoor, outdoor, and personal nitrogen dioxide concentrations for summer time in Ulsan, then it statistical significance is showed(p <.05). These results suggest that nitrogen dioxide concentrations in industrial areas seem to be affected by traffic density and conditions of industrialization.

  • CFD simulation is a very useful tool to predict the concentration of contaminant generated from the building materials in a single room. However, there is a limitation on analyzing air movement and contaminant concentration in a multi-room when the door of each room is closed. In this study, network based simulation was coupled with contaminant simulation for the multi-room condition, using an network simulation tool 'ESP-r'. The coupled simulation was first validated with experimental measurements which performed to define the characteristics of the analyzed space prior to the simulation, and indoor air flow and contaminant concentration between rooms were then analyzed when the door of each room was open and closed in the case of natural and forced ventilation.

  • In December 2006, the Ministry of Environment in Korea established the "Indoor Air Quality Management Guidelines in Public Transportation." As the items of the guideline, $CO_2$(Carbon dioxide) and PM10(Particulate matter). Therefore, the air quality inside the train is supposed to be ruled by this guideline. This study calculated the increase or decrease rate of the $CO_2$ concentration by using the data measured in accordance with flap operation. In case of flap close or open, the calculated $CO_2$ concentration variation was 6.32ppm/min. The $CO_2$ concentration prediction equation was derived from the general equation and the actual measured value are compared with the predicted $CO_2$ concentration suggested during the KyungBu high speed railway construction. The predicted value show good agreement with the measured data.

  • Recently, much attention has been paid to the problem such as sick building syndrome, which caused by the indoor air pollutant. Volatile Organic Compounds $(VOC_s)$ and formaldehyde have been considered as one of the main reason that causes indoor air pollutant. This study is for introducing and designing thermal performance of super energy saving building by conducting $VOC_s$ and formaldehyde concentration in the 3Liter house. The results of the measurement for 10 months showed that $VOC_s$ and formaldehyde decreased until the guideline concentration. It took about 7 months, and it appeared right after new construction. However, their levels were showed higher concentration in comparison with the ordinary residential houses (apartment house). The main difference of between newly built 3Liter house and ordinary apartment is their air changes, which are 0.67/h for 3Liter house and 4.0/h for the apartment.

  • With increasing concerns of indoor air quality, $CO_2$ concentration in the public transportation, such as train, bus, and subway, draws big interests. The $CO_2$ concentration in the indoor air is regarded as index of ventilation status rather than that of adverse health effect. In this study, we measured the time-series of $CO_2$ concentrations in the KTX cabin during the journey of Gyongbu-line (Seoul-Busan) and Honam-line (Seoul-Mokpo) with the number of passengers on board. At the same time, the concentration of particulate matter (PM), temperature, humidity and gaseous pollutants including HCHO and VOCs were monitored. It is found that the $CO_2$ concentration was correlated linearly with number of passengers and was highly correlated with tunnel regions where the ventilation unit (flap) was closed.
