  • This paper, based on "Minhwa Chaekgeori" paintings from the collection of the National Museum of Korea, identifies and discusses fourteen similar works in domestic and international collections as products of the Seokdang workshop. First, the relevant paintings are identified as products of the workshop known as Seokdang (石堂, literally "stone hall") by the workshop's seal that is stamped on them. Second, analysis of the iconography indicates that the paintings were likely produced in the 1920s. Third, research on certain geographic names and addresses associated with this group of paintings suggests that they might not have been separately commissioned, but are rather examples of partially "ready-made" paintings. Fourth, the paper discusses how the designs of various cultural products in these paintings reflects contemporaneous changes in Korea's diplomatic and commercial relations, i.e., the decline of relations with China and rise of relations with the United States and Europe. Finally, a comparison of the Seokdang chaekgeori paintings with the popular chaekgeori paintings produced by Yi Hyeongrok and Yi Deokyeong in the early twentieth century provides important implications for the succession of tradition and innovation in visual culture.

  • This study analyzes how Princess Deokhye's photos before entering elementary school were exploited in newspapers during the Japanese colonial period by introducing Roland Barthes' semiological methodology for analysis of photography. In the early 1920s, the Japanese imperialists actively exploited Princess Deokhye, who was about to enter elementary school, to propagate their education policy. The Maeil Shinbo cooperated with their policies by publishing photos and articles of Princess Deokhye. In this paper, 2 photos and articles published in Maeilshinbo were analyzed. As a result, it was found that messages were produced that justified Japanese education policy by using various rhetorical techniques of photography and texts complementary to each other, and that the readers were induced to accept them naturally. In conclusion, it was possible to reveal the seriousness of the problem in that these articles were not merely for propaganda of policy, but were to encourage the disappearance of the traditional values of Joseon.

  • Coal liquefaction technology was established in Germany in 1920s. Coal liquefaction refers to the process in which coal is converted into liquid fuels such as gasoline and diesel oil under certain conditions. Coal liquefaction is usually classified into direct coal liquefaction (DCL) and indirect coal liquefaction (ICL). Various technologies for coal liquefaction, conducted between 1970s and 2000s, resulted in the development and optimization of a communication ready technology for the production of petroleum substitutes as refinery feedstocks. The purpose of this paper is to review the research, development and demonstration of coal liquefaction. In these respects, various DCL and ICL processes under development were illustrated and compared. Also, the status and perspective of coal liquefaction projects in the world were viewed. Considering the scale, and technical difficulties of domestic coal liquefaction, the project has be leaded by the government.

  • This study is to re-read Yun, Baek-nam(1888-1954)'s editorial "Theatre and Society" from the perspective of postcolonial criticism. He was a man of the theatre who pursued practical interests in compliance with the colonial reality under the rule of the Japanese imperialism. His advocacy of theatre development work was based on the Japan-directional reformism and on Japan-friendly in following after Japan's improvement policy. His general discussion on Western theatre history had considerable errors as a result of focus on the social role and utility of the theatre. But his vindication of theatre-actor opened an era of interaction between theatre and intelligence in Korea. In addition, his enlightening view of a theatre became such as one of the cornerstones for the Shinkug Movement during Japanese colonial period in Korea.

  • This study reviewed the prisoners' dietary lift status under the world panics and Japanese food shortage based on the data of the 1920~1930's prisons' main dish supplies in Chosun, Shinchu boys' prison in Taiwan, Franue correction center in France and Moabit detention house in Germany. 1. The status of main dish food supply of Chosun prisons in 1920~1930's was as follows: 1) Meals were provided with 12 rates depending on the working activities. There were big differences in energy supply between 1$^{st}$ rate of 6045.0 ㎉ in the Mockpo prison and 12$^{th}$ rate of 1855.8 ㎉ in the Masan prison in accordance with the grain supply ratio and the diet rates. 2) The average ratio of energy provided with protein, fat and carbohydrate(PFC ratio) was 20.0: 20.2: 59.8. The supplies of protein and fat were relatively high because main dish was mostly composed of soybean. The soybean was used in 20 ~60% of main dish in prisons except Gaesung. 3) It was estimated that PFC ratio(8.3: 8.1 : 83.6) in Gaesung boys' prison was not appropriate for growing boys because the soybean supply was low. 2. The overall comparison of nutrition supply of prisons in Chosun, Taiwan, France and Germany was as follows: 1) The daily supplies of energy in Keongsung prison was 3966.5 ㎉, of which the PFC ratio was 18.9: 16.6: 64.5. This showed that the PFC ratio seemed to be balanced, even though the total amount of energy is too high and the ratios of protein and fat were somewhat high and somewhat low, respectively. 2) The main dish of the Taiwan boys' prison was provided with 6 rates and the side dish in the from of weekly cycle menu. The energy intakes from 1$^{st}$ rate of 2862.9 ㎉ to 6$^{th}$ rate of 1388.9 ㎉ were not quite enough for growing boys. It was estimated that the amounts of protein and fat taken were small but the quality was not that bad because animal protein such as protein small fish and fried tofu were supplied. 3) In the French Frenue correction center and the German Moabit detention house, the daily total amounts of energy were 2771.3 ㎉ and 2678.7 ㎉, respectively, which was estimated as appropriate compared with standard energy amount of 3000 ㎉ at that time and the current energy RDA of 2500 ㎉ for adult. The ratio of PFC was 16.2: 12.0: 71.8 in Frenue correction center and 12.4: 14.3: 73.3 in Moabit detention house, which showed that the amount of fat was slightly lacked. From this study, it was suggested that the prisons in Chosun and Taiwan under the Japanese rule and European prisons after the world panic were making an efforts to supply prisoners the appropriate amount of energy. The only question remains is that this data may be from only the food supply plan not from the data the prisoners took in real.eal.

  • In this paper, we propose a low-complexity feature detection algorithm for object tracking and present hardware architecture design and implementation results for real-time processing. The existing Shi-Tomasi algorithm shows good performance in object tracking applications, but has a high computational complexity. Therefore, we propose an efficient feature detection algorithm, which can reduce the operational complexity with the similar performance to Shi-Tomasi algorithm, and present its real-time implementation results. The proposed feature detector was implemented with 1,307 logic slices, 5 DSP 48s and 86.91Kbits memory with FPGA. In addition, it can support the real-time processing of 54fps at an operating frequency of 114MHz for $1920{\times}1080FHD$ images.
