Graphene, two dimensional single layer of carbon atoms, has tremendous attention due to its superior property such as fast electron mobility, high thermal conductivity and optical transparency, and also found many applications such as field-effect transistors (FET), energy storage and conversion, optoelectronic device, electromechanical resonators and chemical sensors. Several techniques have been developed to form the graphene. Especially chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a promising process for the large area graphene. For the electrically isolated devices, the graphene should be transfer to insulated substrate from Cu or Ni. However, transferred graphene has serious drawback due to remaining polymeric residue during transfer process which induces the poor device characteristics by impurity scattering and it interrupts the surface functionalization for the sensor application. In this study, we demonstrate the characteristics of solution-gated FET depending on the removal of polymeric residues. The solution-gated FET is operated by the modulation of the channel conductance by applying a gate potential from a reference electrode via the electrolyte, and it can be used as a chemical sensor. The removal process was achieved by several solvents during the transfer of CVD graphene from a copper foil to a substrate and additional annealing process with H2/Ar environments was carried out. We compare the properties of graphene by Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy(AFM), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. Effects of residual polymeric materials on the device performance of graphene FET will be discussed in detail.
The effects of residual impurities on solid state sintering of the powder injection molded (PIMed) W-15wt%Cu nanocomposite powder were investigated. The W-Cu nanocomposite powder was produced by the mech-ano-chemical process consisting of high energy ball-milling and hydrogen reduction of W blue powder-cuO mixture. Solid state sintering of the powder compacts was conducted at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 2~10 h in hydrogen atmosphere. The den-sification of PIM specimen was slightly larger than that of PM(conventional PM specimen), being due to fast coalescence of aggregate in the PIM. The only difference between PIM and PM specimens was the amount of residual impurities. The carbon as a strong reduction agent effectively reduced residual W oxide in the PIM specimen. The $H_2O$ formed by $H_2$ reduction of oxide disintegrated W-Cu aggregates during removal process, on the contrary to this, micropore volume rapidly decreased due to coalescence of the disintegrated W-Cu aggregates during evolution of CO.It can be concluded that the higher densification was due to the earlier occurred Cu phase spreading that was induced by effective removal of residual oxides by carbon.
The effects of salts such as aluminum sulfate as inorganic salt(2-4%), and sodium salts of citrate, tartrate, succinate, potassium tartrate and gelatin as organic salts(0.1%) on the formation of ${\alpha}$-calcium sulfate hemihydrate from by-product gypsum of phosphoric acid process under hydrothermal condition at 123$^{\circ}C$ and 133$^{\circ}C$ were investigated. Aluminum sulfate solution exhibited the catalystic effected on the crystallization of ${\alpha}$-calcium sulfate hemihydrate of which was assumed in the prismatic form, and organic salts solution exhibited little effect on the catalystic action to the crystallization, than inorganic salts. In the acidic solution with sulfuric acid(pH=2), needle like crystal of calcium sulfate hemihydrate was obtained. Hydrothermal process with aluminum sulfate solution also showed certain amounts of impurity removal such as phosphorus penataoxide from calcium sulfate hemihydrate.
In this study, the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetraflouroborate (EMI-BF4) was synthesized and purified using the liquid/liquid fractional distillation method to apply a supercapacitor. EMI-BF4 was extracted with dichloromethane from the liquid/liquid extraction method in acidic, neutral, and alkali conditions for removal of impurity, and then the electrical capacities of the purified ionic liquids were measured and compared. The electrical capacities of ionic liquids under acidic condition showed higher value than those of neutral or alkali conditions. As the ratio of ionic liquid to solvent became higher, the electrical capacity value was increased.
The water test results indicated that the impurities had detrimetal effect on the wear resistance of silicon nitride and the effects were getting severe as the temperature increased. Especially when Ca existed as an impurity the detrimental effects was the most severe. These results were resulted from the fact that impurities lowered the mechanical properties of the grain boundary phase of silicon nitride. The wear test results of glass/glass-ceramic specimens having a similar composition to the grain boundary phase of silicon nitride revea-led that the specimen containing CaO showed the lowest wear resistance. The existence of Fe and Ca at the grain boundary phase assisted forming a grain boundary phase with relatively low refractoriness. Therefore at a given wear condition the removal of deformed layer would be easier. The results showed that the glass phases could be modified by heat-treatment and this modification improved tribological characteristics of the silicon nitride.
Henequen fibers were treated by electron beam irradiation and by NaOH to make surface modification for better bonding in the manufacture of biocomposite. Impurity removal and carbonyl group formation were noticed in the previous study by electron beam irradiation, but extensive cellulose degradation were also noticed. To evaluate the effects of electron beam irradiation on cellulosic fibers further, henequen fibers, cotton pulp, cotton fibers, and cellophane were irradiated by electron beam, and their changes of cellulose viscosity, chemical composition, and tensile strength were measured and analyzed.
It is well known that iron is one of the most common impurity elements found in aluminum and its alloys. Iron in the aluminum forms an intermetallic compounds such as $FeAl_3$. The $FeAl_3$ particles on the aluminum surface are one of the most detrimental phases to the corrosion process and anodizing procedure for aluminum and its alloys. Trial and error surface treatment will be carried out to find the preferential and effective removal of $FeAl_3$ particles on the surfaces without dissolution of aluminum matrix around the particles. One of the preferable surface treatments for the aim of getting $FeAl_3$ free surface was an electrochemical treatment such as cathodic current density of $-2kAm^{-2}$ in a 20-30 mass% $HNO_3$ solution for the period of 300s. The corrosion characteristics of aluminum surface with $FeAl_3$ free particles are examined in a $0.1kmol/m^3$ NaCl solution. It is found that aluminum with free $FeAl_3$ particles shows higher corrosion resistance than aluminum with $FeAl_3$ particles.
