The development of effective cellular imaging requires a specific labeling method for targeting, tracking, and monitoring cellular/molecular events in the living organism. For this purpose, we studied the cellular uptake of isocyanide-functionalized silver and gold nanoparticles by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Inside a single mammalian cell, we could monitor the intracellular behavior of such nanoparticles by measuring the SERS spectra. The NC stretching band appeared clearly at ${\sim}2,100cm^{-1}$ in the well-isolated spectral region from many organic constituents between 300 and 1,700 or 2,800 and $3,600cm^{-1}$. The SERS marker band at ${\sim}2,100cm^{-1}$ could be used to judge the location of the isocyanide-functionalized nanoparticles inside the cell without much spectral interference from other cellular constituents. Our results demonstrate that isocyanide-modified silver or gold nanoparticle-based SERS may have high potential for monitoring and imaging the biological processes at the single cell level.

Purine catabolite screening enables reliable diagnosis of certain diseases. In this regard, the development of a facile detection strategy with high sensitivity and selectivity is demanded for point-of-care applications. In this work, the simultaneous detection of uric acid (UA), xanthine (XA), and hypoxanthine (HX) was carried out as model purine catabolites by surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). The detection assay was conducted by employing high-aspect ratio Au nanopillar substrates coupled with in-situ Au electrodeposition on the substrates. The additional modification of the Au nanopillar substrates via electrodeposition was found to be an effective method to encapsulate molecules in solution into nanogaps of growing Au films that increase metal-molecule contact and improve substrate's sensitivity and selectivity. In complex solutions, the approach facilitated ternary identification of UA, XA, and HX down to concentration limits of 4.33 𝜇M, 0.71 𝜇M, and 0.22 𝜇M, respectively, which are comparable to their existing levels in normal human physiology. These results demonstrate that the proposed platform is reliable for practical point-of-care analysis of biofluids where solution matrix effects greatly reduce selectivity and sensitivity for rapid on-site disease diagnosis.

The effect of oxidation time on the characteristics and mechanical properties of spent nuclear fuel cladding was investigated using Raman spectroscopy, tube rupture test, and tensile test. As oxidation time increased, the Raman peak associated with the tetragonal zirconium oxide phase diminished and merged with the Raman peak associated with the monoclinic zirconium oxide phase near 333 cm-1. Additionally, the other tetragonal zirconium oxide phase peak at 380 cm-1 decreased after 100 d of oxidation, whereas the zirconium monoclinic oxide peak became the dominant peak. The oxidation time had no effect on the tube rupture pressure of the oxidized zirconium alloy tube. However, the yield and tensile stresses of the oxidized nuclear fuel cladding tube decreased after 100 d of oxidation. The results of the scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were represented with the in-situ Raman analysis result for the oxide characteristics generated on the cladding of spent nuclear fuel.
[ $V_{0.9}Sb_{0.1}O_x$ ]systems, bulk and deposited on different supports (five types of ${\gamma}$-aluminas, ${\alpha}$-alumina, silica-alumina, silica gel, magnesium oxide), have been tested in the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of iso-butane. This statement is derived from the data obtained by a set of characterisation techniques(specific surface area measurements, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, laser Raman spectroscopy, in situ differential scanning calorimetry and in situ diffuse reflectance-absorption infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy).
Well-aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared at low temperature of 400 $^{\circ}C$ by utilizing a radio frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (rf-PECVD) system. The MWCNTs were treated by an external rf plasma source and an ultra-violet laser in order to modify structural defect of carbon nanotube and to ablate possible contamination on carbon nanotube surface. Structural properties of carbon nanotubes were investigated by using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transformer Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). In addition, the emission properties of the MWNTs were measured for the application of field emission display (FED) in near future. Various post treatments were found to improve the field emission property of carbon nanotubes.

The evolution of oxidation states of vanadium is monitored with ambient pressure X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. As the pressure of oxygen gas and surface temperature change, the formations of various oxidation states of vanadium are observed on the surface. Under 100mTorr of the oxygen gas pressure and 523K of sample temperature, VO2 and V2O5 are formed on the surface. The temperature-dependent resistance measurement on grown sample shows a clear metal-insulator transition near 350K. In addition, the measurement of Raman spectroscopy displays the structural change from monoclinic to rutile structures across the phase transition temperature.

We studied the electrochromic properties of hydrated amorphous ruthenium oxide ($RuO_2{\cdot}xH_2O$) thin films using in-situ Raman spectroscopy during electrochemical charging/discharging cycles. We have found that the principal effect of hydrogen insertion into $RuO_2{\cdot}xH_2O$ is reduction of $Ru^{4+}\;to\;Ru^{3+}$, and not formation of new bonds involving hydrogen. We compared the changes in the Raman spectrum of a gasochromic $Pd/RuO_2{\cdot}xH_2O$ film as it is exposed to hydrogen gas with that of electrochemical hydrogen insertion. We tested the changes in the optical transmission of the $Pd/RuO_2{\cdot}xH_2O$ film when exposed to hydrogen gas.

Graphene, which is one of the most promising materials for its state-of-the-art applications, has received extensive attention because of its superior mechanical properties. However, there is little experimental evidence related to the mechanical properties of graphene at the atomic level because of the challenges associated with transferring atomically-thin two-dimensional (2D) materials onto microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices. In this study, we show successful dry transfer with a gel material of a stable, clean, and free-standing exfoliated graphene film onto a push-to-pull (PTP) device, which is a MEMS device used for uniaxial tensile testing in in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Through the results of optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and TEM, we demonstrate high quality exfoliated graphene on the PTP device. Finally, the stress-strain results corresponding to propagating cracks in folded graphene were simultaneously obtained during the tensile tests in TEM. The zigzag and armchair edges of graphene confirmed that the fracture occurred in association with the hexagonal lattice structure of graphene while the tensile testing. In the wake of the results, we envision the dedicated preparation and in situ TEM tensile experiments advance the understanding of the relationship between the mechanical properties and structural characteristics of 2D materials.

In-situ analyzation and detection of real-time chemical reactions can be a significant part in interpreting the underlying mechanism in very reactive chemical reactions. To do this, first we have designed a microfluidic device (MFD) pattern for observation of synthesis of hierarchical nanostructures based on graphene oxide (GO), conjugating the well-known coupling reaction by which the solution of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC)-mediated coupling is enhanced in the presence of n-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) to make amide bonding, hereafter called as the EDC coupling. Then, we have manufactured microfluidic devices with multiple tens of micrometer-sized channels that can circulate those nanomaterials to be chemically reacted in the channels. These microfluidic devices were made by negative photo lithography and soft lithography. We showed the possibility of using Raman spectroscopy to reveal the basic mechanism of the energy storage applications.
