Improvement of soft clay layers is highly significant for the efficient utilization of the national land. Thus, the development of advanced methods and materials is currently necessary. Quicklime, as a injection material for the soil improvement, is possibly applied as the useful method for the improvement of soft clay layers. Based upon the experimental study, the following conclusions were obtained. When quicklime was employed, a substantial strength increase was observed from the initial stage of injection. In overall, the present experiments showed that the improvement effects of soft clay layers using the quicklime are appeared to be substantially better than those of lime or sand. Therefore, the possibility of quicklime usage is significantly high in domestic country with abundant lime reserves.

Currently, Eco-friendly construction materials are widely utilized for reducing $CO_2$ emission in construction. Furthermore various engineering fibers are also added for improving a brittle behavior in concrete. In the paper, concrete specimens with 10% and 20% replacement ratio with RHA (Rice Husk Ash) are prepared, and engineering behaviors in RHA and OPC concrete are evaluated with different addition of coconut fiber from 0.125~0.375% of volume ratio. Several basic tests including compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, impact resistance, and bond strength are performed, and crack width and deflections are also measured in flexural test. RHA is evaluated to be very effective in strength development and 0.125% of fiber addition leads significant improvement in tensile strength, ductility, and crack resistance. RHA and coconut fiber are effective construction material both for reutilization of limited resources and performance improvement in normal concrete.
Piezocone Penetration Test has been performed in the soft ground over the site preparation area at Inchon International Airport(IIA). With the pore pressure dissipation test results, the changes in the permeability and the coefficient of consolidation in clayey soil were checked and the differences of the undrained shear stength verified the soft ground improvement effect from vane test and piezocone test both before and after the improvement. From the results, thin sand seam was found and this caused a big difference in the coefficient of permeability and consolidation. The coefficient of consolidation was high in the upper marine deposit and relatively low in lower marine deposit. It was found that the reduction of void ratio by preloading resulted in the reduction of coefficient of consolidation after the ground improvement. In addition, there were some variations of undrained shear strength when the number of 15 or 18 was used as the coefficient of piezocone(Nkt). However, when the average value of undrained shear strength calculated using Nkt=10 was applied, the result indicated the similar average value with the result of vane test and the increasing rate of strength( Δsu/Δ$\sigma$≒0.38) also showed the similar distribution.

In this study, field test was performed to investigate the strength-improvement effect of shotcrete mixed Micro-silica fume and shotcrete quality was estimated by EFNARC standard. Deterioration test combined the Freezing-thawing and Carbonation was also performed in order to investigate a long-term durability of high-strength shotcrete. As a result of test, the compressive strength of shotcrete using Micro-silica fume was 45.2~55.8MPa and flexible strength was 5.01~6.66MPa, so a promotion ratio of strength was 37~79%, 17~61% respectively. And the strength-improvement effect of strength by silica fume addition ratio of 7.5~10% for cement mass was more superior to the others. Due to relative dynamic modulus, mass decrease rate and carbonation progress of shotcrete mixed Micro-silica fume, it was especially realized that Micro-silica fume reduced deterioration caused by steel fiber and improved a long-term durability of shotcrete.

This study is a basic experiment to complement the problems in decrease of strength in case we change lots of fly ash("FA" here in after) in ordinary portland cement("OPC" here in after). Mixing plaster that is known to be effective in improvement in hydration of blast furnace slag powder("BS" here in after). After FA changed concrete is mixed, the study physical proporties such as compression strength, increased proportionaly. When second-class BS 5 % and gypsum 2 % changed, compare to OPC strength approximately 120 % was recorded after one day. In FA 20 % case, according to the ratio of gypsum changed results showed similar trend, but compared to FA 10 % changed concrete, expression strength improvement was lower.
Recently, the construction industry has focused on eco-friendly materials instead of traditional materials due to their harmful effects on the environment. To this end, biopolymers are among proper choices to improve the geotechnical behavior of problematic soils. In the current study, serish biopolymer is introduced as a new binder for the purpose of sand improvement. Serish is a natural polysaccharide extracted from the roots of Eremurus plant, which mainly contains inulins. The effect of serish biopolymer on sand treatment has been investigated through performing unconfined compressive strength (UCS), California bearing ratio (CBR), as well as wind erosion tests. The results demonstrated that serish increased the compressive strength of dune sand in both terms of UCS and CBR. Also, wind erosion resistance of the sand was considerably improved as a result of treatment with serish biopolymer. A microstructural study was also conducted via SEM images; it can be seen that serish coated the sand particles and formed a strong network.
This paper studies the swelling and strength characteristics of unimproved and improved expansive soils in terms of the swell potential, swelling pressure, rate of secondary swelling, unconfined compressive strength and California bearing ratio (CBR). The admixtures used in this study are locally available cement and fly ash. The soils used in this study were taken from the Mae Moh power plant, Lampang Province, in northern Thailand. A conventional consolidation test apparatus was used to determine the swelling of the soil specimen. The optimum admixture contents are determined to efficiently reduce the swelling of unimproved soil. The rate of secondary swelling for unimproved soil is within the range of highly plastic montmorillonite clay, whereas the specimens improved with optimum admixture contents can be classified as non-swelling kaolinite. A soil type affects the swelling pressure. Expansive soil improvement with fly ash alone can reduce swelling percentage but cannot enhance the unconfined compressive strength and CBR. The strength and swelling characteristics can be predicted well by the swelling percentage in this study.
This is a study about how the increase of strength is changed when ground improvement material is mixed with either coastal clay or sandy soil. The ground improvement material was made from mixing a certain proportion of the slag which is by-products generated by smelting the iron ore and the paper fly ash which is formed by bumping up the paper. The ground improvement material was added to coastal soil and sandy soil each. And then according to ratio of water contents, number of curing days and ratio of mixture, specimen for uniaxial compression test was made. The change of uniaxial compression strength and the generated substances was analyzed while the specimen is being cured for 28days. The result of analysis shows that the strength of coastal clay was increased about eleven times more than that of sandy soil. This means that ettringite reaction by ground improvement material becomes more distinctive in the coastal clay than in the sandy soil.

Microbiological calcium carbonate precipitation (MCP) has been investigated for its ability to improve the compressive strength of mortar. However, very few studies have been conducted on the use of calcite-forming bacteria (CFB) to improve compressive strength. In this study, we discovered new bacterial genera that are capable of improving the compressive strength of mortar. We isolated 4 CFB from 7 environmental concrete structures. Using sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA genes, the CFB could be partially identified as Sporosarcina soli KNUC401, Bacillus massiliensis KNUC402, Arthrobacter crystallopoietes KNUC403, and Lysinibacillus fusiformis KNUC404. Crystal aggregates were apparent in the bacterial colonies grown on an agar medium. Stereomicroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses illustrated both the crystal growth and the crystalline structure of the $CaCO_3$ crystals. We used the isolates to improve the compressive strength of cement-sand mortar cubes and found that KNUC403 offered the best improvement in compressive strength.

In this study, a circular and indoor soil tank foundation was manufactured to study the improvement according to the degree of turbulence arising from PBD penetration, using the existing plate-type shoe and improved V-type shoe to change the degree of turbulence. Furthermore, to study the foundation improvement effect, the strength, settlement speed in the turbulence area were compared according to the shoe penetration. The results of the study showed that the V-type shoe reduced the strength coefficient decrease effect, and the foundation improvement effect according to the degree of turbulence was identified.
